25.01.2022 2020 Unico Zelo 'Harvest' Pinot Noir - Adelaide Hills, SA $18.90 The story behind the Harvest range is great. The good people at Unico Zelo has created a co-op of sorts where they make wines, under this brand and the... profit from sales go back to the growers. The growers get three - four times more doing it this way than by just selling their fruit off. In this case it is in the Porter family that benefits from the sale of this wine. The Pinot Noir always sells out quickly. Due to the low yields of 2020 there is less than normal. The Victorian agent only received 64 cases to sell. 24.01.2022 During the lockdown we've been very busy focusing on our house wines. There's an old saying that you can judge a venue on the quality of their house wines. Well here's a new arrival which we are very excited about. 2019 VCD PERRICOOTA SANGIOVESE @ 9 a bottle / $50 a 6 pack It has all the hallmarks of a good Sangiovese. Cherry, sandalwood and tobacco aromas followed by a palate showing smoked paprika and almond / nutty finish.... We first came across this sparking whilst dining at Cumulus Inc. It was the 2015 vintage, and we were very impressed indeed. Weeks later we purchased some for the store. It was extremely popular, and we have now moved on to the new 2016 vintage release. Production is tiny and the winery does not have an agent, so all deliveries com...e direct from the winery. 18.01.2022 This wine was made and blended for the 'Iki-Jime' restaurant, which was part of the Vue de Monde Group. Due to COVID19 it has closed its doors for good so we've picked some up through the wholesalers. A blend of Friulano, Moscato, Giallo, Malvasia & Riesling that has been left on skins for 6 months and matured for 6 months in barrel and amphora.... The wine is softly oxidised, with lolly banana and tinned pineapple aromas. The palate is a red wine drinkers white as its textural and rich, with a grapefruit tang on the finish. 17.01.2022 2017 Thompson Estate Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon $31.50 each (Don’t pay $50) Peter and Jane Thompson planted vines on their property in 1994 (their neighbour is Vasse Felix). Prior to stating their own wine brand, they were shareholders in the Pierro and Fire Gully vineyards. They employed Bob Cartwright (formerly Leeuwin Estate winemaker) to make their wines. It’s a generous wine with blackcurrant and cinnamon aromas and medium weighted palate. James Halliday review ...& rating An altogether serious wine that includes 5% each of malbec and cabernet franc plus 2% merlot. Despite suggestions of tenderly doing this or that in the vinification, this is Wilyabrup's answer to Bordeaux. While there are some delicious red/cassis/purple flavours, the stern mouthfeel makes you stand up and salute. It is still in its first flush of youth. Released with bottle age and extremely reasonably priced. Founded by Leon Massoni (founder of Florentino and Tolarno restaurants) on the Mornington Peninsula, in 1984. The Glenkara vineyard, in the Pyrenees was purchased in 1997. The fruit for this wine comes off that vineyard. ... Here is the Halliday review: From the Glenkara Vineyard, matured for 18 months in French oak. In exceptional condition, the cassis / blackcurrant fruit in a framework of quality French oak and ripe tannins. Almost too good to be true. 06.01.2022 2015 Vina Falernia Carmenere - Elqui Valley, CHILE $20.70 This is an interesting wine and one which we have been recommending over the... past month with huge success. 60% of the grapes have been dried for more complexity and concentration. (appassimento). The wine is soft and velvety. Flavours of fruitcake and sweet raisins and perfectly matched to red meat dishes. The Olivier family are behind the Falernia brand. They came to Chile, from Italy in 1951 looking for a better life. In the beginning they grew vegetables on their property and in 1995 planted wine grapes. 05.01.2022 2017 Linke Barossa Valley Shiraz - Barossa Valley, SA $18 Big is not always beautiful but in this it is.... Linke is a 5th generation German farming family who settled in the Barossa Valley. They're 3rd generation grape growers and since 2002 have been produced their own label, Linke. For 30 years they've been providing their fruit to the famous St Hallett's winery and also to Langmeil since they started in the mid 90s. So there's some quality fruit on show that's for sure. This is the second vintage we've stocked, and boy do they know how to make big reds. The back label states that the grapes are picked at optimum ripeness off their Stonewell vineyard. Optimum indeed. 04.01.2022 2010 Karribindi Shiraz - Margaret River, WA HALF PRICE $10 a bottle... Karribindi's Victorian agent showed us this wine last week. It had been in his warehouse, set aside for restaurants. As there is no real direction as to when they can open, he came to us with the last eight dozen. The wine needs to be drunk within the next 2 years, hence the price. Dan Murphy has the 2011 listed at $120 a 6 pack. The colour has still a vibrant red colour and the aromas are tending to charcoal, chocolate and tapenade. The back label states that the grapes are picked at optimum ripeness, off their Stonewell vineyard. Optimum indeed. The wine is inky black and weighing in at 15.9% alcohol. It is more fruit driven than a ball buster. Linke is a 5th generation German farming family who settled in the Barossa Valley. They’re 3rd generation grape ...growers and since 2002 have produced their own wine under the Linke label. For 30 years they’ve been providing their fruit to the famous St Hallett’s winery and also to Langmeil since they started in the mid-90s. So, there’s some quality fruit on show that’s for sure.
