20.01.2022 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, H7N7 strain, was diagnosed on a free-range poultry farm near Geelong on 30/7/20 and on a second, nearby farm on 7/8/20. This strain of Avian Influenza can cause high mortality in poultry (see below) but is generally not dangerous to people. For further information see https://agriculture.vic.gov.au//p/avian-influenza-bird-flu So far, this outbreak is confined to the west of Melbourne, but this could change. Where practical, we recommend yo...u keep poultry indoors. IF YOU HAVE UNEXPLAINED DEATHS, OR YOUR BIRDS ARE UNWELL PLEASE CALL THE CLINIC. DO NOT BRING SICK POULTRY TO THE CLINIC WITHOUT FIRST TELEPHONING. Our staff will advise you as to what action needs to be taken. The following birds are most susceptible to being affected by AI: domestic fowl, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, ostriches, pheasants, quail, turkeys. Many species of wild birds, including waterfowl and seabirds, can carry the virus but usually show no signs of disease. Infection of humans occurs rarely, usually through contact with infected poultry. People are not infected by eating chicken meat or eggs, or by contact with other infected people. See more
20.01.2022 For something different, Dr. Matt has a son with significant disabilities. Nathan is now 14 years old and an opportunity has arisen for him to get a trained companion dog. This could be a huge support for Nathan as it is expected the dog will bring about some significant changes and improvements in Nathan’s quality of life. However, these dogs are not cheap and Matt has to raise $10,000 support for the dog. If you are interested in helping please follow the link below and click on the donation page. In the section reason for donation write ‘Gosbell’ to ensure the donation goes to this cause. All donations over $2 are tax deductible. Thanks for your support. https://dogsforkids.org.au/donate/

15.01.2022 It must be breeding season! Our vets had an interesting week removing 'things' from our avian patients, Dr Maddie took out a an oviduct (uterus) filled with a lot of solid yolk material from 'Aurora', Dr Matt removed a feeding tube from a baby parrotlet (take care if you are hand feeding) and Dr Pat removed a blocked oviduct from a little Bantam that had eggs in all stages of development and spilling into the abdominal cavity. All recovered and doing well.

10.01.2022 Have you found little pieces of old rusty rubbish in your yard? We’ve had an influx of chickens in the clinic lately who have eaten nuts, bolts and other rusty bits of rubbish they’ve dug up in their yards. This has caused heavy metal poisoning which can lead to severe illness and death if left untreated. Heavy metal poisoning can mimic other illnesses. Some of the symptoms can be tiredness, not wanting to eat, blood in faeces, sudden collapse and neurological issues (wobblin...ess, unable to walk properly, strange head movements.) This can also be seen in other pet birds who ingest lead paint in old homes, chew on cheap metal toy parts or poorly made cages. We can run a quick blood lead test in our clinic and can also put you in touch with a soil tester if there is any question about where the metal is. This photo shows an xray of metal eaten by a chicken. This was surgically removed and she is thriving now. See more

06.01.2022 It's that time of year again!
04.01.2022 Fleur, a female Eclectus parrot, had a distended abdomen in which we could feel at least one egg but she was not passing it in reponse to medical treatment. X-rays showed there were at least 2 fully formed eggs so Dr Amber Lee carried out abdominal surgery to remove these and then did an implant with Suprelorein to prevent Fleur from laying further eggs. The reason the eggs could not pass was because they had reversed up the oviduct and were lying free in the abdominal (technically the coelom) rather than moving normally along the oviduct they way they should. This is uncommon but happens from time to time, surgery is the only way to fix it. Fleur recovered well and is happily back with her human family

01.01.2022 Gracie, a pet chicken, had an impacted oviduct (uterus) that had been making her unwell. A hormone blocking implant and medical treatment had not resolved the problem and she needed surgery. This video shows Dr Madeleine Rowe removing her oviduct.
