24.01.2022 I often talk to my clients about the benefits of practicing Mindfulness for anxiety reduction. When individuals have experiences with depression or anxiety they more often than not spend a lot of time consumed by their thoughts, thus exacerbating their stress. Life is busy, particularly at this time of year...There are always new events to plan or attend, end of year exams or schooling pressures, or issues to worry about, such as health, work, family, relationships or financ...ial. Research tells us that when you live in the moment--that is, getting out of your head and being consciously aware of your surroundings,you will usually feel happier and experience less stress. That dread that reminds us we’ve take on more than we can handle, said ‘yes’ too many times, tried to please instead of protect. 18.01.2022 Today I spoke with my client about the detrimental effects of negative self talk. Or more to the point, the monumental effects of positive self talk! So often our internal dialogue is fraught with criticism... I’m not good enough I’m too fat to fit into this... I won’t get the position I’m bound to fail I couldn’t do that, I’m not smart enough.... The list goes on and on... I could be here all day! Most worryingly though, is not just adults who do this. When did our kids start this pattern of negative self reflection? Increasingly, we spend large amounts of our days reflecting negatively about so many variables, some in our control but many outside of it. We critique our appearance, or our ability to parent effectively, or to be an exceptional lover, a worthy friend or valued employee. When our narrative is negative, it does nothing but suffocate our self-worth and self-concept. Why? What if we decided to change that narrative? What if you made the executive decision to be kind to yourself? Instead of belittling, self shaming or suppressing your self worth, how about celebrating the imperfections, rejoicing in the unknown or ambiguous, and viewing yourself as worthy. Today I challenge you to embrace the POWER OF YET. I can’t do this... YET We are not on the right track.... YET I can’t find the right partner... YET I can’t fit into my favourite dress.... YET I’m not smart enough.... YET You spend way too much time in your head to be mean to yourself. Choose kind

11.01.2022 As parents, we often feel powerless to help our kids navigate the agonising experience of bullying or social exclusion. When a child experiences this adversity, parents often witness their happy-go-lucky kid slip into the abyss of school aversion, attachment issues, disordered eating, sleepless nights, and worryingly, experiences with anxiety and/or depression. I often meet with families who express that when this becomes their reality, the issues faced by their child at scho...ol can deeply permeate into the family home, affecting both the stability and the overall happiness of every member of the family unit. A parent recently said to me "Their hurt becomes ours".....There is hope though! Parents can help their child build resilience, prepare them to confidently face future adversity, and restore balance by tapping into the right tools. As this article attests, parents should work collaboratively with their child in finding solutions together. This can be done by recognising and acknowledging feelings, actively listening, highlighting and drawing upon your child's hive of support (e.g. teacher, neighbour, older brother, friend), and allowing your child the autonomy and freedom to draw upon their own resources. Additionally, by talking to others who have experience in this area (and lets face it, your child is not alone), you may gain insight and perspective into what works and what doesn't. Finally, seeking professional expertise can be instrumental in packing your tool belt full with evidence-based tools and techniques that will help your child recover from social exclusion. See more

11.01.2022 I was privileged enough to witness something beautiful this week... For the past couple of months, I have been working with a couple who came to me feeling "broken". On their first session they reported that they felt disconnected, lonely and deeply unhappy in their relationship. In fact, when I initially asked about their satisfaction as a couple, they scaled themselves as a 1/10 in overall relationship happiness. Things were dire to say the least! However, this couple were... truly amazing in their commitment to positive change- they showed up every fortnight, didn't shy away from the tough questions or topics and faced their challenges head on with grace and humility. I have been continuously awe-inspired at their determination to keep their family together. They stood at the precipice and took a leap back into their relationship with strength, courage and resilience. There have been tears, silence, heated discussions, admissions and most evidently, a beautiful evolution in trust and communication. Last week they arrived with a bottle of champs and some plastic picnic glasses and asked if it was OK if they raised a toast. To love, trust, commitment, forgiveness, and connectedness. They nailed it!! Oh Happy Day!
