24.01.2022 Photo by Your Birth Photography Riding the waves Visualisations are a handy labour tool. Did you know that your brain needs to use extra neurons to be able to visualise images and deploys them from areas where pain is perceived. How clever is that! Visualise yourself riding your waves in your ocean. Visualise yourself being drawn up and then gently coming down the other side. Totally, deeply relaxed and immersed in the blue of the ocean. 23.01.2022 Midweek awwww moment. This kid has spunk!

22.01.2022 Dad’s fascilitating birth! YES!!! This is a magical experience and can be just as much a sense of achievement for the birth partner as for the birthing women bringing new life earth side. This can be an option in hospital as much as at home birth. Have you asked your care provider to assist facilitate this involvement? No?! Then what are you waiting for? Strike up the conversation.... #dadsatbirth #birthsupport #rockyourbirth #waterbirth #homebirth #hospitalbirth #yougotthis

22.01.2022 Rhea Dempsey is an awesome birth educator. I have had the pleasure of doing a birth educators workshop with her as a young grad midwife and seen her working with one of my women back in the day also. I would highly recommend joining in on this coversation.

21.01.2022 A must see if you are planning or having a baby! Look out for screening in your local area.

21.01.2022 This is one of the more balanced discussions I’ve heard in a long time about home birth. Please set aside an hour and have a listen. Happy #internationalmidwivesday2021

20.01.2022 Its birth trauma week (7th - 12th September 2020). We need to acknowledge birth trauma is real. It is real for the mother, the partner and even for the care giver that witnesses a birth go a wry. But it is possible to heal.

18.01.2022 If you are still in doubt ... "Infection rates in water, when guidelines and cleaning protocols are followed, are always less than infections on the bed." https://www.all4maternity.com/sustaining-the-power-of-wat/

18.01.2022 Ask your care provider if their organisations guidelines has caught up with NICE recommendations. Or better still incorporate them in your VBAC birth plans and cite the recommendations, after all it based on the latest evidence.

17.01.2022 Variations in normal presentations can be achieved. With individualised care and compassionate caregivers and an empowered mama. Changing birth culture one mama at a time.

16.01.2022 Interesting topic huh! What’s your thoughts? What’s your worries? What if I told you it’s such an amazing experience for them there. That they cope much better than you think. My first three were home to witness the birth of their brother, (obviously I had a home birth). The plan was to send them to school, but being in active labour in the wee hours of the morning changed that plan. They placed a cool cloth on my head/neck. They made sure I kept up my fluids, they played go-...fer whenever I needed something and supported their father, support me. They cried when their sibling was born, and even cut the umbilical cord. We had a full house with the birth of my grandchild in the family home, with my youngest in kindergarten. He woke up just minutes after the birth, walked in so unfazed, had a quick look and went back to bed. Boom! That’s how we normalise birth. Instead of making it out to be some sort of medical emergency like depicted on TV/movies, creating fear and mystery, we have drawn a picture of a normal life event and biological function. Do you have a story? #kidsatbirth #birth

15.01.2022 Women non-pharmacological pain management options - namely water immersion/birth - should not be penalised because DHHS and their decision makers deem wet PPE ineffective. Clearly they have no idea how water immersion or birth works and have not consulted with those in the know. The solution should be sort out the PPE concerns, not add further anxiety to women and their birthing options. 14.01.2022 Living fluid, preventative medicine.... did you know.....

14.01.2022 I birthed big babies ... my last two were just over 4kg. My sister birthed above average weight babies and so did my mother. So in general this is how we grow our babies. With that mindset I never doubted I wouldn’t be able to birth my babies via the biologically expected mode. But with ultrasound being used as diagnostics instead of what it is; screening...and not explained well is an estimate within a +/- 15% of probably weight, women are scared into accepting an intervention that may cascade to the scenario caregivers are trying to avoid in the first instance.

13.01.2022 Cravings in pregnancy... did you experience these? You think of cravings and there will always be some quip about being pregnant. Pregnancy brings about an array of hormonal and physical morphosis, and with some it affects our relationship with food, and this relationship is a curious one. It can range from food aversions, to craving certain types of food (sweet, salty, meaty, dairy etc), unusual combinations (let’s go the pickles and ice cream here); to pica which is an extr...eme form of pregnancy craving which is generally non-nutritional and can be anything from crunching ice to eating dirt or sand... I kid you not! With my last pregnancy I used to have a 5kg bag of ice in the freezer as the last few weeks this was my thing. 11.01.2022 Good question! Listen to this!

11.01.2022 The research says it all. Home birth is a viable option, so why is this option not readily accessible and made affordable to all childbearing women. Intrapartum care is the only part of maternity care not covered by Medicare. This had me scratching my head when I began my motherhood journey too; one of the many reasons I became a midwife. If you want to get active link in with Maternity Consumer Network and Maternity Choices Australia to see how you as a consumer can change your birth choices.

10.01.2022 In honour of the masculine.... I love dad because he’s kind, caring and always has our backs

09.01.2022 I'll never look at cabbage the same way again. First thing I saw in that pic was a head crowning... who else saw that, or is that just the midwife in me seeing everything as birth related? Either way, what an amazing visual and an upgrade to the standard lotus flower visual. Visualisation is an amazing tool and one that is taught when preparing for a positive birth. Visualisation has been proven by research to be an effective tool that even athletes use to help achieve their... goals in their game. How does it work? When we create images in our brains, the neurons in our brain (the electrical transmission signals) interpret the image as an equivalent to a real life action (NB: our mind cannot discern what is real and what is imaginary), in other words when we visualise doing or achieving something, the brain actually tells our brain neurons to perform the movement. This creates a new neural pathway and our body responds to act in a way consistent to what we imagined, all without performing the actual activity... How awesome is that! If you want to know more about this technique and the other tools that are used to create your positive birth click here https://mesmerisedmamas.wixsite.com/website/online-classes Cabbage pic used with permission by Thea de Lore.

08.01.2022 POO TALK Do you know what to expect with your babe's first nappy. Here's a quick shortcut guide on those first lot of poos. This is also a good indicator of what is going in. Many breastfeeding mamas are always so worried about how much their babies are taking in, this is also a good indicator of the way mum's breastmilk is transitioning too. MECONIUM - Birth - D2-3 - thick sticky, a bit like vegemite. TRANSITIONAL - D2-4/5 - greenish/brownish, less sticky.... MATURED - D5 onwards - yellow/mustard can be watery or look like it has seeds/curds. What is not normal is red, white or black stools after this point. If this is what you see in your nappy, please consult your health care provider. Any questions? # babypoo #newborn #baby #newparents #childbirtheducation

02.01.2022 IMPORTANT INFORMATION! When deciding on place of birth, home birth is often not the first option, but for low risk pregnancies, home birth is worth considering. Check out this great clip by Melanie The Midwife outlining a large population study on safety of home birth. Many are dissuaded from this options from partners/birth support, family, friends because of their own fear based biases. Knowledge is power - one of the key ingredients in the recipe for a positive birth. And ...no matter your choice of place or birth, careprovider, type of birth... base your decisions on knowledge and not fear. https://youtu.be/y2whaevIhGI #homebirth #hospitalbirth #empoweredbirth

01.01.2022 Finally recognition that homebirth is a viable option. Hopefully will see more institutions offering this model or better still Medicare supporting this for private midwifery models https://www.ogmagazine.org.au//3-/homebirth-in-australia/
