25.01.2022 Intercol was a tight contest with Mercedes College winning the 2020 competition: 11 Shields to Saint Ignatius’ College 10 Shields. It is always fantastic when we have a close result, but more importantly, all participants from both colleges competed with great spirit and camaraderie. Well done to all students involved, and to all the amazing coordinators, coaches, support staff and parent volunteers who helped make Intercol possible this year.... By Mr Wray.

25.01.2022 Congratulations everyone you all made it to the end of the 2020 school year! Today Middle School students gathered for their end of year presentations, including announcing the recipients of the Mercy Key Awards. Two students in each year level were recognised for demonstrating one of the six Mercy Keys of Compassion, Integrity, Justice, Mutual Respect, Loyalty and Responsibility throughout the year. Well done to all award winners. Junior and Senior School students gathe...red together for their end of year liturgy. While leaving the school, Junior students were visited by a special guest who borrowed the ground staff's buggy to get to Kiss & Drop! We wish our entire community a holy and merry Christmas, and a happy new year.

25.01.2022 Congratulations to the Mercedes College Blue team who qualified for the Debating SA Year 6/7 semi finals held at Nazareth College. The topic for the debate was 'That banning of plastic straws, stirrers and cutlery in South Australia is a bad idea'. The Mercedes team took the negative position to this topic presenting a strong case. The standard of debating was excellent! Well done to Black Forest Primary School who won the semi final.

25.01.2022 Good news today, as the South Australian Premier announced schools, including Mercedes College, will reopen on Monday 23 November. For our College this means a return to face-to-face teaching, as students return to normal classes. Please stay safe and enjoy your weekend after this unusual week. We look forward to seeing everyone back at the College on Monday.

24.01.2022 Year 6 students took part in a special Week Without Walls, designed to take them out of the classroom and provide experiences to help them develop skills as caring and active global citizens. The programme encouraged students to undertake new challenges, plan and initiate activities, work collaboratively with others, engage in current issues of global and local significance, and develop new skills and understandings. "Week Without Walls was a fun and refreshing week because we got to have a break from normal school routine, do creative and challenging activities and connect with our classmates." - Mariella, Year 6.

21.01.2022 Junior School students had a lot of fun at the Reception - Year 5 Sports Day! It feels like a long time ago, but it was only Monday morning when students were competing in great spirit in a range of track, field and novelty events. Thank you to all the parents and staff who helped, and we're grateful to have been able to have an active Monday.

21.01.2022 A highlight for many this year has been the Student Mentoring Programme, or SMP. SMP is a school based, wellbeing programme. We provide time and space for our students to embrace their individual, academic and personal needs, while encouraging the discovery of strengths, interests and learning abilities. Throughout 2020, 62 Year 12 students have generously given their time and skills to the Student Mentoring Programme, where they were connected with a younger student to p...rovide 1:1 mentoring. The programme is also open to other members of our community, and it's great to see old scholars come back to mentor each year.

21.01.2022 Year 9 students welcomed a special guest at their end of year celebrations today, with Port Adelaide player Hamish Hartlett presenting awards for the internal Piston Cup competition. The Piston Cup is a unique competition for Year 9 students. Its focus is to unite the cohort and establish positive and respectful relationship with each other in a friendly competition. Each Home Group competes in different sports to obtain the title of Piston Cup Winners. This year we award t...he Piston to 9DV for their fantastic effort in all sports and united team spirit. Well done to all Year 9 Students on their efforts to play fairly throughout the term (and thanks for visiting, Hamish)!

21.01.2022 On Saturday the Mercedes Open A Girls Soccer team played a friendly match against the Mercedes Old Collegiates Women’s Soccer team. It's always great when our current players are able to play against our old scholars - and highly anticipated!

19.01.2022 It was great for Year 5 students to be able to share their work with family at the recent PYP Exhibition. The exhibition is an opportunity for Year 5 students to showcase their understanding of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). Through a collaborative investigation of a local or global issue, students inquired, collaborated, applied skills and explored an understanding of concepts that they have developed over the past six years in the PYP. Students exhibited their unde...rstanding of the problems associated with the issue, created and identified solutions and promoted and celebrated ideas for action, to help reduce the problem. They deserve a huge congratulations for the creativity, hard work and initiative that they have demonstrated at each stage of this process. Well done Year 5 students! With the re-opening of schools on Monday, Year 5 students now look forward to their PYP Graduation next week, before entering the Middle School in 2021.

16.01.2022 An advantage of Reception - Year 12 students all being together in a single location is the buddy programme, allowing younger and older students to interact together. After it wasn't possible earlier in the year, it's been great to see Year 12 students forming friendships with Reception - Year 2 students. The Year 12s enjoy a break from their studies, while the Junior School students are always excited to show their new friend their favourite activities.

15.01.2022 In the sunshine yesterday, Reception - Year 7 students participated in our Annual Mercy Fun Run. The money raised will be donated to Mercy Works including Catherine House (homeless women), Adelaide Day Centre (homeless men) and the Kilburn Centre for recently arrived refugees. Well done to all involved!

15.01.2022 Catholic schools across the country celebrated 200 years of Catholic education in Australia today with a national Mass. Year 12 students Seamus, Vesace, Lily, Thinakaran and Elise were proud to represent Mercedes at the Mass at St Francis Xavier's Cathedral, which was held alongside those in other states and territories.

14.01.2022 Congratulations to the Open Table Tennis team on being named premiers of the Sports Association for Adelaide Schools (SAAS) competition with an undefeated season in 2020!

14.01.2022 Congratulations to the Class of 2020 SACE students on your outstanding results! It has been a tough year for everyone, but especially for Year 12 students, and we are proud of your resilience, leadership and all you have achieved this year. Provisional results at a glance: ... 39% of our SACE students exceeded an ATAR of 90 with 16% gaining a 95 or higher. 164 students across Years 11 and 12 SACE gained an A grade in at least one Year 12 subject. Our full results, including the 2020 Dux, will be finalised with the release of the IB Diploma Programme results on 3 January.

11.01.2022 It was fantastic to welcome back 45 old scholars ranging from the Class of 1995 - 2020 today for Year 12 Career Mentoring. In small groups, students had the opportunity to hear from two old scholars -- one currently studying and another working in a field of interest to them. Students really appreciate the chance to talk to people who have been in their position and gone on to study and/or work in areas they are interested in. ... Thank you to all old scholars who gave so generously of their time this morning.

11.01.2022 Happy Mercy Day to all especially the Sisters of Mercy celebrating 140 years in South Australia. We celebrated differently this year with a Mercy Day Liturgy held at the College. Some attendees participated in Gleeson Hall, while others watched a live stream. We congratulate old scholar Henry Parham as the recipient of the 2020 Mercy Award. ... Henry started his career in London, where he was the international coordinator of a group called Publish What You Pay. This group helped citizens of developing countries hold their governments accountable for revenues from the oil, gas and mining industries. He also worked with the Elders, an independent organisation of eminent global leaders brought together by Nelson Mandela. These leaders offered their collective influence and experience to support peace building, help address major causes of human suffering, and promote the shared interests of humanity. Henry was unable to join us today due to travel restrictions, but shared a video message. He is pictured here in 2018 when he presented at the IB Awards Ceremony.

10.01.2022 We would like to acknowledge the commitment of the athletics students who would have represented our City South team at the State Metro Athletics Championship last week. Unfortunately the event was not able to go ahead. The students involved had been training hard all term and showed great commitment to their sporting endeavours. We look forward to seeing them continue to improve and have the opportunity to complete next year.

09.01.2022 Welcome to the start of Term 4! We hope everyone had a relaxing holiday break. The Reception students have been busy learning about our native butterfly species. At the end of last term, they planted a native plant garden and a variety of butterfly-attracting plants for our Junior School area. They have returned today on the look out for butterflies. ... Receptions have also been busy creating a butterfly mural, which will take pride of place in the Jardin des Papillons. This is the part of the project to use our National Resource Management Grant to ‘Bring Back the Butterflies’.

08.01.2022 Yesterday Year 6 students attended and read prayers at the Catholic Charities Mass at the Adelaide Cathedral. It was a great reminder of the work of Catholic Charities, which supports people in South Australia.

07.01.2022 Congratulations to our Year 5 students who complete their journey in the Junior School today and prepare to move to the Middle School in 2021. Last week Year 5 students celebrated their graduation from Year 5 and the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). Recent restrictions meant they had to celebrate as two separate classes, but we are thankful this milestone event could proceed and each student was able to bring two guests to share this special moment. Congratulations to our Year 5 students. We are so proud of each of you and look forward to seeing all that you achieve in the years ahead - Ms Osborn.

07.01.2022 Congratulations to Layla on winning the Women's 120m 2020 Bay Sheffield Footrace! "Layla Kinnane confesses that, at 15, she isn’t fully across the 134 years of history that makes up the prestigious Bay Sheffield footrace. But I’m very keen to learn more now, the Mercedes College schoolgirl said with a laugh." ... Read more > https://www.adelaidenow.com.au//e5a258c09ac33940917f3811c1

05.01.2022 IB (International Baccalaureate) Art students presented their exhibition of work for their internally assessed component of their two year course. The work demonstrates their growth as artists, exploring painting, drawing, sculpture, digital media and photography.

05.01.2022 Earlier this month, six Year 11 students had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Ladies of Variety Picnic held at the Adelaide Zoo. "Variety is a volunteer run charity that supports children and their families who are sick and disadvantaged. We were all so excited about dressing up in the costumes and seeing the children’s reactions, it truly made our day so special. It was great to see the children interact with us. "It was a very memorable experience for us all, as it is important for everyone to come together as a community and have some fun." - Georgia and Lara (Year 11)

04.01.2022 In 2021, Year 10 students have been able to participate in Outdoor Education as an elective, ahead of considering the SACE subject in Years 11 and 12. "Outdoor Ed has been a great experience for me. So far we have bushwalked up to Brown Hill and snorkelled Port Noarlunga’s reefs, which was an unusual, but very good, experience. Outdoor Ed is great because unlike other subjects, you get to go outside of school and explore the outdoors, which is very exciting." - Kobe (Year 10).

04.01.2022 Some of our International Students are learning online until they are able to travel. It's interesting to see some of the innovative ways they are continuing to complete assignments from home. Ahrya (Year 10) has been able to combine his passion for cooking with Design. He has been working on some recipes, as well as a summative task regarding running a catering business, which delivers to your door, including a business plan and marketing materials. We applaud Ahrya's efforts and care in this practical task, and we look forward to welcoming him back to Adelaide when possible.

04.01.2022 Year 8 students went on their camp a little later than normal, but were able to head to Goolwa in Term 4. While there, they were involved in a range of exciting activities including surfing, sailing, kayaking and rock climbing. Outdoor experiences such as camps provide students with an opportunity to develop intellectually and physically. Such development enables greater self understanding and is important in developing one’s capacity to look at problems holistically and from different perspectives.

03.01.2022 Good luck to everyone participating in the final day of Intercol today - go Camels! Why is Mercedes called the Camels? We went straight to the top - Mr Gaynor - for the explanation. The name came from old scholars Peter Malinauskas and Troy Broadbridge in a Year 11 Science lesson. At the time, the College had recently started playing mid-week footy in the Southern Zone of SASSSA and were keen to adopt a unique name. ... Camels were selected because there are hardy and tough. They are indelibly imprinted in Australia’s fighting history, noted in World War I, where they carried soldiers and supplies into battle and wounded men to safety -- it was tough, but the camel was a reliable beast. Go Camels!

03.01.2022 We have been having lots of fun in Vacation Care these holidays! Today we welcomed Jodie from Animal Capers, who brought Mildred the chicken, Smiles the crocodile, a rather pretty blue tongue lizard and an amazing barn owl to visit us. There was no Royal Adelaide Show this year, so we had our own 'Show Day' on Monday celebrating with an action-packed day including a bouncing castle. ... On Tuesday we were visited by Liesl von der Borch and Auntie Elaine who shared stories, songs and craft activities pertaining to Kaurna culture. Wednesday saw us involved with several 'Minute to Win It' challenges around the school.

01.01.2022 Our Reception students enjoyed their trip to Paris last week. As part of their French lessons, they arrived at the airport, went through security and caught their flight to Paris, all from the comfort of their classrooms -- they even got to share tea with Mr Balkwill in the Frequent Flyers Club. Upon arriving in Paris, students practised French by ordering a croissant in a café and visited landmarks including the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe.

01.01.2022 It is our last day of Vacation Care today we have done so many different things these holidays! We finished last week with a Teddy Bear’s Picnic in the Carrick Hill gardens, and began this week at AFL Max. Next we were up on our feet learning groovy Zumba dance steps, before taking part in a stand up paddle board session yesterday. ... We finished today with a trip to Mitcham Cinemas, where we had the whole cinema to ourselves! With that we say goodbye to a wonderful school holidays and look forward to a happy start to Term 4.
