24.01.2022 How should students participate in remote learning? Students should monitor digital platforms and communication often to check for announcements and feedback fr...om teachers, completing tasks with integrity and academic honesty and doing their best work, do their best to meet timelines, commitments and due dates, communicate proactively with their teachers and asking for support as needed, collaborating and supporting their classmates in their learning online and abiding by their schools behaviour guidelines. https://bit.ly/2zx0gC7 See more

22.01.2022 As many of you would be aware, during the school holidays a distressing incident occurred at the Weston Skate Park where two young people were stabbed, and an 18-year-old later died. ACT Policing have asked us to share a video with you about the incident that also includes advice about cyber safety for our young people. https://youtu.be/4w9Noq1J5Gk

22.01.2022 Schools, teachers, school staff, and community service providers have worked so hard to get ready for remote learning for term 2 to start from Tuesday 28 April.... Thank you to parents and families for your efforts during this time and for looking after your childrens wellbeing. Now that were ready for term 2, the ACT Education Directorate along with schools will begin to look at how and when we can transition back to face-to-face learning. At this stage, we dont know when this transition will happen. We want to make sure that when this does happen, were ready for it and that it can be as smooth as possible for students and families. We will make sure that parents and families have plenty of notice before schools transition to face-to-face education, and that the community know how it will happen. Thank you to the Canberra community for your patience during this pandemic. Term 2 arrangements Term 2 commences in the ACT on Tuesday 28 April. From the start of Term 2, all ACT public schools will deliver remote learning. This means all public school students will access a remote learning program which is designed and delivered by their usual classroom teacher(s). We are asking families to support their children to do this learning from home. Where this is not possible, the ACT Education Directorate has made 9 schools available as Safe and Supervised Sites. At a Safe and Supervised site, students from surrounding areas will be supported to access their remote learning program by a team of teachers, staff and a community services organisation. Every school Principal and classroom teacher is still working hard to support their students and will provide everything that students need to continue receiving a high-quality education during this period of remote learning. Families who have any questions about their childs education in term 2 should contact their childs usual school in the first instance.

19.01.2022 VALE Mary Arnold Dear MCSS Community, I am sorry to have to pass on the very sad news that Mary Arnold Associate Principal till 2018 and later teaching colleague passed away on Friday night after having a medical episode. Our thoughts and condolences are with Andrew, Liz and the rest of her family as they come to terms with their loss. ... As you are aware, Marys teaching career in the ACT spans over 30 years, including 15 years as Associate principal at MCSS. She continued in a casual role at MCSS until the end of last semester. She then decided to leave teaching to spend more time supporting her family and grandkids. Her integrity, compassion and commitment as an educator are attributes we all will remember her for one of those teachers and leaders that influenced the lives of students and staff in positive ways always. Her legacy lives on in the staff that she has mentored and supported and we all will miss her. As we draw together as a community to offer support at this difficult time, our thoughts and condolences are with Marys family, friends, colleagues and students during this difficult time. Kind regards, Jesse

09.01.2022 ANZAC commemorative assembly. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic and social distancing requirements we had to cancel this years annual ANZAC day commemorative assembly. However, as part of our commemorations we have had a Aleppo pine seedling planted in the garden bed of the carpark to honour the ANZACs and their sacrifice. The pine is representative of the Gallipoli campaign where the 1st Australian Infantry Division launched a major offensive at Gallipoli on the 6th August 191...5. The ridges, once covered with the Aleppo pine, had been cleared to provide cover for the Turkish trenches, leaving just one, solitary pine. The area became known as Lone Pine Ridge. After three days of fighting the Anzacs succeeded in capturing the enemy trenches, but this action cost 2000 Australian soldiers lives and 7,000 Turkish lives. Lance Corporal Benjamin Charles Smith collected some pine cones from the branches used to cover the Turkish trenches. He sent the cones home to his mother, in remembrance of his brother Mark, who had died in the fighting. From one of these cones Mrs McMullin sowed several seeds, and successfully raised two seedlings. One was planted in Inverell, and the other was presented to the Australian War Memorial to be planted in the grounds in honour of all the sons who fell at Lone Pine. Lest We Forget.

08.01.2022 Year 11 and 12 can already be a really challenging time for students working towards their ACT Senior Secondary Certificate and COVID-19 has certainly added to ...the stress. ACT public colleges are well placed to continue to deliver courses online, as well as supporting the wellbeing of students. Every public college student has access to a Chromebook provided by the ACT Government and colleges are working hard to make sure learning and assessment can continue. The government is also working to make sure every student has internet access at homemore will come on this soon. Every ACT public school has access to a school psychologist and will continue to provide a high level of support for college students. I know many of you are concerned about how this will affect ATAR scores and university admissions. The ACTs Senior Secondary Certificate, unlike other states and territories, uses results from school based assessment in both year 11 and year 12. Our system gives a lot of flexibility for assessment schedules and types to be adjusted by schools and still meet the requirements of the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies. ACT senior secondary students can be confident that if they meet the requirements, they will receive the ACT Senior Secondary Certificate. The question of how the ATAR and university admissions will work this year is a national issue. Education Ministers have agreed that it is important to resolve this question urgently, and that no senior secondary student should be disadvantaged. We want to see students succeed and to support them through whatever challenges they face. Well keep you updated as we work through this.
