25.01.2022 There are many colorful fungi that occur both worldwide and all year round. Here is one commonly found on dead wood.

24.01.2022 Mucormycosis (black fungus) is an infection in patients with COVID, or who are recovering from COVID, and which is more common in India than in other countries. Mucormycosis is caused by the many fungi in the order Mucorales, which are usually found in the environment and often associated with decaying organic material such as fruit and vegetables. 04.01.2022 Archaea are microbes best known for living in extreme environments, such as deep-ocean vents and acid lakes. They might also hold the key to understanding how complex life evolved on Earth. Many scientists suspect that an ancient archaeon gave rise to the group of organisms known as eukaryotes, which include amoebae, mushrooms, plants and people - although it’s also possible that both eukaryotes and archaea arose from some more distant common ancestor. 04.01.2022 Spinifex plants grow in rings because as the plant gets older, the centre dies off while the outside continues to expand. Scientists have been trying to find out causes this strange pattern. New research suggests microbes in the centre impact the growth of new seedlings and thus prevent their recruitment to the inside of the ring. (3 min read)
