22.01.2022 26 letters of the alphabet represent all of our speech sounds. Learning to read and spell is hard and is made truly difficult for some because often our childr...en are not given systematic access to the alphabet code. A scope and sequence that works from initial sounds that children use to build CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words like cat, dog. Moving on to longer decodable words and beyond develops the skills of blending, segmenting, and sounds manipulation. Letters don't make sounds- we do. Work from speech to print. Discuss letters as representations of sound. I love how Diane McGuinness calls the symbols sound pictures. Discuss words and their meaning to build a strong vocabulary and comprehension skills. I would love you to ask questions in the comments or DM me if you want to know more about why a systematic plan is crucial for effective literacy instruction. See more

03.01.2022 What is cumulative reading instruction? How does it help dyslexic kids and all struggling readers? Cumulative reading instruction ensures: 1. Step-by-step intr...oduction of letters/sounds 2. Inclusion of previous learning at every new stage 3. Practice and consolidation so that learning is not lost Here are the Dandelion Launcher series of decodable books for beginner readers. They introduce letter sounds in step-by-step progression. Starting with only 5 sounds: s, a ,t, i, m! Every new level will include the sounds and letters introduced in previous levels. See graphic below. UK editions https://www.phonicbooks.co.uk//beginn/dandelion-launchers/ USA editions Note that the USA editions have only 2 books at each stage. https://www.phonicbooks.com//dandelion-launchers-stages-1/ #booksfordyslexickids #booksforstrugglingreaders #phonics
