20.01.2022 After surgery, it's just as important to talk about HOW you eat as it is WHAT you eat. For surgical procedures like the gastric sleeve, the chemical and mechanical digestive processes change. Taking time to practice your eating behaviors will help you feel better during and after meals. 1. Take small bites. Practice cutting up food into small pieces or use smaller utensils. ... 2. Chew thoroughly. Practice chewing 20-30x per bite or until the food is smooth to prevent discomfort. 3. Eat slowly. Aim for meals to take 20-30 minutes to finish to help you feel more comfortable and to allow your stomach and brain to connect. 4. Listen for signs of fullness. For some the feeling of fullness is just a physical sensation; for others, it's a burp, hiccup, sneeze, runny nose, or a big sigh. See more

15.01.2022 AVOID LIQUID CALORIES! Some people think that given it is ok to have liquid calories in the post op period then it is ok to keep doing this down the track. Not true!! ... We have had a number of patients still having liquid breakfasts months after the surgery, who lose weight rapidly once they stop taking these high calorie drinks. Try and avoid liquid meal replacements and calorie dense drinks like Up and Go’s, fruit juices, slurpees, smoothies and protein shakes. There is no way the tiny sleeve stomach could accommodate the number of calories these drinks deliver if it were eaten as a solid meal instead.

15.01.2022 Weight loss surgery is definitely not the ‘easy way out’ as some uneducated people my describe it to be. A lot of time and effort goes into appointments, learning about nutrition and food, committing to a regular exercise regime, changing ones mindset and working on behaviour change, including the relationship we have with food. This doesn’t happen overnight and it’s something our patients have to work at everyday of their lives!

13.01.2022 Needing some ISO inspo? Our PPN dietitian Kristen Adams is attempting to ride the height of Mt Everest! 2020 was the year I wanted to achieve something epic I set my sights on completing a full Ironman , signed up with an amazing coach and trained by butt off for 12 months. Then unfortunately COVID happened ... Whilst others have had an incredibly difficult time, I’m very grateful for my health and fitness, my friends and family are safe and I still have my job. Port Macquarie Ironman in May was postponed to next year and I fixed my sights to Busselton Ironman in Perth in December, however, with the current situation in Victoria, I’m doubtful this event will still go ahead. With motivation dwindling, my coach suggested a mid-way challenge, virtual EVERESTING. It’s pretty straightforward: Pick a hill on Zwift (an indoor riding app) and go up and down it until you attain 29,029 feet of climbing in a single effort no sleeping. After a bit of research, I’m predicting it will take me around 17 hours (if all goes to plan). So on Saturday 5th September I will be waking up in the early hours of the morning to sit on a indoor bike for ~17hrs to climb the distance of MOUNT EVEREST. I’ve never shied away from a challenge, however, this one terrifies me (and my poor bottom)! One thing I’ve learnt over the last 12 months is anything is achievable if you’re prepare to wake up everyday and slowly chip away at your goal! Wish me luck

10.01.2022 Fun fact: Your body has more bacterial cells than human cells But don't let that scare you - most of these microbes are friendly folk, helping us break down fo...od, boosting our immune system and preventing the development of chronic diseases Although our microbiome works to help us, when there's not enough of the good guys in our gut, things can get out balance. This is known as "gut dysbiosis" and can manifest as bloating, nausea, fatigue and GI issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). So how do we keep the good guys happy? - Eat plants Fibre is a prebiotic and is only found in plant foods. Prebiotics feed the good guys in your microbiome. Legumes, whole grains and leafy greens are all high in fibre. -Eat fermented foods Foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir and yogurt are loaded with healthy bacteria which have been used in the fermentation process. -Steer clear of artificial sweeteners Aspartame has been linked to the growth of unhealthy bacteria in the microbiome. -Take antibiotics only when necessary Antibiotics work by killing pathogenic bacteria, as well as good bacteria. Although they can be lifesaving, they can have negative impacts on your microbiome. Want to learn more about your microbiome? At Great Ideas in Nutrition we can conduct microbiome testing, giving you a better idea of your unique microbiome! Ask us about it today

05.01.2022 Day-to-day living now looks very different for every Australian, so it comes as no surprise that our eating patterns are a little out of whack too. It is important to acknowledge that it’s okay for environmental stressors to affect our eating habits. Similarly, it should be emphasised that foods do not carry moral value. While some foods may have more nutritional value, food is neither ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Whatever foods you are eating to survive these times, congratulate yourself on doing your best, and try not to assign guilt or shame to your diet, it serves no purpose.

01.01.2022 Let’s talk about sugar... our dietitian often gets asked if raw unrefined’ sugar is healthier than white sugar, so here are the facts.. 1. The nutritional value of brown vs raw vs white sugar is exactly the same 100% sugar! 2. It is a common misconception that brown or raw sugars are healthy options. Brown rice is definitely better than white rice, but the same is not true for sugar. Brown sugar is white sugar with a bit of molasses added for flavour and colour. Raw sugar... is white sugar that has gone through slightly less processing again for flavour and colour. 3. The price however is not the same with 'unrefined sugar' being more expensive than white
