17.01.2022 I FORGOT MY VOWS Many couples like to write and recite their own special vows for their wedding ceremony. It is always a good idea for your Marriage Celebrant to have a copy of your vows on hand, just in case you need some prompting. WHY CAN’T I REMEMBER MY VOWS? Even after weeks of practice many couples cannot remember their vows during the ceremony. Why is this?... Your wedding ceremony is such an emotional time your system makes some subtle changes in your body chemistry without you even knowing. During this emotional and stressful time your adrenal gland responds giving you a dose of adrenalin. Adrenalin has the effect of, making your heart beat faster, you breathe shallower and you get slight tremors (weak knees) the shakes are caused by your system taking oxygen from non-essential organs and moving it to your muscles. You may feel a queasy tummy and your brain gets foggy. This is caused by the movement of oxygen from the non-essential area of the brain that we use for higher level thinking skills, like remembering your vows. Taking deep breaths can help, but it can take 15 to 20 minutes for the fog to lift as the adrenalin is flushed from your system. In extreme cases you may forget your partners name or your own. It is always a good idea for you to make sure your Celebrant has a copy of your vows, just in case you need a prompt or help with all your lines. This is why your Celebrant says repeat after me when you make your declaration such as: "I call upon the persons here present to witness that I, AB, take you CD to be my lawful wedded wife (or husband)" There is no need to feel embarrassed about this as it is a perfectly natural reaction. Your Celebrant is there to help and your family and friends will not even notice.
