16.01.2022 When it comes to making progress on our instrument, we can often be our own worst enemies. Sometimes we adopt practice strategies that seem effective but are ac...tually holding us back. Instead of spending hours practicing the wrong way (and frustrating yourself week after week), try using these more focused methods to save time and achieve faster progress. http://ow.ly/YYnaJ See more

16.01.2022 Just received this lovely msge from mother of gorgeous teenage (15yo) violin student: "X says it's his birthday tomorrow and he's having the day and can't come to lesson". Mike says even his 5yo students turn up for lessons on their birthdays. Mike says X has a professional concert coming up in less than a month and needs to know his piece backwards. Mike reiterates X is on probation with the Albany Chamber Orchestra (appropriately abbreviated to AlCO) and certain people in ...AlCO raised their eyebrows because APPARENTLY student X does whatever X wants re-bowing and other musical markings. Mike says this is X's chance to impress all the people X needs to impress in Albany. Mike says nothing takes priority over preparing for a concert that is but 3 weeks away. Mike says it is one hour of X's life. Mike says: "Tell student X that I will see him at his lesson tomorrow". Mike also says he will bake him a cake and sing happy birthday. (And he will. With genuine affection.) From your loving violin teacher. Ps: Don't you just LOVE them? See more

16.01.2022 Do you know all of the parts of the violin?

15.01.2022 We love this recent blog post from Suzuki violin teacher and Violinist.com founder Laurie Niles: "When it comes to teaching children, there should be no "secre...ts" about how to do it. If you find something that works, use it. If you see someone else doing something that works, use it. And give credit where it's due; acknowledge the sources of your ideas and publicly praise your colleagues for their best ideas." What is your favorite "stolen" teaching idea? Share it, and credit the teacher who shared it with you, in the comments!

14.01.2022 When they examined these participants’ brain images, one pattern in particular stuck out: People who got earworms more often had a thinner right frontal cortex, which is involved in inhibition, and a thinner temporal cortex, which processes sensory stimuli like sound.

14.01.2022 Music is not just for professionals. Don’t ever think that you shouldn’t bother learning an instrument because it won’t be your livelihood. http://bit.ly/1MKlxHq

08.01.2022 The experience of taking lessons, like the experience of participating in mindfulness practices, fundamentally and physically changes the plastic brain, signifi...cantly affecting how well a person interacts with other people and adapts to difficult situations. It is paramount that we be intentional about the experiences we give our children. http://bit.ly/NoDramaDiscipline
