24.01.2022 I know I had seen this stag at least a couple of times in the area but he always managed to give me the slip. This time I changed my approach - I thought I might try my luck from a further distance and angle as he was to quick to bust me on my previous attempts. I set myself up on a log at about 200 odd metres, made myself a little bird nest with my jacket and waited to see if something would present. After a little nanna nap in the sun whilst binoculars in hand I litera...lly woke up to see him and 2 hinds working their way across the hillside. The Blaser 300win mag put him to sleep at 221m. . 23.01.2022 This has happened to me a few times now! Put a pill through this spiker here and he decided to run his final dash through some scrub before taking a decent tumble. His head piece was lost either falling off on impact (don’t laugh because it happened before lol) or snapped of as he was crashing through and took his tumble. Either way couldn’t find them. 20.01.2022 Perfect meat animal just in time to get one more sausage smoke in this winter. I tried 50mm casings this season as last year I felt 38mm reduced a little to much and I was left with sausages that ended up a little to dry. This season - After a course of smoking over several days the sausages air dried for a further 2-3 weeks. So good def using same system again! 20.01.2022 What a way to spend the long weekend!

20.01.2022 Our client was Beau this weekend, he was driven to book a guided hunt with Mick to learn more so - how to understand the nature of the Victorian Sambar deer and how to track and hunt them. After a couple of stalks with plenty of sign, yet no opportunities for a shot, the itch to line up a brown beast was growing with every stealthy step . Finally on the second day Mick was able to spot a trophy stag from roughly 50-60 metres away, tucked away in some semi thick scrub - the ...stag was in no hurry! Beau lined him up with his 7mm and the bullet took flight. From what we know - the bullet hit. By Micks account the 26 incher slinked away either with a graze wound or possibly a shot more lethal. THE SEARCH WAS ON! . After hours of patient searching the big boy could unfortunately not be located! This is all part and parcel! It would be a lie if a distinguished hunter said that he has not encountered a similar experience hunting Sambar. The resilience and sheer toughness of these animals never ceases to amaze even the most experienced. We definitely don’t like seeing opportunities like that slip nor do we enjoy seeing animals injured and getting away, but unfortunately that’s the way the cookie crumbles sometimes . In summary the weekend was not fruitless. With multiple deer spotted and a higher understanding of reading sign Beau took away everlasting knowledge from Mick and an even greater hunger to put his new knowledge into practice to reap the ultimate reward . Mick really knows the area well showing me great sign that was so fresh you would think the animal had just left especially the wallows and rubs. I had the opportunity to take a young spikey at roughly 50 mts, the animal has no idea we were onto him but opted not too take him so he had a chance to grow. We saw and got seen by other animals but no chance to pull the tri...gger. Although no meat in the freezer the new friendship that has been developed between two old blokes is worth more. You may even bump deer along your way stalking but are never quite able to get the shot off because the terrain is just simply too thick? . 04.01.2022 Michael @mickydee_bruv contacted Sambar Science having some previous hunting knowledge, however was yet to have ever set out on a mission to hunt the elusive Sambar deer . Michael embarked on a solo road trip down to the North East of Victoria from NSW where he met up with Mick (Samabar Science guide) on Friday evening and plans were made for the following 2 days and what they would entail. Sambar Science operates with a completely hands on approach - at first sunrise Mic...hael and Mick headed off on their mission to target a Sambar stag with substantial headgear. By 7.30am the first morning, a Spikey was on the deck! With early jitters out of the way the focus of the entire 2 days remaining was an upgrade to a Stag . Mick was able to guide Michael and offer close encounters on Sambar on several occasions, however patience now became the ultimate tactic! Michael was not only able to witness close encounters but was able to learn everything needed from - reading deer sign, likely bedding areas, daily Sambar movements, so that next time he would establish the confidence on a solo hunt .
