23.01.2022 It’s been a Schitt’s year and we Carey about you.

23.01.2022 Supporting young children to understand and manage the impact of COVID-19 is an important role for parents, carers and educators. Educators play a key role in guiding children and other adults to manage the influx of information and decipher which parts are relevant with direct meaning to their daily lives and activities. It is crucial to differentiate between information required for adults and the necessary facts required for children to process the current situation. Child...ren do not need to be impacted by the fear, panic or concern that adults may be experiencing. Children require clear, concise, development appropriate, factual information. 1. Consider how you provide key concepts based on facts and allow children to ask questions. If you dont know the answer let them know you will try and find out. 2. Limit exposure to news on television, radio, tablets and other devices. 3. Ensure children are not active and/or passive participants in adult conversations. 4. As your world changes explain why. Above all ensure children have the opportunity to play freely as this is how they understand and make sense of their world. Adults have much to gain from observing childrens play and listening to their language. Through these mechanisms we gain an insight into their thinking, which is sometimes well beyond our own. This current situation gives us an extraordinary opportunity to learn about ourselves and others. Be mindful of what you are teaching, childrens learning will last well beyond the current crisis.

16.01.2022 SNAICC, in partnership with the National Office for Child Safety, has developed resources to support organisations working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Isl...ander children, young people and communities to implement the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations (National Principles). The Keeping Our Kids Safe resources apply a cultural lens to the National Principles to help organisations think about how to make themselves safer for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. SNAICC, with the help of Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency - VACCA, has created (1) a guide, Keeping Our Kids Safe: Cultural Safety and the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations, that gives practical advice on how to implement the National Principles in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and communities, and (2) an animated video, Keeping Our Kids Safe: Understanding Cultural Safety in Child Safe Organisations, that gives viewers an introduction to the National Principles through a cultural lens. 06.01.2022 The event of educators, families and children having to adapt to changed circumstances has highlighted that partnerships, collaboration, shared experiences and communication are integral for sustained learning. Its not about the format but the process and COVID-19 offered the opportunity to do it differently. Thoughts?

03.01.2022 Lots of ways to fill your bucket, this one might work for you...

03.01.2022 **3 ways to discuss racism & reconciliation with kids** Having conversations with children about racism is important, but equally as important, anti-racism need...s to be actively lived and modelled every day and teachers and parents alike play a critical role in this. 1. Understand your own personal/cultural identity and the biases that you hold. For teachers and parents, this may become a journey of unlearning and relearning of challenging assumptions and recognising that what has been taught about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures in schools may have been inaccurate or incomplete. https://bit.ly/UnlearningRelearningVideo 2. Have a zero-tolerance approach to racism at home and at school. For example, hold people accountable: if a friend, family member or even a stranger makes a racist remark, address it in the moment (if safe to do so) and follow up soon after with your child. 3. Actively listen to and amplify voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by reading childrens books, media, and films by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors and artists. Recommendations: Narragunnawali platform is full of support, resources & is free for everyone to access: https://bit.ly/NarragunnawaliEducation NITV excellent suite of childrens programs are ideal, for example Lil Jay and Big Cuz: https://bit.ly/LilJandBigCuz The many childrens books by Anita Heiss and also her anthology about growing up Aboriginal: https://bit.ly/GrowingUpAboriginalBook Briggs new book Our Home Our Heartbeat: https://bit.ly/BriggsBook The childrens story of the Uluru Statement Finding Our Heart: https://bit.ly/FindOurHeartBook #Reconciliation #InThistogether2020
