04.01.2022 Genius 3D MAMMOGRAPHY Exams Now Available at MEDSCAN Double Bay. The Genius exam is clinically proven to: Increase invasive breast cancer detection by 41%; Decrease false positives by 15-40%, reducing the need for further testing and unnecessary anxiety for your patients; and Increase cancer detection in women with dense breasts, i.e. women in their 40s not actively targeted by the screening program.... Genius exams are only available on the Selenia Dimensions 3D system by Hologic. The exam can be used in conjunction with a 2D mammogram for screening purposes, and is used for diagnostic imaging of high-risk patients, such as the following patient types: Changes or lumps in their breasts Strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer Dense breast tissue (common in women under the age of 50 where cancer is more difficult to detect with conventional mammography versus in older women) Previous diagnosis of breast disease or those requiring further assessment following a screening mammogram The Genius 3D MAMMOGRAPHY exam takes a series of images at various angles, allowing breast tissue to be examined in thin layers, typically 1mm thick. This provides greater imager clarity and helps us to see through overlapping structures that may mimic or hide lesions on a conventional mammogram. Very low X-ray energy is used about the same as a film screen mammogram, which is well within the recommended guidelines. A Medicare rebate may be available for symptomatic or high-risk patients.
