24.01.2022 Today is World Mental Health Day, and it comes at a time when our daily lives have changed considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The past months have brought many challenges: for health-care workers, providing care in difficult circumstances, going to work fearful of bringing COVID-19 home with them; for students, adapting to taking classes from home, with little contact with teachers and friends, and anxious about their futures; for workers whose livelihoods ar...e threatened; for the vast number of people caught in poverty or in fragile humanitarian settings with extremely limited protection from COVID-19; and for people with mental health conditions, many experiencing even greater social isolation than before. And this is to say nothing of managing the grief of losing a loved one, sometimes without being able to say goodbye. We all know this has been a very tough year for so many. 24.01.2022 Our Jimmy’s Block is rapidly gaining a legion of fans Tyson Stelzer being one of the biggest. He had this to say about it: Ignore the playful label and ludicrously low price, this is a monumental wine and one of the greatest yet to emerge from this beloved estate. After 20 years in the ground, it was only a matter of time before Mike singled out his favourite block, egged on by his son and vineyard manager, Jimmy. ... On paper, it’s identical to his famous estate shiraz of the same season, but the wine projects an altogether different and much more serious and polished mood. Grand testimony to the distinctiveness even of blocks within the same vineyard, this label is much closer in style and shape to Mike’s fabled shiraz prior to its evolution to a more approachable style since 2016. And it’s more than this, too. A medium, vibrant purple hue, it’s built around a fantastic and focused singularity of satsuma plum, blackberry and black cherry fruit, confidently supported by the dark chocolate and fine-grained tannins of 12 months maturation in American oak barrels. Vibrant acidity, fabulous fruit and beautifully deployed tannins unite on a finish of profound line and length. 08.01.2022 Mike & I had the pleasure of attending another of Tyson Stelzer’s wonderful wine dinners in Brisbane last night. While it was an equal mix of excitement and apprehension getting on a plane and leaving Adelaide, we are so glad we made the trip and had the chance to try some mind-blowing wines. The Come Taste the Stars dinner really was a once in a lifetime wine experience. ... Here is Tyson talking about the wines he was looking forward to serving: Taittinger Comtes 2008 direct from France (not yet released in Australia), André Clouet Versailles Diamant (also direct, never released), Amour de Deutz 2008 en magnum (direct from the house), the very last bottles of Egly-Ouriet Millésime 2008 in the country, my top Coteaux Champenois of all time (Egly 2015) and two of my favourite premier and grand cru Burgundies (Leflaive and Géantet-Pansiot) just to show how close Coteaux Champenois is coming to the holy grail!
