24.01.2022 Aluminium Radial Bottom Sections to be Used for Olympics The ILCA has confirmed that Aluminium Radial Lower Masts will be used as supplied equipment for the Women’s Single Handed Dinghy event in the Tokyo Olympic Games Sailing Competition. Although the composite lower mast became class legal for competition world wide in the Radial class beginning 1 September 2020, its use may be restricted in some additional events leading up to the delayed Olympic games in Tokyo (currently ...scheduled for 2021). ILCA says that the race documents for the remaining Olympic qualification events (Europe and Asia) will be amended to only allow use of the aluminium Radial Lower Mast. Note that an announcement of the dates and locations of the Olympic qualification events is expected soon and ILCA will pass along that information as soon as it becomes available.

17.01.2022 Hiking hard takes practice and getting used to being in a maxed out position. It's hard to breath, hard to see, difficult to control sheeting and steering. ISA ...coaches specialize in making adjustments to your strap, muscle engagement and distance outboard to optimize hiking leverage. Pro tip: do some small sprints in max hike to get used to the feeling. 17.01.2022 Hi I’m Kurt Sims and I sail a Laser Dinghy at Middle Harbour Amateur Sailing Club (MHASC). I’ve been sailing dinghies in and around Sydney, on and off over the years, ever since I was a kid. As life happens, I’ve taken breaks from sailing. More recently I found myself looking to get back into active sailing - partly because of my lifelong passion for sailing, and equally because I wanted to lift my fitness and find a way to get physically moving again after spending way too... long every day sitting at a desk. After 1.5 years back into it, my health has improved across all the key metrics, and the only effort put in was related to improve my sailing. I knew Laser Dinghies were still a major sailing class on the Harbour, and around the World, and the Laser is also a simple boat to rig and maintain, offers a good mental and physical challenge to sail well, and a great one-design competition. It doesn’t take a large chunk of your day to get out on the water which is critical in the busy world we live in. I decided to give the Laser a go locally at MHASC - which is a dedicated Laser Sailing Club. MHASC has a hard to beat location. It offers great sailing options in the more sheltered Middle Harbour with access to the main harbour. Hard to beat scenery too! MHASC offers a fantastic Club Calendar with competitions year round. The heart of the Club is a lively bunch of active male and female sailors across a wide age group and experience that contribute to a friendly, fun and supportive atmosphere. Many of the members also choose to participate in various District, State, National and World events and we even have a few past and current World Champions here! The best part is that new laser sailors are welcomed and the more experienced sailors are keen to get people up to speed, so there is a good range of abilities. I have found sailing lasers at MHASC the best way to get back into sailing, and to get the physical activity that I was looking for. If you have a passion for sailing, some dinghy sailing experience, and want to do something good for your ‘sailing soul’ I reckon you would be hard pressed to go past Laser Sailing at MHASC. Come down to MHASC and say hi, and have a go on one of our boats. You can get more information on the Club website: www.mhasc.org.au See more

09.01.2022 Court gives $6m verdict in favour of Laser designer in long running dispute by Richard Gladwell/Sail-World.com/nz 16 Feb 14:11 AEDT 16 February 2020 A District Court of Connecticut Jury has handed down a Verdict in favour of Bruce Kirby Inc, the designer of the ILCA Laser singlehander.... The decision was reached on Friday afternoon after seven year's of preliminaries. Only the form stating that the Jury found in favour of the Plaintiff has been posted in the US Courts system. A damages award in excess of $6million is said to have been awarded, however as yet there is no Court document supporting this amount. The action was taken by Bruce Kirby Inc against LaserPerformance Europe (Ltd) , the sole builder of the Laser dinghy in Europe and the dominant manufacturer of the class, until its licence was rescinded by the International Laser Class Association in 2019. The Decision and Award is expected to be Appealed. It is one of two cases running in the US Courts between the two parties. The second is expected to held in front of a Judge only trial. Meanwhile the International Laser Class Association is proceeding with the selection and issuance of new Building Licences, and is working through a short list of Builders around the world. New tooling from master moulds held by the class have been created and sent to the short-listed builders who will have to make their own jigs and then build a sample of ten ILCA Lasers which will be scrutinised by measurers for compliance with the Class Construction Manual before their licence application is approved or declined. It is expected that process will take "a few weeks" after which new ILCA legal Lasers will be able to be supplied under a competitive model without restriction as to territory or prices. The Laser and Laser Radial fleet for the 2020 Olympics has already been built by Performance Sailcraft Japan who has a licence from ILCA and is the owner of the laser trademark for Japan and Korea.
