25.01.2022 Beethoven and Mozart... did they meet? Some say yes, when Beethoven visited his idol in Vienna, 1787. Beethoven was just 17. Mozart was 35, in poor health and in no mood for visitors. However upon hearing Beethoven play, Mozart said to his wife Watch out for that boy. One day he will give the world something to talk about." Well probably never know if that happened, but we do know both Beethoven and Mozart gave the world something to talk about! Luckily, you can enjoy both their music at our concert on Friday, 29 November Please invite your family and friends to help celebrate our last concert of the year More info in our Facebook event and our website

25.01.2022 We're enjoying a break between Mozart and Beethoven, with some spooky chocolate

24.01.2022 We can't verify the science behind this study, but let's take a moment to appreciate our percussionists (from today's The Age)

24.01.2022 Our final concert of 2019 will celebrate the timeless music of Mozart and Beethoven. We are lucky to welcome back Lee Abrahmsen - Soprano as guest soloist The backdrop to our poster is the Burgtheater in Vienna, where The Marriage of Figaro premiered (May 1786) and Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 had its first public performance (April 1808). Our concert venue isn't quite as opulent, but well worth the visit! See our website and Facebook event for info and tickets

22.01.2022 One of our musicians is enjoying the European summer (jealous...) and took this photo for us. Can you see why? He's not in Austria, but very close! On Lake Maggiore in Laveno, northern Italy, where they specialise in mozzarella

21.01.2022 What a wonderful evening of music - we ended the year on a positive note! Thank you to our musicians, volunteers, audience and our Musical Director, Joannes Special congratulations to Lee Abrahmsen for her beautiful Mozart arias. There was lots of praise for Lee - her richness and clarity of tone, emotional connection to the music and stage presence. Bravo, Lee! We very much enjoyed performing Beethoven's 4th symphony, which is often overshadowed by his 3rd and 5th. The last movement was a speedy way to end the concert! Thank you and well done to all

21.01.2022 Tonight we're rehearsing the tricky bits of Brahms and Mendelssohn (plenty to choose from). Time for a cup of tea!

21.01.2022 "I'm here for the audition" Best wishes for the new year to all our supporters

10.01.2022 Our flautist, Mauro, has kindly researched the Burgtheater in Vienna, which features in our concert poster The old Burgtheater witnessed the premiere of many celebrated pieces of music including Mozart's opera Le Nozze di Figaro and the first public performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 - both of which we will perform this Friday 29th November at MLC in Kew. So sit back, grab a cup of tea or coffee, and enjoy. Thank you, Mauro The Burgtheater, the Austrian National Th...eatre on the Ringstraße in Vienna ranks as one of the most important theatres in the world. Its construction began in 1874 and was completed in 1888. At the time it was known as the Königlich Kaiserliches Hofburgtheater, but since 1919 it has been known as the Burgtheater. In 1945 it was largely destroyed in a bombing raid and further damaged by fire. After the war restoration of the building didn't commence until 1953 and was completed in 1955 just at the time when Austria regained its status as an independent and sovereign nation. However the Burgtheater owes its origins to the Empress Maria Theresa whose love of music and wish for a music stage next to the Hofburg Palace, authorised in 1741 the conversion of the banquet and festival hall in the Michaelerplatz (on the north eastern side of the palace) into a theatre. This new theatre "next to the Burg" was inaugurated in 1748 and was further extended in 1753. The son of the Empress, Emperor Josef II, continued this passion of music by proclaiming the building as the official court and national theatre in 1776 (the Hofburgtheater). The exterior of theatre was said to have had a barn like appearance but the wooden structure of the auditorium created a great atmosphere and the acoustics were said to be superb. One of the unique features of this complex enabled the royal family to enter the private viewing box directly from the imperial rooms. To make way for the extension of the St Michael's wing of the Hofburg Palace and to build a new theatre that would meet the demands of modern theatrical productions, the Burgtheater in the Michaelerplatz was demolished in 1888. The final performance was on October 12, 1888. Thereafter the productions were moved to the new Burgtheater in the Ringstraße. Before demolishing the old Burgtheater the city of Vienna commissioned Gustav Klimt and Franz Matsch to paint portraits of the beautiful theatre. Klimt's painting is quite detailed capturing the beauty of the auditorium as well as minute portraits of upper class individuals who spent a great deal of their time at the theatre

08.01.2022 It was wonderful to hear Lee Abrahmsen sing Mozart arias at our rehearsal last week. We had some good laughs amongst the serious concert preparation To quote Limelight Magazine, Lee has a "deliciously, full-bodied tone"; and The Age: "Abrahmsen is a revelation" You can enjoy Lee's beautiful voice at our concert this Friday, 8pm at MLC in Kew Purchase your online discount tickets here: https://www.trybooking.com/BFSFL

08.01.2022 The Melbourne Sinfonia wishes everyone a very Happy and Musical New Year Thank you all for making our 2019 concerts so enjoyable We can't end the year without a trip down memory lane, because 2019 was our 30th anniversary year! We began as the Collingwood Chamber Orchestra, founded by Kevin Morgan in 1989 with the support of the Collingwood council. The group first rehearsed at the Organ Factory Theatre in Collingwood and then at Princes Hill Primary School. The first reh...earsal comprised 9 string players and the group made its debut at Collingwood Senior Citizens Hall with 14 players. Later concerts were held in the Collingwood Town Hall. Our name changed to The Melbourne Sinfonia in late 1990 and concerts moved to Melba Hall at the University of Melbourne, where they remained until November 2011. With Melba Hall no longer available, our venue changed to MLC. Joannes Roose has been our Musical Director and Principal Conductor since 1998 Since 2004 we have been an Auxiliary of the Royal Childrens Hospital. Our unique position as a fundraiser for the RCH unites us, as we join in the spirit of enjoying music for a good cause. We currently support the RCH Gatehouse Centre which provides a crisis service and ongoing support for children and adolescents who have been sexually abused. Gatehouse helps these vulnerable young people develop resilience and other coping skills. We look forward to another year of music. Our 2020 concert dates are 20 March, 12 June, 4 September and 27 November
