22.01.2022 Well, here we go. I've just started building a fantastic new 5 bedroom home for my lovely clients John and Lee O'Malley at 50 Henzell Street, Dicky Beach. Watch... the progress of the house construction and learn what is entailed in a quality, strong home. A home for all occasions, not just the lovely sunny BBQ days we tend to have in Queensland but also the dramatic and unexpected days we can all suffer like the poor unfortunate people who are going through all the bushfires in Australia at the moment. Hopefully I have designed a home for all unforeseen circumstances, like the bushfires, earthquakes and particularly cyclones like we tend to have in Qld. Firstly, as you all know, you build your home from the ground up, but in this case I prefer to build my homes on rock. So we put about 100 piers below the footings that go down to the rock below the ground. Why do you do this you may wonder. Well, because Australia is a country of flooding rains and massive drought, the ground beneath the home tends to expand and contract that can affect the slab, particularly if there is a lot of clay present, so if you put the footings on rock, the movement won't affect the concrete slab or footings. If your slab moves with the ground movement, you may have problems with doors and windows being hard to open and close and you may end up being locked in or house because of jammed doors. The next very important thing you should do is to put plenty of steel reinforcement and concrete in your slab and footings. I find that it only costs about a few thousand dollars extra to ensure you have great footings, not just good footings that only just work structurally. Look at it this way, I would rather spend a bit more money on the footings and forgo the gold taps because if the footing are designed to save buckets of money (designed to a really tight budget) and fail because of all this unprecedented weather we seem to be having, then the gold taps will probably tarnish too.
