23.01.2022 Here we have another one of our legendary clients @kittydearest going through the Running Workshop. Kitty presented to me in the clinic with sore right hip that got aggravated during a Tough Mudder run. She also gets quite stiff ankles in both feet. From the initial assessment, we noticed that the way she simply stands is affecting her ability to run efficiently.... Her right foot splayed out to the side and so was in a constant state of external rotation through her right hip. We then worked out that this was due to her job as a tattoo artist (check her work out, shes awesome!), for 8 years she used a foot pedal which was placed to the side of her right foot, so she was in this externally rotated position day in, day out for a damn long time. Her body adapted to this common position and so built strength there. This shape has then adopted to her stance, her walking patterns and running patterns. She would swing her right hip out to the side as she tried to run through. Overtime, this just made the right hip more unhappy and eventually started causing pain. So we did a bit of work on the treatment table to align her hips again but more of the work came down to her awareness of her stance, walking and running! Through years of sitting down and working in the studio, her body became stiff and her hips didnt allow for full range of movement. You can see from the first few videos and still picture how this has caused her to heel strike and not use the full potential of her hips. Just from working through a few drills in the Running Workshop, we were able to adjust her foot strike and unload her natural potential. Her hip issues have no disappeared and she is super aware of her positions at work and in the gym. 20.01.2022 A woman goes to her doctor in terrible back pain. It came on for no obvious reason. her doctor arranges for an MRI that reveals a herniated disc. She doesn't want surgery, so she goes to a physical therapist, who says her core is weak and she needs to do more to strengthen it. The exercises don't help, so she sees a chiro, who says her spine needs to realigned by adjustments. This works for a few days, and then seems to make things worse. A friend tells her to see a reflex...ologist. She is skeptical, but after releasing certain points on her foot, her back pain disappears. She is ecstatic but the pain returns two weeks later and soon moves to a different part of her back. Months pass and she continues to seek new solutions - acupuncture, yoga, massage and stretching. Each provider offers a different explanation for her pain and a different treatment. The treatments address alleged problems with fascia, chi, toxins, trigger points, strength, flexibility and motor control. her pain rises and falls, moves from place to place, but remains a problem. 14.01.2022 Two very different concepts!! Most people can put themselves in a certain position but the majority will not be using the optimal tension and getting the best results. As humans we are designed to hit all kinds of funky and different positions, but if you are wanting to improve these positions and build strength in these shapes, are you finding the correct tensions??... Lets take a simple Wall Ball movement and break it down: It is a full body movement involving squats and pressing, so it is a great tool to improving these patterns. The problem we see though is that the ball becomes the main focus and how quick we can throw it against the wall and catch it again. The squat gets butchered by the speed and lack of tension being supplied - knees drop inwards, unstable feet on the floor, collapsed through the torso, throwing with your traps - all just to get those faster reps! No wonder you are buggered after only a small amount of reps. Create and build tension - secure your feet to the ground (most shoes dont help this), track your knees through correct hamstring and glute tension, lock your upper torso in through your Lats and Pecs and throw the ball with more overall power. Add in a solid breathing rhythm, and all of that correct tension built into the movement will keep you throwing that ball up and down for a lot longer. You also get the added bonus of actually training your body and improving it, instead of just testing it against a clock!! A lot of this could be prevented from simple movement and balance practice.... Walking is 80% on one leg, so if anyone, old or young, has poor single leg stability, their risk of falling is massive. Its a simple fix - practice balance! Depending on your ability, start off with holding onto something and as you gain confidence and strength, gradually take your hands away. Once you are skilled at balancing on the ground, start to challenge it by standing on an uneven surface like a pillow, mattress or balance beam - get creative. 10.01.2022 It has been proposed that damage to the balance system could be a symptom of depression, which is a common physiological response after someone has suffered a stroke and lost the sense of balance. Of course, this is not a suggestion that all depression is caused by a loss of balance, but it does appear that damaged balance leads to an onset of depression. A walk through nature, whether in the woods, on the beach, or through the hills, improves one's sense of well-being.... One theory for that is because the natural world is composed entirely of fractal surfaces, which prompt the human body to engage its sense of balance and peripheral vision. The more uneven the ground, the more our balance is challenged. And the more of a challenge, the better the sense of well-being. There have been studies that look at the effect of urban living. They found that people who took walks in nature were more attentive and happier afterward than those who took walks in an urban environment, with its straight lines and flat, even surfaces. They went on to explore the possibility of a physiological effect in the brain that distinguishes between a walk in nature and an urban walk. Measuring blood flow, they saw a marked difference between the two. Myofascial cupping, (as apposed to traditional Chinese cupping, which does an amazing array of things) promotes healing and can ...effectively treat sore muscles. They pull the muscle and fascia away from the body, releasing restrictions and helping with pain management. Active Release techniques combined with this can increase their effectiveness . Great for overused tight postural muscles. Overused tight muscles from sports activities, Plantar fasciitis, Tennis Elbow , Carpal tunnel or RSI issues, Hand fatigue from grip overuse Red marks though? Appears like a bruise but not sore like bruise. Generally it’s an area that hasn’t had excellent blood and lymph flow for a while and needs a good flush out. the cupping has increased flow in that area and brought all that waste too the surface to be cleared away.

I guarantee you, no one will want to heel strike with a bare heel and no cushioning to protect it.... Shoes were only designed to protect our feet from the elements. They are now more about fashion and distorting our ability to run efficiently and pain free. Now you can run perfectly fine in ANY pair of shoes, but the majority of "running" shoes promote a poorer technique. 08.01.2022 TRAPS A bitch of a muscle! The Traps are a large muscle, split into 3 separate parts - Upper, Mid and Lower.... They spread out over the back of your torso. Each segment of the Traps come across different issues that are way too common humans today. Lower - weak and underused - Due to poor positioning and overloading of the rest of the Traps, the lower part pretty much vanish as they are overpowered. With a constant flexed torso and internally rotated shoulders, the Lower traps have little to no capacity of being utilised. Mid - Eccentrically overloaded and over-stretched - Again, due to poor posture and positions, the mid-traps are constantly loaded at their end range and become weak and overstretched. The mid-traps help to bring our shoulders blades back together but they have a crappy friendship as they spend most of their time apart. Upper - Probably the most overused muscle in the body. Once again it comes down to our posture and positions, the upper-traps are predominantly used for anything we do that involves pressing in front of us and overhead. The internally rotated shoulders limit the actions of our Pec muscles and therefore the Upper-traps try to help out and cause all kinds of issues - Pain, tension, headaches etc So to help calm this poor muscle down, here we are focusing on the Upper-traps by smashing a mobility ball into it (fun)! Its pretty easy to find the correct spot with the ball as you will probably want to jump off of it straight away. Once you have found the spot, slowly and gently move your arm around to hit all different positions. The most interesting aspect of the fascial system is that it is not just a system of separate coverings. It is actually one continuous structure that exists from head to toe wit...hout interruption. In this way you can begin to see that each part of the entire body is connected to every other part by the fascia, like the yarn in a sweater. This may seem like circular logic, but strength is where we can really get lost in fitness, and where I find my task-focused definition of fitness especially useful for keeping me on track. ... After all, what is a better measurement of how "strong" someone is than the accomplishment of an amazing feat? To perform a 200kg Squat, you need to have the skill to perform the style of Squat required to lift 200kg as well as the physiological capacity to support this movement. We define movement strength as the physiological capacity to support a movement and skill as the ability to apply this capacity to your performance. I think it's important to separate movement strength and skill because in the gym we are always working to understand our current ability in terms of adaptations that we know how to progress. 07.01.2022 OVERHEAD MOBILITY Most of us spend the majority of our days in a very flexed spine position, either over a desk or driving a car. Our spine will slowly adapt to these positions and build tightness and "strength" to help keep us there.... However, this is not good for when we want to lift something overhead or move with freedom. Grab yourself a Peanut mobility tool or 2 balls taped together and place it along your upper part of the spine (Thoracic). This can be quite tasty, so be gentle when you first start. Each of the 2 balls should be gradually digging into the tight tissue in and around the spine. Once you can sort of relax into this position, start to play with it by extended through your spine, pulling your arms overhead, giving yourself a hug and even lifting your hips up. Softer padding under the heel encourages a heel-strike action which heightens the impact force into the knees and hips.
