24.01.2022 Want to know the musical concept a lot of people don't understand how to integrate into their soloing? Arpeggios! I think one of the reasons why is because a lot of guitar players don't realise the many different ways arpeggios can be used. ... When lead guitarists inevitably stumble across Ritchie Blackmore and Yngwie Malmsteen and become inspired to learn more about arpeggios - they generally learn them straight up and down. There's nothing wrong with that, in fact - I don't know how you would learn them any other way. The only thing is when the guitarist tries to use them in a solo - the only way they know how to play them is straight up and down. The are ways of playing arpeggios that make them sound less like traditional arpeggios and more like licks, there are ways of linking arpeggios together so they sound less predictable. There are so many ways of using arpeggios that they should never be dismissed as an option for any solo. Do you like the arpeggio lick in this solo? If so, let me know in the comments! 23.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what people mean when they say things like "flat 3, flat 5 and flat 7?" When people use these terms, they're referring to a note by it's scale degree number. The scale degree formula for a major scale from the root note to the next octave of the root note, regardless of the key, is - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 1. ... Some people count the octave of the root note as an 8, but I've come from the school that refers to it as a 1. The scale degree formula for a natural minor scale from the root note to the next octave of the root note, regardless of the key, is - 1, 2, flat 3, 4, 5, flat 6, flat 7, 1. The reason why we refer to the 3rd, 6th and 7th scale degrees of this scale as flat, is because they've been flattened (moved down the neck a semi tone) in relation to the 3rd, 6th and 7th scale degrees we play in the major scale. All theory is taught in relation to the major scale. If you're reciting the scale degrees of a different scale, flat and sharp scale degrees let people know HOW it's different from the major scale. Or, better still - HOW the major scale has been ALTERED in order to MAKE the new scale. Something that can make this easier to grasp is to think of every other scale besides the major scale as a MUTATION of the major scale. Do you understand scale degrees? Let me know in the comments! 18.01.2022 If you've ever wondered how to play in drop D - KEEP READING! If you're new to playing in drop D, let me first explain what drop D tuning is. Drop D tuning is when you tune the low E a whole tone lower to a D. In other words, you're "dropping" the tuning of the low E down to a low D. ... That's where the "drop" term comes from. Even though this technically makes the string a low D, it's usually still referred to as the low E string. When you tune the low E string to a D - it allows you to play power chords (3 note chords made up of a 1, 5 and another 1) using the low E, A and D strings on the same frets. This allows you to barre these power chord shapes with single fingers, which in turn - allows you to play them with techniques that otherwise might be too tricky for regular power chords; hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends etc. Leave a comment if you dig the riff in this video! 16.01.2022 What’s your favourite overdrive/distortion pedal and why? Mine is the BOSS SD-1. I fell in love with it the moment I played through it! I like the way it tightens up the mids of a slightly broken up tone and adds generous body! ... I’m asked a lot by students about overdrive pedals and how they differ from others. I liken them to being a bit like different brands of chocolate They all taste like chocolate but they each have their own differences

15.01.2022 What’s your favourite headstock design? I’d have to say the Gibson headstock because I’m biased That being said - I think the Fender, Ibanez, Jackson style headstock is a more convenient design. It’s easier to go from tuning peg to tuning peg.... I actually think the upside down Fender style headstock is the most convenient and economical design, as much as people dislike it. This is because the tuning pegs are all lined up on the bottom of the head stock - you don’t have to lift your hand over the neck making it easier to tune quickly Photo credit - Guitar Pedal X
