Have you thought about how great it would be to include your family in your pursuit to exercise more regularly? Family exercise will improve the health of your loved ones, make exercise more fun, and at the same time develop stronger connecti...ons between all of you. All you need to do is set aside 30 - 45 mins three times a week to realise the benefits of regular exercise. Craig has developed a family friendly fitness program for use in your own homes with his online support through the Midlife Fitness internet portal accessible on any electronic device. The program will be modified to suit your family's fitness levels and to incorporate any fitness equipment you have at your disposal such as exercise machines, free weights, stepper, skipping rope etc (if you have a pool you may like to perform your own aquarobics class once a week following Craig's hydrotherapy exercises). While we are on this subject please think about the following; Exercise is often the last thing that people feel like doing when they are experiencing depression. However, regular exercise has been shown to have ...very positive effects upon mental wellbeing. Whilst vigourous exercise releases endorphins (the 'feel good' chemicals that also alleviate pain) into our bloodstream, even gentle to moderate exercise increases serotonin, which has a number of benefits including lifting our mood and helping to counteract insomnia. The good news is that exercise doesn’t need to be strenuous for us to feel some of its many benefits. How does exercise help depression? It increases energy levels, helps to get a good night’s sleep, provides distraction from worries and rumination, increases a sense of control and self-esteem by taking an active role in the individual’s own recovery. Some of the evidence shown for the benefits of exercise in managing depression are; Numerous studies have shown that people who exercise regularly experience fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety than those who do not exercise regularly Several trials have shown that regular exercise of moderate intensity can be an effective treatment by itself for mild to moderate depression Two trials have found that 16 weeks of regular exercise is equally effective as an SSRI antidepressant medication in the treatment of mild to moderate depression in older adults who have been inactive Research also suggests that exercise can further assist depression in individuals with depression who have responded only partially to an antidepressant medication Both aerobic exercise (e.g. brisk walking, cycling or jogging) and resistance or strength training (e.g. weight-lifting) have been found to be beneficial for depression. 02.01.2022 'Online Family Fitness' update - many people have asked me what the online portal looks like and how does it work? In response to this question I have created a 'sample' family fitness program totally FREE for 1 x week showing stretches, strength and cardio exercises (without using any equipment) and for the lucky families with a pool, plenty of hydrotherapy/aqua exercises. If you would like to access this program to find out what it is all about, get your family together and... trial it for a week! All you have to do is send your name and email address to [email protected] and I will send you your own log in and password to use the portal. It will only work for 1 x week, if by then you like what you see and want to sign up for a more personalised program with my online support, this can be set up from just $10 per week.
