25.01.2022 We stand in solidarity with the NTEU and Melbourne Uni staff voting No to Chancellery's proposed variation that will cut the pay of staff. VOTE NO! https://www.facebook.com/nocutsatunimelb/posts/110275260714549?__tn__=-R

25.01.2022 The Melbourne University ALP Club calls upon Josh Frydenberg and the Liberal Party of Australia to extend the Wage Subsidy to ALL workers! Dear Mr. Frydenberg, We are writing to you as members of the Melbourne University ALP Club to request that you extend JobKeeper to all workers- casual, temporary and undocumented. We think it’s shameful that there are people living in Australia, paying their taxes and contributing to society that aren’t able to access a wage subsidy. It is... the responsibility of the government to ensure that all workers are looked after, because they are the 'quiet Australians' that the government loves to talk about. This is an unprecedented pandemic and people who would otherwise be able to get by are unable to access the support that they need to survive this pandemic. State governments have stepped up in your absence and just today the Victorian state government announced a wage subsidy package for casual workers at government owned arts centres. If the smaller state government can afford this, why can’t you. Sincerely, Collectively the members of the Melbourne University ALP Club See more

23.01.2022 CW: Racism, Police Brutality. . . . .... . . . Melbourne University ALP Club mourns George Floyd, a Bla(c)k man murdered by racist police in the United States. The police are an institution built out of racism and class warfare and as shown time and time again, they serve no purpose other than to uphold the white supremacist capitalist state. We stand in full solidarity with the protesters and rebels in Minneapolis and the rest of the US. In a country built on looted land wealth and which commodifies life itself, looting private businesses and institutions of the state is a liberating form of protest. In the words of Martin Luther King Jr- 'a riot is the language of the unheard.' We stand in solidarity with the bus drivers and their union refusing to cooperate with police and transport arrested protesters. Police are neither essential nor are they workers. We may like to think that 'Australia' is somehow not as bad the US but the fact is that since the royal commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody in 1991, over 400 First Nations people have died in custody without a single officer being convicted. 'Australia' is built on the ongoing genocide of First Nations people- something which both parties are complicit in. We may be watching the US from the sidelines but when our turn comes we will make no excuses for the terror.

23.01.2022 A budget that taxes big business to fix our mental health system, invests record amounts into infrastructures, spends $5.3 billion to build more homes and nearly half a billion tackling domestic violence sounds pretty good to us! Massive thumbs up

22.01.2022 Nobody in the world, nobody in history, has ever gotten their freedom by appealing to the moral sense of the people who were oppressing them. Assata Shakur, 1987 CW: Police Violence, State Violence 1000 days ago Jagtar Singh Johal, a Scottish citizen, went to his homeland of Punjab to celebrate his wedding and while there he was kidnapped by Indian government forces illegally occupying the land of Punjab. Since then he has been detained without a shred of evidence against...Continue reading

22.01.2022 The fight is now on campus! The pandemic has exposed the inherent unfairness of the system and yet the Australian government still has a chance to step in and prevent cuts to jobs, pay and conditions in the tertiary education sector. Therefore the ALP Club endorses the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) national day of action and unequivocally supports staff in their campaign against cuts to jobs, pay and conditions. ... Staff working conditions are student learning conditions so join the campaign here: https://www.facebook.com/events/581354245838223/

21.01.2022 Former club member, UMSU President and current National Union of Students President Molly Willmott spoke today on the ABC in response to the Liberal government’s budget and higher education reform that will see 40% of degrees increase in cost. The government is making university education even more inaccessible for people from low socioeconomic backgrounds, disabled people, people of colour, Indigenous people, and people from regional areas. The ALP Club is disgusted by the...se changes to higher education, and the ways in which these reforms continue to lower the standard of education in Australia. University education should be FREE for all students, domestic and international, and these changes continue the decades long trend of the corporatisation of higher education in this country. SHAME. Melbourne University Students will be hosting an online rally to protest the cuts to the uni that Vice Chancellor Duncan Maskell is making. Melbourne University is currently being run as a for profit corporation rather than an institution of education. See you all there https://fb.me/e/1NpdVCTLu

18.01.2022 The Labor Party was founded from the Trade Union movement. Tonight we went back to our roots and explored the history of Trades Hall and Victorian Unions hosted by Ingrid Stitt, Minister for Workplace Safety and former ASU Secretary. Thanks to Young Labor Left Victoria for hosting!

17.01.2022 Thank you Young Labor Left Victoria for organising Budget Trip 2021! After this week, we continue to be inspired by the senior Left on their advocacy and determination to push progressivism through the party. We got the amazing opportunity to meet Left MPs and discuss about the Government’s budget as well as watch Labor’s response to it. It is more important than ever to join Labor’s movement towards progressive, honest and real policies. If you want to get involved to help Labor win government and come along to campus events, message the page

15.01.2022 Scott Morrison has absolutely no idea what’s going on. Today, the second Morrison stimulus package failed to give any reprieve to students struggling on Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY, and AUSTUDY. Students are losing their jobs, our campuses are closing, and we’re about to take a hit with housing and cost of living. We will bare the brunt of this crisis. ... The government needs to act.

15.01.2022 We condemn Dan Andrews decision to endorse heavy handed police action on tomorrow's Black Lives Matter protest. In the words of Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance (the organisers of the rally), "We will protest because we believe that standing up for Black peoples right to life is an ESSENTIAL SERVICE." The Premier has said today he 'understands the depth of feeling on this issue' but does he really? This same government has increased police and prison funding every year s...ince it's been elected on a so called 'progressive' platform. As recently as December 2019, the police were given AR-15 semi automatic rifles for use. Actions speak louder than words and performatively proclaiming Black Lives Matter while at the same time militarising the police more than any Liberal government shows where the priorities of this government lie. If the government was actually serious about public safety in this pandemic, they would provide support for casual workers and international students to navigate through this time. 'Public safety' is only put at the forefront when attempting to crack down on oppressed people fighting for their safety. For a government that has been all about the safety of capital, it's rich that the safety of public is now a legitimate concern only when the interests of capital and the colonial state are threatened. If the premier is now about non violence, will we see the abolition of the most violent gang of them all- the police force? The Premier on Wednesday said that "If it’s not peaceful, then it is not a protest. Has he forgotten the history of the movement that props up his government and gets him elected? The workplace rights won by the labour movement came about through direct action, not through asking the oppressors nicely. The Premier is happy to ride the coattails of the broader left wing movement and performatively march in front of union rallies but when it comes time to act, the government's true colours and allegiance to capital and the colonial state are shown. We denounce the comments made by the Premier and various Ministers and encourage everyone who is able to, to attend the rally on Saturday. https://www.facebook.com/events/2523873747926996/

14.01.2022 The Melbourne University ALP club would like to congratulate Sheena Watt who was sworn in today as the new member for Metropolitan North. We know Sheena will bring her staunch progressive values into parliament and be a voice for her community. We look forward to her continuing her long history of activism and union values as an elected representative As a proud Yorta Yorta woman, Sheena also becomes the first female indigenous ALP MP in State Parliament. Representation matt...ers, and it’s so important to have indigenous voices both in State Parliament and the ALP caucus. The ALP still has a long way to go in enabling indigenous and POC voices but this is certainly a step in the right direction. There’s never been a more important time for strong leadership and we know that Sheena will stand up for the Northern Metropolitan region as well as for all Victorians.

13.01.2022 It's important to just take a step back sometimes and chill with some comrades. Especially during times like these. So we held our first online trivia today and it was a great time for everyone involved. We'll be back on the activism this Friday with the online climate strike at 12 so if you would like to get involved in more chill events as well as activism, message the page!

10.01.2022 The Melbourne Uni ALP Club is proud to endorse Sheena Watt for the Northern Metropolitan Region preselection. Sheena Watt is a Yorta Yorta woman, staunch progressive, activist and unionist, working in diversity and inclusion employment and public health advocacy. With years working in and alongside the Union movement, we know that Sheena will be a strong voice in our parliament. The Northern Metro vacancy is a great opportunity to put a fighter in the Victorian parliament - we call on the ALP National Executive to support Sheena’s candidacy.

10.01.2022 URGENT The future of Australian Students is at stake. This Liberal Government have repeatedly shown their disdain for students and this is yet another disgraceful attack on higher education. ... The proposed legislation will see dramatic fee hikes, funding drops and students being denied access to HECS, making university inaccessible for so many sections of society. Only one vote stands in the way of this awful bill passing, Centre Alliance Senator Stirling Griff. We desperately need your help to get him to stop this bill from passing. Email: (click this link and fill in the subject, your name and campus) https://tinyurl.com/yd8dvx9u Tweet Centre Alliance representatives and tell them to vote this legislation down: Rebekha Sharkie MP - @MakeMayoMatter Senator Sterling Griff - @Stirling_G

08.01.2022 : Wage Subsidy Nay: Wage Subsidy but it doesn't apply to all workers COVID-19 is a global crisis, it doesn't discriminate in who it infects. Everyone is feeling the effects of Coronavirus, so why is the Morrison government discriminating in who the wage subsidy applies to. Sign the petition below to send a message that we need a wage subsidy for all workers.... https://www.megaphone.org.au//coronavirus-wage-subsidies-n

08.01.2022 Today we marched for Climate Justice. As young people we need to be sending a message to Scott Morrison that we are in a climate emergency and we’re sick of his inaction. Now is the time for climate action and the Liberal party are not going to deliver it.

03.01.2022 Thank you to the Left caucus at Vic Parliament for spending time with Young Labor Left Victoria! It was amazing meeting ministers and such a great opportunity to tour the Parliament with those who know it best! We were inspired by your words and feel hopeful because we have members who represent real progressive policy and ideas. It makes us proud to support the senior Left and the broader Labor movement

03.01.2022 PwC Australia needs to #cutallties if they are serious about being sustainability leaders. By being a member of Minerals Council of Australia they are funding helping fund advertising and lobbying campaigns in favour of large mining corporations at the expense of the environment. They claim to be #PwCproud about being sustainability leaders but they cannot be serious about this until they cut all ties. Solidarity with UMSU Environment Collective in this campaign, sign the petition in the link below
