24.01.2022 This has been a most unusual and difficult year for so many communities across the country. With many expecting and new parents struggling due to COVID-19 and associated restrictions, it’s critical that we work together to support families facing mental health challenges at this time. This means PANDA Week is more important than ever.... For the last fifteen years, PANDA has been using a week in November to raise awareness about perinatal mental illness and to reduce stigma so those affected can seek help. The theme for PANDA Week 2020 is ‘Tell someone who cares’. This year, more than ever it’s vital that expecting and new parents who are struggling know they’re not alone and can reach out for help. And just as importantly, they can know that when they do reach out, they will be supported by those they confide in, whether family members, health professionals, PANDA or other perinatal mental health specialists. 16.01.2022 Addiction to drugs, alcohol or gambling is a significant problem in Australia, but its prevalence can take people by surprise. The number of Australians experiencing addiction is increasing, but support isn’t. While many people could identify what addictive behaviours might look like, Professor Dan Lubman, from SBS TV's new series 'Addicted Australia' says visible signs are the tip of the iceberg. ... It’s more than just the act of using drugs or drinking, he says. It’s far more complex. It’s about underlying trauma, isolation or mental health, as well as social and cultural challenges people face. Professor of addiction studies and services at Monash University, Professor Dan Lubman is also the director of the Monash Addiction Research Centre, and executive clinical director of the treatment, education and research centre Turning Point: https://www.turningpoint.org.au/ An important read: https://www.theguardian.com//addiction-is-a-chronic-health #mentalhealthvictoria #mentalhealth #mentalhealthaustralia #connectedformentalhealth #InThisTogether #mentalhealthawareness #wellbeing #mentalhealthmatters #mentalwellness #suicideprevention Turning Point

15.01.2022 Men make up an average of 6 out of every 8 suicides every single day in Australia. The number of men who die by suicide in Australia every year is nearly double the national road toll. On average, 1 in 8 men will experience depression and 1 in 5 men will experience anxiety at some stage of their lives.... Men are known for bottling things up. But when you’re feeling down, taking action to call in extra support is the responsible thing to do. Trying to go it alone when you’re feeling down increases the risk of depression or anxiety going unrecognised and untreated. Depression is a high-risk factor for suicide and plays a contributing role to the big difference in suicide rates for men and women. Everyone’s mental health varies during their life and can move back and forth along their own personal range between positive and healthy at one end through to severe symptoms or conditions that impact on everyday life at the other, in response to different stressors and experiences. Effectively managing your mental health can give you significant improvements in your quality of life, increase your capacity to support your family and your mates, and let you perform at your best. 10.01.2022 If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that 2020 has been a rough year. With the pandemic taking a toll on our mental health, it’s worth asking, can Australians get help when they need it? Australians mostly access mental health care through the Medicare system, with taxpayers spending $1.3 billion a year on rebates.... But is help getting where it’s needed most? 06.01.2022 Today we welcome the news that the State Government will be investing $3.8 billion into mental health. This much-needed injection of funds is a historic commitment to improving the mental health of Victorians, and a way for our state to lead the way in mental health care. We often refer to mental health as the poor cousin of the health system. The funding announced today and the budgets that will follow will address this historic imbalance, said our CEO Angus Clelland. ...Today’s budget represents the culmination of more than two decades of advocacy efforts from individuals, carers, families, peak bodies, and mental health professionals from across Victoria." 06.01.2022 Many Melburnians are joyous at the prospect of a return to socialising, as the city regains some old freedoms this week following significantly eased coronavirus restrictions. Social media is teeming with images of people looking ecstatic about the end of lockdown. But in stark contrast to these images, some people might feel nervous about socialising or going out again especially those who were anxious before the pandemic. If you feel like your social skills are a bit rust...y, you might feel more comfortable at home. And the fear of another lockdown might also make you want to avoid going out altogether. And on top of these, there’s a raft of new and often complicated rules to understand, which can be overwhelming and draining. Then there’s the stress and pressure of making plans and having busy schedules again. However, it’s important to remember there are ways to cope. 03.01.2022 "Mental illness costs Australia about $200 billion to $220 billion a year, about 10 per cent of GDP, according to the Productivity Commission." - Prof Allan Fels on why Victoria's mental health levy is the way forward for efficiently fixing the mental health system.
