25.01.2022 YES! Farmers markets are an essential food service under stage 4 restrictions, and Melbourne Farmers Markets (MFM) are operating where we can. Its been a wild ride! On Friday 21st August, the decision to exclude farmers markets from permitted food retailers at the eleventh hour was, rightfully, overturned! Thanks to a huge effort and lobbying by MFM and other VFMA accredited farmers markets reps who made this happen. Remember, we are an essential food service (not a place t...o gather or socialise)and the one shopper per household rule applies. All DHHS recommended actions while shopping should be followed including respecting customer limits, wearing a mask (unless you have a lawful reason for not doing so), and not attending if youre awaiting COVID test results. Make sure youre across our safety precautions below and rest assured were experienced in the management of these, having continually traded throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. We have limits on the number of customers allowed on site at any one time, have implemented strict precautions, increased staff, and altered market layouts and flow. We are confident that the open-air environment of our farmers markets, together with the below precautions and operational adjustments, means our markets provide some of the safest shopping options to you. - If youre feeling sick, stay at home. - Practice good hand hygiene. Hand sanitiser is available at the front gate - Come to shop, not brunch. Hot food is available for take-away only and must be consumed off-site. - Limit your time at market. Make a list of things you need so you can shop quickly and minimise your time out of the house. - Leave the team at home: Only one person per household can leave home to get necessary goods and services. If you are unable to leave a child or at-risk person at home unattended, then they may accompany you - Bring your card: Markets are cash free. Even the gate donations are by tap and go! - Go to the toilet before leaving home: Toilets will only be made available to the public in emergency situations (yes, a desperate child does count as an emergency - but we ask, where possible, to leave the kids at home). - Do not touch the produce. - Adhere to social distancing. We also have a contactless pick-up available from Alphington every Sunday. For more information, join our Melbourne Farmers Marketplace group. 25.01.2022 Humankind Online Film Festival is on this week with an exceptional line up of films and artist performances that each tell a unique story of strength, creativity and resilience. And because no movie night is complete without something delicious to accompany it, they've set up 'Menu for Impact' an opportunity for social enterprises affected by COVID to provide movie goers with foodie treats. And we're included! Visit our markets this weekend for your movie treats, and check ou...t our seasonal recipe and menu suggestions here: https://mfm.com.au/our-markets/recipes/ We highly recommend 2040: The Regeneration, showing this Weds night. Award-winning director Damon Gameau embarks on a journey to explore what the future could look like by the year 2040 if we simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet and shifted them rapidly into the mainstream. 24.01.2022 Our friends at Gasworks Arts Park are hosting a bunch of events as part of Melbourne Fringe including Jude Perl’s "I Have A Face". On from Thurs 26- Sat 28 next week, be sure to grab your tickets now at: https://www.gasworks.org.au/whats-on/i-have-face Ever wondered if you’re doing it right? Well, did you read the label? Life didn’t come with a label, but you will be told your whole life how you should behave or who you should be. You will be told that if you have a problem,... there’s a quick fix you can buy but somehow the problem doesn’t ever seem to really go away. Through comedy, stories and song, Jude Perl shares insight into her own personal and relatable mental health struggles, reminding us when to be aware of labels and when they are totally useless. Sometimes labels are super useful, particularly when you’re washing your fave jumper. But at other times, labels can halt your growth and suppress your very existence. Jude reminds us when to be aware of these labels, and when the labels are totally useless and most importantly, that we are not alone. She’ll talk about some tough stuff, make you want to laugh, cry, sing along - and make you feel truly human. Don't forget #GasworksFM is on this Saturday too!

23.01.2022 ***UPDATE: MARKETS ARE NOW ON! THE DECISION HAS BEEN OVERTURNED. SEE RECENT POST*** Important market update - all farmers markets cancelled this weekend. Devastating and inexplicable news for accredited farmers markets today. ... Stage 4 Lockdown rules were edited OVERNIGHT by the DHHS and it boils down to three words excluding farmers markets from the permitted food retailers category of outdoor food market. No-one had the courtesy to warn us, or even advise and we found out by chance. We are confused and frustrated by this update, and have worked desperately all day to overturn it but we are defeated this weekend. It is with huge regret that we have to cancel Coburg Farmers Market tomorrow and Alphington Farmers Market on Sunday, as we cant go ahead and risk the repercussions of government. We are so sorry to make this decision but we have no choice. Thanks, The MFM team.

You can pick up chicken tomorrow at #CoburgFM from Aussie Farmers Market Free Range Poultry Group. https://www.epicurious.com//vie/slow-cooker-chicken-congee

16.01.2022 Thanks Australian Red Cross - Victoria for the shout out, were feeling the love! 15.01.2022 Have you cooked with garlic shoots yet? A perfect combo between onion and garlic, this punchy veg is super versatile. We've been using shoots in pesto, as a base for chilli mussels, and in garlic bread. They're beautiful sautéed off with fresh mushies, and if you're not sick of omelettes after all the recipe ideas in last week's newsletter, you can add them to your egg dishes as well. Lots of stallholders have new season garlic. Stop by Kingfisher Citrus or Day's Walk Farm at #CoburgFM tomorrow or Kingfisher at #AlphingtonFM this Sunday to grab a bulb or two.

14.01.2022 Weve done all we can to keep Abbotsford Farmers Market trading as normal while the Abbotsford Convent has been closed but, for this week only, we have to admit defeat. Sadly, #AbbotsfordFM is cancelled this Saturday. Since March, weve been relocating #AbbotsfordFM to our Alphington HQ, but unfortunately were no longer able to open the site to the public on Saturdays. We were confident that an alternative site for the market was in place, but unfortunately this option fel...l through this morning. Please check in next month - we will be back! If you live within 5km of #CoburgFM and #AlphingtonFM, youre in luck - both our weekly markets are running this weekend. And youve still got time to place an order on our online Marketplace for an Alphington pick up this Sunday too: https://bit.ly/3keNR8E #shoplocal #jointhelocalfoodrevolution

14.01.2022 Carlton Farmers Market is back this Saturday! - https://mailchi.mp/mfm/carlton-fm-is-back

14.01.2022 We need your help! How about an accredited farmers market at your school, local carpark or utilising that vacant block in the neighbourhood? Weve stayed afloat and trading safely through COVID19, because supporting Victorian producers to connect with their customers is what we do. We are determined to continue but right now weve hit a wall, and we need your help. Four of our seven sites are closed to the public. We have dozens of producers busting for markets and thousands... of customers who want to shop local not multi-national, so we are on the hunt for temporary and permanent opportunities. Our needs are few but specific, and you just never know if you dont ask: A fenced 1000sq + metres open space (think at least two basketball courts) Drive on surface for vehicles Weekend access (6.30am-2.30pm) Toilet facilities nearby Ideals: Power and water available Nearby parking Public transport Stage 4 lockdown might not feel like a time for opportunities, but it absolutely is. In fact its now or never if we believe that the direct connection of Victorian small-scale agriculture to urban communities is important.

Mikes Mussels, Stir Crazy, Farmer Girl and Alice Ross.

While the dwindling of family-run orchards is sad, its heartening to hear how selling direct at farmers markets has helped off-set rising production costs and shrinking margins for these families. After a crazy day lobbying, Miranda and other VFMA accredited farmers market reps have just come off a phone meeting with decision-makers and the Government have overturned the ruling to exclude farmers markets from trading!... At this late notice not all stallholders will be able to attend but we will open the gates for anyone who can and we beg you to rally last minute and show your support for Victorian farmers and producers, and the kick-arse MFM team. Please help us make accredited farmers markets count!
