24.01.2022 Melanoma matters

24.01.2022 The current COVID pandemic is impacting The World and although here in Tasmania you may think we're not impacted but sadly we are. My heart goes out to those currently living in the hot zones and the ones who are suffering in lockdown. It's hard not being with your family and friends. Even tougher is making the choice or having your choice taken away for mainland specialists appointments. The pandemic has created fear, anger, anxiety and depression, especially for those livi...ng in hot zones and those needing to travel for medical expertise. Imagine for a moment you've just been diagnosed with melanoma cancer or any cancer for that matter. This is a time when you need to be supported more than ever by friends and family. Your best chance of survival may be attending a specialist team on the mainland, though you worry whether travelling and mandatory quarantining in a hotel upon your return is the best way forward. The uncertainty around our lives at present can cause aloneness, anxiety, depression which can lead to complicated grief, even thoughts of suicide as you may feel it's just too hard. If you are being impacted, talk to your GP for a referral to a counsellor or call one of the many support hotlines. Reach out, someone is ready to listen. Call Lifeline 131114 or Beyond Blue 1800 505 328 you do not have to walk through this alone. https://coronavirus.beyondblue.org.au

23.01.2022 There is no medicine like hope, No incentive so great and no tonic more powerful, as the expectation of something better tomorrow. Don't let anyone hold your pen, write your own story of survival, after all you are unique.

22.01.2022 Spring is here, blossom and buds abound. It is also the time we need to protect our skin. We have been in hibernation especially with COVID restrictions. So be careful of the UV rays that it doesn't damage your delicate winter skin. Currently UV protection required between 11am and 1.30pm. Sunblock needs to be applied 20 minutes prior to expected UV times and every 2hrs.

21.01.2022 Research has found true altruistic behaviour can improve both physical and mental health. I truly believe it is not about what we receive, rather what we give, that heals us. You may never know how you changed a person's life. Though what I do know is a genuine smile, an acknowledgement, a kind gesture can change a person's perception, change their world.

18.01.2022 Sometimes hope is all you have, please don't let others stifle your positivity.

17.01.2022 In our busy lives we often forget to take the time to smell the roses.Take life for granted. Cancer often gives you a new perspective, the ability to know your strength and to appreciate the gift of life.

15.01.2022 Letting go of the life you had planned is certainly challenging, however it does highlight what's important. Sometimes our life is so caught up in the future, we forget to live in the day. Cancer taught me to appreciate life and accept the unexpected.

14.01.2022 There is literature going back to early 60's that identifies stress leading to immune suppression, predisposing an individual to various diseases, all cancers including melanoma. I have always been a big believer that stress triggers illnesses. It unbalances the digestive system, increases cortisol levels and weakens the immune system. When a person is stressed they can under eat or over eat which again impacts our biological markers, gut bacteria and can switch on or off ep...igenetics, leaving the body unprotected. Some stress is healthy, it keeps us on our toes and can ensure deadlines are met and raises safety awareness. Though there are other stressors especially those that impact our mental health that can be devastating, particularly if it's ongoing Both my melanoma's came approx 8 months after very stressful events. After talking to others with various cancers there certainly seems to be a pattern of cancer showing up after a significant stressor. Anyone else seen parallels with devastating stress and cancer? Below is an article on research that details links between stress and melanoma cancer. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23740369/

13.01.2022 Nothing more important than for you to fill your bucket with selfcare and surround yourself with those that nourish your soul.

12.01.2022 Sometimes our life expectations changes in the blink of an eye. No doubt it will be hard, you need time to regroup. You'll digest your challenge and come though the other side; stronger, wiser and establish new dreams. Life changes, set up challenges, though the best way forward is to find gratitude for those moments in your life, that will remain timeless in building your best memories..... Some of my best memories come from black humour used in moments of despair. Whatever it takes, keep moving forward, looking back at losses of dreams and hopes will not bring happiness.

09.01.2022 For all those that are feeling overwhelmed or insignificant today, just know you are capable, you are brave, you are significant. Sometimes you just need to hear it from someone else.

07.01.2022 Forever grateful for the additional time given...109 months. A study group consisted of 13 patients with melanoma metastatic to the gallbladder. The median survival was 12 months following the diagnosis, and only 1 patient survived more than 42 months. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17368297/
