25.01.2022 This series of gorgeous photos from @mymidwifetia perfectly illustrate the perfect time to clamp the cord and tie on a cord tie. . . We usually wait until well... afted the placenta has been released. Cord tying usually happens 2-3 hours after birth..There's no rush! . From My Midwife Tia: "Are you familiar with why we wait for the white when clamping or cutting your babys umbilical cord? Its known as delayed cord clamping. If you take a look at the first couple photos youll see what your babys cord may look like at birth. At that time theres still about a 1/3 of your babys blood pumping through the cord and placenta. The latter photos show what the cord looks like after waiting a while. Physiologic cord camping allows for optimal transfusion of this blood which is necessary for your babys health. DCC results in a boost of your babys blood supply & higher iron levels, which is vital for healthy brain development and increased oxygenation for your baby. Midwives have always practiced delayed clamping and cutting while many providers clamp as soon as the baby is placed on moms chest. Policys are being updated as hospitals become more mom & baby friendly & providers are catching up on the evidence. Dont hesitate to state your desires to delay clamping the cord if you birth in a space where this isnt the norm. The time delayed varies by many providers, but a rule of thumb would be to wait until the cord is no longer pulsing. If you view many out of hospital birth photos & see the baby still attached to the placenta, this is why. Did you delay clamping and cutting your babys cord? Why or why not? 25.01.2022 "Women should be given information before they give birth to help them make informed choices." Begley et al (2019) wrote this in their review of the research ...around the birth of the placenta, but it's true of every other area of maternity care as well. If youd like to know more about the birth of the placenta, Dr Nadine Edwards and I have written a book on this topic. Called Birthing Your Placenta: the third stage of labour, it has been so popular over the years that we are now on the fourth edition. And its designed to help you understand the different options, no matter what kind of birth youre looking for. 23.01.2022 I wrote this and recorded it a couple of Months ago after Kelsey and Sashis Birth! This is for all of the Mummas! It has been an incredible year supporting and... standing by families as they moved through this powerful life changing dance into parenthood. My heart overflows with gratitude and love for each and everyone of you that I have met , either in the studio or been present at the birth of your babies. I see you! I am just here to remind you of your Divine power , wisdom and love. With all my heart. Mel See more
23.01.2022 Are you ready? my counselor asked me. Are you ready for birth? . Yes. I am eerily calm and at peace. At any moment I could be ushered into some of the most ...intense physical sensations of my life. I wait in the anteroom for my baby to call my name, and I will enter the liminal space where together we will rock and sway and moan across the divide of worlds. . Two years ago I also felt at peace in the last couple weeks of waiting for birth. But this time is different. The peace is deeper. I didnt know it could go deeper, but here I am. Two years ago I also didnt know I could live more awake than I was living, but here I am. This is where motherhood has traveled me. . I almost dont trust itthis peace to my core. I keep waiting to feel anxious or scared, to feel one last surge of doubt, to want to run in the other direction. . Let it come if it must. No feeling will be wasted. I am in the room where the warrior gets painted and dressed in the ceremonial cloths of her ancestors. I will not be shaken, only inspired toward purpose. . I approach with curiosity, wondering how it will feel to be in my body in this birth. Will it be a long journey, requiring extended periods of rest and quiet? Will it be a fast birth that catches me by surprise, challenging what I know of myself as the slow and steady worker? Will I desire privacy as I enter my own labor bubble or will I want the constant presence of loving, reassuring hands? . Whatever course this birth takes, I know this: it is the journey of the warrior. I will engage with the experience meaningfully. I will learn about myself and my child. . We will take new breaths together in the great hall of our ancestors and angels and the whole assembly of creation, where we all meet to be born and to die. We will walk out of the labyrinth new. 22.01.2022 Every woman, every birth , every baby is different! It so important to be completely present and remember that! Birth held with patience , trust and love for the uniqueness that unfolds in each birth.
22.01.2022 A reminder that, earlier this year, expert researchers at Oxford Brookes University brought together research on childbirth, birth setting and the use of water ...immersion in labour and shared key points which highlighted the safety and benefits of the use of water for labour and birth, during and beyond the coronavirus pandemic. Their points included that: Water immersion for healthy women is associated with a number of beneficial maternal outcomes with no known adverse risks to the neonate. COVID-19 is not a waterborne virus, therefore, the water environment dilutes respiratory droplet and faecal contamination potential. In the Coronavirus context, water immersion presents a lower risk of contamination risk for midwives compared with bed birth because it promotes the use of social distancing without interrupting normal midwifery care. Burns et al (2020) The authors also noted that: "The birthing pool environment presents a natural barrier between the woman and her midwife. Supporting women in the water reduces droplet, aerosol and faecal contamination, presenting a low-risk transmission activity for the Coronavirus. Water immersion for healthy women is associated with a number of beneficial maternal outcomes with no known adverse risks to the neonate. For primiparous women, birthing in midwifery-led settings (AMU/FMU or home) water immersion reduces transfer rate with the greatest benefit seen at FMU. Water immersion for labour and/or birth should be supported and encouraged as an effective method of analgesia." Burns E, Feeley C, Venderlaan J et al (2020). 17.01.2022 When girls grow up understanding that birth is a natural , beautiful rite of passage , it imprints on them that birth is not something to fear, but a grand adventure to look forward to! That is how I looked at birth before the birth of my first child! Not because I had seen a birth, but because I explored and listened to all the powerful birth stories that inspired me! I listened to stories about birthing on country, Homebirth, positive stories for induced births and cesarean... births, I looked for the pearls of wisdom in every single story! Knowing what you want in your birth does not make you ignorant to the endless possibilities that can unfold unexpectedly, knowing what you want gives you direction and momentum to create an empowered and positive experience however your birth unfolds. Knowledge is powerful and so is a positive mindset! Where our mind goes, our energy flows! See more

14.01.2022 All screening tests have downsides. They may lead to overuse of intervention. And every time we use technology like this, we are undermining womens own knowled...ge. The constant use of technology implies that our bodies arent capable of growing, birthing and feeding babies without a shed load of expensive machinery. And thats not just true. I spent last week chatting with a wonderful, passionate group of midwives, obstetricians, doulas, childbirth educators, hypnobirthing teachers and other birth workers from around the world, and this came up - again - as a key theme that so many of us are experiencing. It's so important to keep sharing positive messages about the awesomeness of the female body. And to remind people that we did this for millions of years before the machines came along. If it hadn't worked, none of us would be here today. If you'd like more information, see www.sarawickham.com where I have a whole information hub on screening as well as more than 500 pages of information. #midwife #midwifery #doula #decisionmaking #decisions #whatsrightforme #book #bookstagram #childbirth #childbirtheducator #childbirtheducation #hypnobirthing #pregnancy #pregnancyyoga #women #birthrights #trustbirth See more
13.01.2022 When the power of pain , tragedy and grief rises , the veil we wear in everyday life lifts and we are shown the very core of who we are!! This can be overwhelmi...ng as it hits like a tsunami and takes us into a place of raw vulnerability! What if we took the veil away everyday and just moved with the waves ones at a time and saw the raw open vulnerability as a way of healing ! What if we saw it as a gateway to transformation and greater awareness. During birth , the sensations in our bodies send messages to the brain , the brain then responds with the necessary hormones being released for our bodies to birth! So too in life, our bodies are sending messages all day long! If we cover, hide , conceal , avoid and ignore what is being felt , the communication breaks down. Same in relationships with others and with the EARTH! Connection is EVERYTHING! Lift the veil, reveal, feel and heal! Breathe , Dance, Sing, Paint, play music... Whatever moves you, lean into it!! #healingdance #breathe #yoga #broome See more

08.01.2022 Hello, So ..... I have been asked by so many of you over the years to record something for you to have at home and in your labour! I have also begun supporting mummas outside of Broome. A few weeks ago , I was sitting at the beach thinking about you all, as I always do! I decided there and then , unscripted and spontaneously, to record my voice saying a lot of the things I say in class. I sent it out to some of you and the feed back was great!... You were dedicating time to practice at home with the recording. I am now playing around by adding some images to the audio. My intention is to encourage you to do the practice we do in class, everyday and to be able to expand on the way I support you. I hope you like it. Mel See more

07.01.2022 VERNIX CASEOSA.... Vernix is a thick creamy waxy substance that covers the body of the newborn (reminds me of cocoa butter!). It's seen more in babies born a co...uple of weeks prior to the 'due date' as it reduces towards the end of pregnancy. It is made up of water, fats and proteins. The vernix protects and nourishes the baby's soft skin, has antimicrobial properties and acts as a barrier in the uterus to stop the amniotic fluid macerating the skin in the womb. Can you imagine how your skin would look after 9 months in the bath! . Vernix is thought to help with an easier transition through the birth canal and it thought to aid temperature regulation at birth. . When a baby is born, the newborn skin undergoes a number of changes and adaptions to the outside world in terms of PH and hydration. Vernix helps to regulate these changes so its worthwhile not bathing baby to soon. Think of vernix as a moisturiser and rub it in rather than wipe it off! . It is recommended by WHO to wait at least 24 hours before bathing a newborn (I would even say 2/3 days) as it has its benefits including reduced risk of infection, better temperature regulation, more skin to skin time leading to better breastfeeding outcomes and blood sugar regulation. If your baby has a little dried blood in their hair and it bothers you, you can always wipe the hair gently with a cloth and warm water.
