24.01.2022 Seeing building elements come together successfully is always a great joy...and always requires a great team (thanks @rowlerconstruction and @joferguson.gardens and Ipsum Structures). This north terrace shot of Flinder Addition shows the merging of building and landscape: large glazed doors with efficient window shading over, crisp roofing, recycled brick retaining walls topped with the recycled terracotta pipes the owners had reclaimed themselves (buffering the wind). Locate...d on Boon Wurrung Country. #melbournearchitects #melbournelandscape #mma_flinders

23.01.2022 A simple, rational design for a new home informed by the gently sloping site, this is the approach view of Merricks House. Some new captures by @tatjanaplitt to come soon. Built by @cvs_constructions_pty_ltd... #melbournearchitects #timbercladding #morningtonpeninsula

20.01.2022 Approaching the finish on our Brunswick House project. The joinery has just gone in and we're so close to handing this back to the owners to enjoy. Thanks @crispgreenhomes for piloting through some turbulance and @evolve_interiors for the joinery. #melbournearchitects #melbourneinteriors #mma_brunswick

20.01.2022 Reflecting further on work completed over the last five years in business. Hawthorn Villa. Started in 2016, completed 2018. Working with a typical brick veneer home to give it a new lease of life, set in amongst two new beautiful garden spaces. Nice to hear from the owners recently that the old garage we converted in a kids cabin has come into its own lately with learning from home. #melbournearchitects... #melbourneinteriors See more

20.01.2022 A new one - Docker Homestead. This is a restoration bringing out the best of the existing features of a brick bungalow 250km from Melbourne. Super delapidated originally but with a solid plan needing little change, this small project involved designing core interior aspects and advising on external finishes. The joy is in the use of simple materials with detailed resolution.... I'm been trying leaner ways of working and learning from them. This project was designed bit by bit, as the clients were renovating. I didn't see the site until completion. No 3d model was needed. From a time and cost perspective, it was really efficient for a small project where the client is comfortable directly working with a builder. I'm proud of how it turned out. 19.01.2022 More of our Brunswick House nearing its final rest state. Not long now til it becomes the first memories of home for a little one. Feeling a strong sense of responsibility! @dan_dfpc Built by @crispgreenhomes... #melbournearchitects #melbourneinteriors #mma_brunswick

17.01.2022 Docker Homestead is now up on my website. A neat small project that turned out really well. This went from design to completion in a flash. Thanks for the owners for their trust.... www.michaelmcmanus.com.au @dan_dfpc #melbournearchitects #melbournerenovations #kingvalley #mma_docker

14.01.2022 Bathroom up - Saturn II laundry and powder A kind of bathroom... a laundry and powder room that work together to bring in natural light across the space, with the trough also acting as the hand basin (reducing costs). Neat white laminate cabinetry and benchtops, some timber details and a full height door to link the spaces make it ace yet affordable.... @tatjanaplitt Built by @prolifica.building #melbournearchitects #melbourneinteriors

14.01.2022 Bathroom up - Details of Merricks House bathroom Red travertine both lines the walls and creates the vanity surface. Wicker panel doors reference the past. A bath separate from the shower enjoys its own views.... vanity @tatjanaplitt bath @ameliastanwix Built by @cvs_constructions_pty_ltd #melbournearchitects #melbourneinteriors #mma_merricks

13.01.2022 Reflecting on work completed over the last five years in business. Saturn II (can't wait for the Saturn V interpretation). Keeping it simple...can sometimes be best, as well as heaps more affordable. A new rear extension that frees it owners from a long and narrow experience in a semi-attached terrace.@tatjanaplitt #melbournerenovations... #melbournearchitects See more

12.01.2022 Reflecting on work completed over the last five years in business. Today, the St Kilda House. Started in 2015, completed 2017. A well-resourced 120sqm home, for clients with an affinity for colour. @gretajeane and @nikoleramsay #melbournearchitects... #australianarchitects #melbourneinteriors See more

12.01.2022 The west side of Flinders House is robust and designed to shield against the harsh sun and create two weather-protected patios for the bedrooms at each end. Being partly bunkered into the earth creates an interesting scale when driving past (the driveway is still being finished). The low window provides bath views. The diagram is from concept stage, now tweaked to feature a sweet curved north facing patio. Looking forward to sharing more. Located on Boon Wurrung country... #melbournearchitects #mma_flinders #morningtonpeninsula

12.01.2022 Bathroom up - Hawthorn Villa bathroom Most bathrooms are open plan. This one's a bit different. Separate zones for laundry, shower, vanity and WC allow more things to comfortably happen at once. Being frequently visible at the end of a corridor (can kids close doors?), the vanity conceals views of any mess and the low wall behind it allows morning light over the top.... @tatjanaplitt Built by @frame_works_melbourne Joinery by @innerwestjoinery #melbournearchitects #melbourneinteriors

11.01.2022 Bathroom up - Merricks House bathroom Bathrooms are the icing on the cake - a small part of the value we provide in designing housing that is conscious of its relationships with experience, the environment and cost. But - they do require lots of attention in design. Beyond the palette, there are heaps of considerations in the background that make smaller spaces work effortlessly and ergonomically.... I don't frequently post bathroom photos for these reasons, but over the next few posts I'm going to share some past spaces I've designed and describe their nuances. @tatjanaplitt Built by @cvs_constructions_pty_ltd

11.01.2022 Extra photos and info of our Maribyrnong Mods project is now live on our website michaelmcmanus.com.au A sweet project.... ...never promise to getting it up in a week... Thanks @dan_dfpc for capturing it. #melbournearchitects #melbournerenovation #mma_maribyrnong

11.01.2022 Launching my studio's new name and identity: Michael McManus Architects. After 5 solid years of business, the new name better reflects my direct input and personal commitment to each project. Working on the smaller side of the architecture spectrum, I've loved the personal relationships formed, hands-on nature required, challenge and the built outcomes which have become so valued. Special thanks to all the great clients who have trusted me with their homes.... New website is live. michaelmcmanus.com.au Identity and webdesign by @grafik.nz

10.01.2022 Reflecting on work completed over the last five years in business. Kew Villa. Started in 2016, completed 2018. An exercise in creating a calm space for a family to personalise, balanced with ample storage tucked away. Always amazing to think back to how the old space was at that first visit and how much has been achieved. @emily_bartlett_photography... #melbournearchitects #melbournearchitecture #melbourneinteriors

08.01.2022 Last year presented the opportunity to upskill and become a Certified Passivhaus Designer. Vielen Dank Germany! In our search to enhance the sustainability and resilience of building we design, we're adding Passivhäuser to the mix. Amidst the context of bushfire smoke and climate crisis, the need to adapt is critical. It's a win-win, as it will benefit our thinking behind non Passivhaus projects as well. If you're wondering why people keep mentioning Passivhaus - as an eviden...ce based building certification, Passivhaus building enjoy year round thermal comfort with low heating and cooling needs. Importantly, the buildings are tested while in construction and at completion, so it isn't just an academic certification, but one with certainty of performance. #passivhausaustralia #melbournearchitects #architectsdeclare_au

06.01.2022 Great to hear the Maribyrnong Mods owners are enjoying the comforts this time around, after going through construction last time. New joinery to organise the background and frame the foreground. The corner unit elegantly handles vinyl and player, fireplace, wood storage and tv, whilst the couch orients towards the view.... 05.01.2022 Planning application approved - coordinating the construction details of this Coburg renovation at the moment. The precise set of docs will guide the project through to completion in the months ahead. Easy for the weeks to roll into the next at the moment, but habr to celebrate the small wins!... #melbournearchitects #melbournerenovations

05.01.2022 The current Home Beautiful magazine features Merricks House and its owners Alex (of @kipandco) and Bobby. Really enjoyable to revisit the personal materials selected in this project and reflect on the significance of home in our life journey.

05.01.2022 The last of the five in five years. Merricks House. Started 2017, completed 2019. A new home on a gorgeous site. Respecting the topography and approach and designing a simple structure that worked naturally with it turned out well.@ameliastanwix... #morningtonpeninsula #melbournearchitects #melbournearchitecture

03.01.2022 Yep, as scales go, I'm a small small business located in this concrete centre. I surround myself personally and professionally with construction, so our collective sustainability is front of mind. Yep, this year my business has gone carbon neutral. It's not difficult or perfect, but it is a starting point. Hoping to inspire other businesses I engage with to do the same. Hot tip - best way to reduce your emissions is to get on 100% Greenpower! Thanks to @architectsdeclare_a...u for empowering me. Builders, check out @buildersdeclare_au #architectsdeclare_au

02.01.2022 Brunswick House is complete and being handed over this week. Its a special moment for its owners, builder and myself. After a thorough assessment to ensure it meets all of our expectations, I'm enjoying stepping back and realising what we've accomplished. A 5m wide block. 182 sqm site. Two storeys, three bedrooms, neighbourly respect, preserving streetscape, recessive, light, views, volume, colour, storage, two gardens and clear roof for solar panels to come. Covid lockdowns.... Looking forward to seeing it serve its owners comfortably. Built lovingly by @crispgreenhomes #architecturevictoria #melbournearchitects #melbourneinteriors #mma_brunswick

01.01.2022 Stoked to capture our Flinders Addition project recently. Thanks @tatjanaplitt Flinders Addition is a new wing to an existing house, providing two boys moving into adulthood some welcome space to call their own. Designed for a family passionate about landscape, the addition shapes the outdoors as much as it does it's interior. More info and photos are up on our website.... After a bit off time social media (Fi and I had a baby boy, Emil), it's exciting to share what we've otherwise been up to. Located on Boon Wurrung Country. 01.01.2022 External works (in construction) enlivening this old AV Jennings home in Maribyrnong for someone dear. Great to see a series of affordable smaller elements making a big impact on the use and enjoyment of this home. Built by Buller Builds. #melbournearchitects
