18.01.2022 "Children with ADHD, particularly those in elementary school, are managing symptoms of difficulty shifting their attention, sustaining focus on less-engaging material, and motor hyperactivity. They often have difficulty with organization and planning, working memory, and impulse control. Even with effective medication management, they typically are dependent on external cues and support to manage the demands of school."

18.01.2022 I'm quoting the opening paragraph from the link. "Women with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are one-third less likely to be diagnosed than men, even though the disorder is equally prevalent between the sexes and causes more impaired function in women, according to a study presented at the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) 34th Annual Conference, held online from September 30 to October 4, 2020. Women with ADHD show a significantly higher risk of comorbid anxiety and mood disorders, including severe depression and suicidal ideation, compared with men, reported the study author Brynne Calleran, PMHN/RN-BC, at New York-Presbyterian/Westchester, White Plains, NY. Delaying ADHD diagnosis can lead to dangerously poorer outcomes in women."

14.01.2022 TIPS FOR PARENTS: Fit your oxygen mask first Parenting is challenging, particularly when a child has ADHD and a specialised set of skills is ...required. It is vital for parents to take care of themselves as they take care of their children. Having a child with ADHD puts a strain on parents relationships, so take care of your relationship as well. 14.01.2022 Dr Russell Barkley's thoughts on the problem whereby the symptoms listing in the DSM do not reflect adult ADHD "The ADHD symptoms listed in the DSM were developed for children. We can see this in the phrasing of certain symptoms, such as can’t play quietly or driven by a motor in the hyperactive/impulsive items. These phrasings don’t translate well to the adult experience. Few adults with ADHD would use these terms to describe their daily experience with the condition, leaving clinicians to extrapolate these items into clinical practice with adults."

14.01.2022 ADHD & MEDICATION Studies have shown that there is often a delay of 24 years from diagnosing ADHD to commencing medication, as parents prefer to try all possib...le alternative approaches before using medication. The media tend to portray quite the opposite, where they suggest that parents insist on medicating their children, which is seldom the case. Medicating your child does not mean you have failed as a parent. It is encouraging that effective medication is available, along with home and school support, to manage your child with ADHD. However, remember: Pills dont teach you skills! Its important to have in mind that medication may reduce symptoms, which will help with better functioning, but it is not a cure for ADHD. Desiree

10.01.2022 "Can You Get ADHD as an Adult? The short answer is, no, adults don't suddenly get ADHD. In order to meet the criteria for an ADHD diagnosis, several symptoms that cause impairment must be present in childhood. Specifically, signs of ADHD need to be evident before age 12 This means, technically, ADHD does not develop in adulthood. In other words, if you have ADHD as an adult, you also had it as a child. As a result, someone may not be diagnosed with the disorder until later i...n life. Conversely, if you definitely did not present with these symptoms as a child, then your current symptoms may be the result of something else, such as depression, anxiety, or another mood disorder. "

08.01.2022 Recently there have been more and more articles about ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder. The two conditions share many behaviours and there has been plenty of research to identify the differences, the similarities as well as commonalities. "While the primary components of ADHD and ASD are different, some overlap exists between the two. The trick to differentiating between them is to determine the reason behind the behavior. For example, both can cause social challenges.... For children with ADHD, the root causes may include inattention and inability to organize their thoughts, or impulsivity. For autistic children, the reasons are often different such as not understanding nonverbal communication or delays in language skills."

08.01.2022 "We know from decades of research that meditation can have a positive effect on a variety of cognitive skills related to ADHD including attention, reaction time, and memory."

07.01.2022 Attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is classified as a childhood onset neurodevelopmental disorder defined by the presence of a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivityimpulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. ADHD is commonly accompanied by other psychiatric and behavioural disorders, notably conduct disorder as well as developmental conditions (e.g. dyslexia, autism), tic disorders, depression and anxiety. With a prevalence of over 5%, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most frequent disorders within child and adolescent psychiatry. https://www.medicalacademic.co.za/post-summary/

07.01.2022 I love the 2nd tip ... "Keep a sense of humor! If you let it be, ADD can be really funny at times. Don’t miss out on the chance to laugh when the laugh is there. At that psychological branch point we all know so well, when the split-second options are to get mad, cry, or laugh, go for the laughter. Humor is a key to a happy life with ADD."
