12.01.2022 Merimbula Reef Comes Alive! Check out this short video for a glimpse of the amazing fish life around the recently deployed Merimbula Offshore Artificial Reef! T...here are heaps of baitfish (yellowtail aka yakkas) plus a few kingies lurking around the Pinnacle Reef Tower. The reef has only been deployed for nine months so it's encouraging to see that it's already producing plenty of activity. It will be really interesting to see what the Merimbula reef produces when the water warms up again next season! The Merimbula Offshore Artificial Reef is a great example of your licence fees at work. For more info on artificial reefs in NSW, see https://bit.ly/2ihk54G

05.01.2022 Great news for Hunter coast fishos with two new artificial reef towers deployed on the weekend! The steel reef structures were towed into place over the weekend... from Newcastle Harbour to their new home just over 3.5km from the entrance to Lake Macquarie. Carefully sunk remotely from a nearby tug, their final position lies on the sandy seafloor some 28m below the surface. The whole operation was undertaken over three days with the massive 90 tonne structures lifted into the water on Friday ready for their last voyage to their new home south of Newcastle. It's a great time of year to install new reefs with spring just around the corner. Think of these huge metal behemoths as the skeleton of a soon-to-be thriving fish community. The new reefs will be rapidly colonised by marine vegetation and a variety of other organisms which will in turn be followed by baitfish and then the larger predatory fish such as snapper, mulloway and kingfish which feed on them. See https://bit.ly/2ihk54G for GPS co-ordinates of the Newcastle reef as well as full details on our ever-expanding artificial reef network, including reefs planned for Wollongong, the Tweed, Batemans Bay and Jervis Bay. This is your fishing licence at work!
