25.01.2022 1080 BAITS AROUND 1080 is a highly toxic pesticide used to kill pests such as wild dogs, foxes, feral pigs etc. 1080 is very appetizing for dogs but can have a horrific impact. State Forests, National Parks and local landholders often run 1080 baiting programs. Baiting programs require neighbours to be notified and signage displayed. If there is baiting in your area, be vigilant when walking your dog and ensure your dog isn't wandering off your property. Be aware that ba...its can also be moved from their original location by birds and other animals. Clinical signs of 1080 poisoning usually show within half an hour, but can take more than 6 hours to manifest. Initial symptoms include vomiting, anxiety and shaking. These then develop into frenzied behaviour with running and yelping fits, uncontrolled paddling and seizures, followed by collapse and eventually death. The highly fatal nature of this poison and the lack of an antidote means that you need to contact your closest veterinary clinic as soon as possible if you suspect your dog has eaten 1080. For more information on 1080 and your dog, go to https://animalpoisons.com.au/news/1080-and-your-dog

25.01.2022 FURRY FRIEND? Does your furry friend have their own furry friend? Aria loves greeting her owners when they come home with her toy parrot. ... Post your photos below of your pet with their furry friend

24.01.2022 TOUGH BABYDOLL Meet baby Walter a 2 month old Babydoll sheep (also known as an Olde English Southdown sheep). His very dedicated owners noticed he was having trouble walking and went searching for a tick. Miraculously they found one right on his chin! Not an easy task with very thick wooly coat. Walter continued to go downhill so he was brought into our Macksville clinic. We put a catheter in his leg and gave him a tick serum and then clipped off his wooly coat to make sure... he didn’t have any more ticks. Poor little Walter had a very rough day where he couldn’t swallow or breath very well. But he proved to be very tough turning the corner in the afternoon and to our relief the next morning took to the bottle with gusto! Walter has gone home to be with his mum and the rest of the flock and although he will take a few more days to fully recover he is well on the path to being a very handsome stud ram!

24.01.2022 DON'T BE FOOLED BY THAT SAD FACE! This is Pippa! She has been coming to Macksville Vets on and off for the last 6 years (after completing puppy pre school). She has always had a HAPPY AND POSITIVE experience at the clinic and has been well socalised. Your pet's feelings about the vet clinic can have a huge impact on how they cope when they need to be treated. So a few weeks ago Pippa was in a terrible accident which resulted in her needing a plate placed in her foot. The on...going care required weekly re-checks and bandage changes at the clinic for Pippa. But thanks to Pippa's upbringing and her happy vet visits she managed these weekly visits and bandage changes without any dramas or stress. Teaching your dog that the vet clinic isn't a scary place is very important for them. Its like teaching your kids that the doctor or hospital is not a scary place. We encourage you to bring them to meet up with our wonderful nurses at reception who will make a fuss and give them a treat and a pat. Your dog will begin to realise that the vet clinic is also a place where good things happen and its not so 'scary'.

24.01.2022 PUPPY MANIA Its puppies galore in our clinics at the moment. Here is the bulldog puppy page. Two little French Bulldogs pups just born via caesarian thanks to Dr Kim and very keen for some food. And a bucket load of 7 Miniature Australian Bulldogs with mum Nala making sure they are all ok. Just too much cuteness!!

23.01.2022 BEWARE PUPPY SCAMS If you are looking for a puppy online, be aware of the puppy scams currently operating. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Scamwatch, says this year there have been over 2,000 puppy scams reported which has resulted in buyers losing over $700,000. With more people searching online for puppies due to the COVID pandemic, scammers have set up fake websites and online advertisements. These scam websites can be very professional and very convi...ncing and are pretending to sell sought-after dog breeds. The scammers ask for upfront deposits and take advantage of the fact that you can't travel to meet the puppy due to travel restrictions. Some then continue to find new ways to ask for more money using the pandemic to claim things like higher transportation costs to get across interstate borders, or additional fees for 'coronavirus treatments'. Once buyers make their payment the seller ceases all contact. The most common breeds caught up in these scams are the highly sort after Cavoodles and French Bulldogs If you are looking to buy a puppy the best option is to seek out reputable breeders and pet adoption organisations and buy or adopt a pet you can meet in person.

17.01.2022 MY PET IS DRINKING MORE If your pet is suddenly drinking more it could indicate an underlying medical condition. If there is no obvious reason for the increase in drinking, like warm weather, increased exercise, medications or a change from wet to dry food, then you may need to consult your vet for a check up. Increased thirst can indicate a number of conditions like kidney or liver disease, diabetes, cancer, infection, fever, to name a few. If you are concerned about the amount of water your pet is drinking give us a call and book in for a check up.

16.01.2022 PAST PUPPY PRE SCHOOL GRADUATE Some of you may remember little Daisy from one of our past puppy preschool graduation posts. Well here she is posing for the camera after her desexing. She is so gorgeous. We love seeing our preschool puppies come back time and time again throughout their life for a checkup, vaccination, a treatment or even just to say hello. They get so excited every time they walk through our doors as they remember just how much FUN they had during their 5 weeks training.

15.01.2022 WHAT DOES YOUR DOG SEE? Ever wondered how your dog sees the world? It was previously thought they saw the world in black and white but we now know that they do see colours but not like we do - more like someone who is colour blind. Interestingly they can't see reds and greens, colours often used for dog toys!! Dogs also have more blurry vision than we do. Whilst dogs may not be able to see as clearly as we do, they do have great night vision and a greater sensitivity to detecting motion at a distance. These are all very helpful features for trying to hunt down your prey between dusk and dawn. If you want to learn more have a look here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0_uj_Fglys

05.01.2022 Olive is a 8 month old ferret who recently visited Dr Kristie at our Macksville Clinic for desexing. If you are not planning to breed from your female ferret it is best to have her desexed. The female ferret can remain 'on heat' which causes a number of medical complications, some of which are fatal. Did you know our our staff are very knowledgeable and experienced in handling, diagnosing and treating 'pocket and exotic pets'. If you have any concerns or questions feel free to give us a call and we will advise you if an appointment is recommended or if we can give you the correct information over the phone.
