25.01.2022 Some exciting news..
25.01.2022 Council, in collaboration with the local Police, NPWS and Crown Lands, will be taking targeted action over the coming weeks to address the issues of illegal c...amping, van packers and opportunistic itinerants residing in the area at the southern end of South Beach Road, Brunswick Heads a situation which has been exacerbated by the impacts of COVID 19, relaxation of public health orders enabling regional travel and more recently by the mooted changes to state border controls and school holidays. Council acknowledges the impacts this is having on the local community, surrounding amenities and the environment. But it is a complex problem. For many months we have been working on longer-term solutions to address the diverse needs of the people illegally camping and we now have an action plan in place with local Police, NPWS and Crown Lands for those most in need. Our aim is to link people experiencing homelessness, including those sleeping rough with access to State-provided accommodation and specialist support services, and to move on those who should not be illegally camping and can leave to holiday or reside in another place. Council’s Enforcement team patrols the Brunswick Heads area daily and our two Public Space Liaison Officers work also in the field to assist those most in need to access emergency accommodation through State agencies. Rubbish removal services have also been increased, starting today, to address the issue of overflowing rubbish bins in the area.
23.01.2022 I have real problems with the argument that goes if you’re not doing anything wrong you’ve nothing to fear. How do you define what is wrong? Because the law says so? So law is absolute? What happens when the law changes to something heinous but the punishment and enforcement remains? How do you resist? There has to be a level of inherent protection from the state for individuals, a set of absolute freedoms that cannot be legislated out. There has been a systematic erosion... of our civil liberties over the last decade and longer, detention without charge, terrorism powers etc. and this move to a cashless economy forcing us to use and pay for the banking system seems another underhanded assault with a dark motivation underpinning it. If you want to hit the black market economy and criminal empires, how about starting with drug law reform and switching government expenditure from policing, to education and health care. Everyone will benefit from that, apart from the criminals who exploit the vulnerable and the politicians who take their bribes.
22.01.2022 A great article about our sorry excuse for a prime minister.
21.01.2022 Great to hear that Council has improved in 37 out of 39 areas of business since the last survey. Still lots to do especially on roads but good things are coming here too...
21.01.2022 You'll be putting up with us all for just a little bit longer, the government has signalled its intention formally that Local Government elections will now take place in September 2021. All sitting mayors and councillors remain in office. The next term will be for three years until September 2024.
18.01.2022 Recent criticism of Council's move to regulate Short-Term Holiday Letting deserves a response...because our community desperately needs a return of properties to the long-term market.
17.01.2022 Good on you Bob
14.01.2022 Attention: Community Organisations delivering services to people in the Byron Shire and the broader region. This survey will be used to understand the most important issues facing local community services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
14.01.2022 Good relationships with the State Government have helped bring much needed infrastructure to the shire
12.01.2022 Great news if you work in the Byron Arts and Industry estate, you will soon be able to lunch in a bit of green space! Council is welcoming public submissions until 16 September. Staff will also be on-site at the location of the new park in Bayshore Drive tomorrow, Wednesday 9 September from 9:30am 12:30pm to get people’s ideas and feedback.
12.01.2022 So, I have an announcement to make. After 8 years of dedicated service to the Greens party I have given notice to my local group that I do not intend to renew my Greens membership at this time. There was a concerted, and successful, attempt to oust me at the last preselection such that I do not feature on the next Greens ticket for the Local Government elections next year. I won't go into the sordid details of that here, but I will say that my desire and commitment to serve m...y community trumps my loyalty to the local Greens group and therefore I will be an Independent from now on and will stand as an Independent at the next Council elections. Please get in touch if you want or need further details and I will explain the ins and outs. Rest assured that I will always be a Green at heart, making decisions in line with the four pillars of the Greens but always focused on getting the best outcomes for our community.
11.01.2022 Reports that Byron town centre is still bustling of an evening and our beaches still packed have Councillors seriously concerned and we are discussing today what actions to take. There is extra support for businesses from the Federal government announced yesterday which will hopefully allow them to get through as the economy shuts down. I don’t see what choice we have in a town with so many visitors but to try reinforce the strict restrictions that have been announced by State and Federal Governments and keep people isolated, close beaches etc.
10.01.2022 Just received new binoculars in the post today too..
06.01.2022 Bizarre times at Council today as a somewhat perturbed John Anderson, aka Fastbucks refused to leave the chamber after public access ended and councillors sought to resume proceedings following a short break. Though Meetings remain closed to the public due to COVID-19, Bucks would only go if we passed a motion asking him to leave. Which we duly did of course. The irony of someone so needing to be relevant contributing so little to public debate is a very sad spectacle, as an...yone who catches his ‘ad’ in the Echo this week will observe. It begs the question of not just how relevant the Echo editor is to public debate, given his attack dog alliance with Fastbucks, but also the amount of discount that bucks receives when he places these ads. I asked Mr Anderson that today, to which he replied only that he pays them in cash. Our community needs and deserves a better, more informed discourse around local issues than we are currently receiving.
05.01.2022 An interesting approach from the British
03.01.2022 That extra $60billion coming in handy
02.01.2022 The Greens held out and achieved a Carbon Tax under Julia Gillard, which was later repealed by Tony Abbott. Should we have voted for the Trading Scheme under Rudd/Turnbull?
