09.01.2022 There was sun safety all round at Redlands School when student Charlie organised a crazy hat day in support of Melanoma Institute Australia. Thanks to our friends @sunsense for providing the 50+ and thanks to Charlie and his peers for their creativity and generosity. The day raised some $2,500 to support MIA’s melanoma research, but just as importantly, it provided the young students with valuable hands on lessons about sun safety and melanoma prevention. #FundraiserFriday

06.01.2022 A major breakthrough in the treatment of #melanoma was welcome news today. A new study, based on six clinical trials, revealed that drug treatment before surgery (#neoadjuvant therapy) is effective in preventing spread of the disease in Stage III melanoma patients. One of these patients was Ryan Channells, a volunteer firefighter who shares his story. MIA's Prof Georgina Long AO also explains how the treatment works. We are one step closer to achieving our goal of zero deaths from melanoma.
05.01.2022 We're very proud to announce MIA's Dr James Wilmott has been awarded the 'Wildfire Highly Cited Publication Award' in Cancer Institute NSW 2020 Premier's Awards for Outstanding Cancer Research. Dr Wilmott led a collaboration across Melanoma Institute Australia, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and University of Sydney to produce the ‘Whole genome landscapes of major melanoma subtypes’ paper. First published in Nature in 2017, the research has been cited over 360 tim...es globally & led to over 509 new research papers. Dr Wilmott's research highlighted that melanoma is not one large cancer type, but rather there are subtypes with different molecular traits relating to where the melanoma began. Thank you to all the patients who made this research possible. #cancerNSWawards

02.01.2022 MELANOMA TREATMENT BREAKTHROUGH In what is being hailed as one of the biggest breakthroughs in #melanoma treatment since the advent of immunotherapy, a new study has revealed that drug treatment before surgery, known as #neoadjuvant therapy, is effective in preventing deadly spread of the disease. The study, published today in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine, pooled data from six clinical trials. Researchers found that giving Stage III patients a short course of pre-...operative targeted or immunotherapy was effective. Neoadjuvant therapy trains the immune system to work more effectively against melanoma, and also enables a clinician to assess early on if a patient is responding to a particular treatment and decide on an alternative plan if needed. It can also make surgery less complex. ‘The neoadjuvant approach is a new way of dealing with melanoma and is a game changer for Stage III patients with bulky disease which has spread to their lymph nodes,’ said Professor Georgina Long AO, Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) Co-Medical Director and study senior author. Associate Professor Alex Menzies, MIA Oncologist and study first author, said; ‘This study shows that giving drug therapy before surgery reduces risk of recurrence even further, preventing spread to vital organs like the brain and liver and saving more lives.’ ‘It is exciting that patients with earlier stage disease are now also benefiting from research breakthroughs. If we can prevent these patients from progressing to Stage IV or metastatic disease, then we will be even closer to achieving our goal of zero deaths from melanoma.’ said Professor Richard Scolyer, MIA Co-Medical Director.
02.01.2022 We are extremely proud to announce that Professor Richard Scolyer, MIA’s Co-Medical Director, has been named Outstanding Cancer Researcher of the Year in the Cancer Institute NSW Premier’s Awards 2020, NSW’s highest accolade for cancer research. Professor Scolyer was recognised for his pioneering melanoma research which has made a worldwide difference to the assessment, management and survival of people with melanoma. Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of the Cancer Institute NS...W, Professor David Currow, said the body of work amassed by Professor Scolyer throughout his career has made a real difference to how clinicians and researchers think about melanoma. Ten years ago, people diagnosed with advanced melanoma had their life expectancy measured in months. Now, Australian people with melanoma have a range of increasingly personalised treatment options. There are people alive today, in NSW and around the world, thanks to work done by Professor Scolyer and his amazing teams, he said. Professor Scolyer said We have an amazing team of people doing world leading melanoma research and it’s a huge honour to be leading that team and to be recognised in this way. Pathologists have a unique role to play in translational research and are key members of multidisciplinary teams which are conducting research at a high level. Pathologists are the bridge between the patient and what goes on in the research laboratory, bringing a unique perspective in order to facilitate research.
