25.01.2022 A new Pavilion for Proclamation Park! The windowless pavilion at Proclamation Park in Ringwood looks more suited as an old fortification to guard the Port Phillip Heads. Home to the Ringwood Saints Baseball Club and the Womens section of the Ringwood Cricket Club this building is everything a pavilion should not be.... Views and access, female friendly change rooms, accessible toilets and umpires facilities were unfortunately not on the plans when this concrete box was constructed many decades ago. If re-elected to Council, securing funding and constructing a new pavilion and increased parking next year at Proclamation Park will be one of my key priorities as your Jubilee Ward councillor. With huge financial impacts from Covid 19 the Council budget is tight but the need for modern facilities at Proclamation Park is urgent. The new site for the proposed 2 storey pavilion provides great views of both the Baseball diamond and the cricket oval while allowing for more parking on the the old pavilion site, something that is sorely needed every weekend. Vote 1 Mike Symon for a new $3.25m pavilion at Proclamation Park!

22.01.2022 Great news that our local playgrounds can re-open. For both kids and parents this will be a great relief to have children outdoors and having fun

21.01.2022 Once we are over Covid 19 restrictions our new sports pavilion at HE Parker Reserve in Heathmont is ready and waiting to host the Heathmont Cricket Club, the Heathmont Jets Football club and SALT, who have office space upstairs. The building looks fantastic and the view from the balcony is awesome! And the new ground surface and LED lighting are amongst the best for miles around.... Projects like this are usually beyond the scope of Council but with funding from both the Federal and State governments to top up Council's budget for the project our Community wins! Can't wait till we are able to go and watch a game there! .

20.01.2022 Its hard to ever look good in a hair net! But it is worthwhile if you get to have a look at the chocolate bars and other treats are made at Cadbury in Ringwood. One of our biggest local employers in Maroondah and right here in the Jubilee Ward !!

15.01.2022 Sometimes there is nothing better than settling in to read a good book. If that sounds like you then the great news is that Maroondahs Libraries at Realm and Croydon will be re-opening their Click and collect service from Monday 21 September.. The building looks so lonely now, but Im really looking forward to when the Town Square and the inside of Realm once again have people out enjoying themselves again... For more info on the re-opening of Click and collect visit https://www.yourlibrary.com.au/current-services/

12.01.2022 The Local Government election for Maroondah is getting close and election day is the 24th of October. Look out for this and other versions of my double sided cards coming to your letterbox this week!

12.01.2022 One of my roles as a Councillor is to represent Maroondah at Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV). As we are a Local Government and many of the issues in our community are the responsibility of either the Federal or State Governments, the MAV provides Councils across Victoria the platform to speak to other levels of Government as a whole. In the 4 years that I have had the privilege of being Maroondahs MAV Rep we have put motions at every State Council - all of which have... been supported and passed by the sector. We also discuss, debate and often support motions from other Councils that we agree with. Over the next few weeks I will take you through some of the MAV resolutions passed in the last 4 years. A position put by the 79 Councils (that is every Council in Victoria) carries far more weight that a single Council can hope to achieve. Heres the first example:- In October 2019 I moved the Maroondah Council motion regarding Derelict Buildings at the MAV State Council. The motion read:- "That the MAV State Council calls upon the State Government to amend the existing building regulations to provide Councils the necessary power to require the rectification or ultimately demolition of properties that are in a significant state of neglect and dereliction." The motion passed 91 votes to 9 and our sector is still pushing the State to provide Councils with more backing to have the legal power to require the repair of derelict buildings or ultimately have them demolished if no action is taken to fix them up. Why should we residents have to put up with such contempt from recalcitrant owners who simply do not care for our community or the problems that they directly cause?

11.01.2022 Not every issue that come to Council can be resolved at a local level. Very often it is the State government who sets the rules, or in this case, the size of the fines. In May 2019 I went to the MAV State Council with the following Maroondah motion to increase penalties for the illegal removal of trees. "That the MAV advocate to the Victorian Government that appropriate penalties apply to discourage the removal of trees protected by local laws or planning schemes."... The loss of canopy cover and significant vegetation not only impacts on our natural environment but can result in developers getting financial advantage as a result of illegal tree removal. There has been a growing trend both in Maroondah and other municipalities for vegetation to be removed or destroyed without planning permits being sought from Council. The relatively low $2000 fines can easily be absorbed into the cost of doing business and are not a sufficient deterrent. This then leaves Council and community to manage the impacts to its environment. The motion was carried at the MAV May 2019 State Council with 92% of the vote! But we are still waiting for the State to increase the penalty amounts

11.01.2022 The new Jubilee Ward covers part of Ringwood, Heathmont and a small piece of Vermont. Most of these areas are in my current Mullum Ward and some addresses are currently in the Arrabri Ward.

06.01.2022 Maroondah Council elections are coming up in October. This year I am running in the new Jubilee Ward and I am asking for your support to make Maroondah Even Better. Keep an eye out for my brochure with more information that should have already arrived your letterbox!... After serving the residents and ratepayers of the soon to be gone Mullum Ward for the last 4 years the boundaries have now been changed by the State Government. From October we will still have 9 Councillors but instead of 3 to represent each of the 3 Wards that we have now, there will be one Councillor elected to represent each of the 9 new Single member Wards.

04.01.2022 Only 2 days left at the Braeside Avenue office. Really looking forward to the move to Realm!

02.01.2022 Its nearly a year since we opened the Maroondah Nets at HE Parker reserve in Heathmont on the 12th of October with funding from Council and both the Federal and State Governments. Projects like this really show the value of Council working closely with other levels of Government to deliver great results for our Community that we could never achieve by ourselves.

02.01.2022 Did you know that Maroondah's 2 public golf courses cover 198 Acres and make up over 1.3% of Maroondah's total open public space? Keeping our golf courses is not only great for golfers - it is also great for our environment and is one of the main reasons why we have more trees in Maroondah by area than any other Metro Council. To keep both Ringwood and Dorset Golf at 18 holes,... Vote 1 Mike Symon for an even better Maroondah. See more

01.01.2022 As a representative of our community one of things that I really miss is being able to go out and meet the many people who do so much to make Maroondah an even better place to live. My role and position may have changed over the years, and although holding online events is better than not, there is nothing better than recognising those members of our community who selflessly put in the time and commitment to help others. Here's a couple of pics with Cr Tony Dib from Maroondah and Cr Sharon Ellis from Whitehorse at the Deakin 2012 National Volunteers Awards from way back in 2012 held at Maroondah Federation Estate.

01.01.2022 As Maroondahs MAV Rep I took a motion to the May 2018 MAV State Council calling on the Victorian Government to introduce a Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) for the State. Many other Councils also brought similar motions as well. The motion passed with 89% of the vote but Victoria remained the only mainland State not to have a Container Deposit Scheme.... Its hard to believe now but until the start of 2018 Councils were actually paid by the tonne for recyclables collected. However, since China and many other countries have stopped importation of these products the tables have turned and now Maroondah has to pay big $$ to the recyclers for them to take the bottles and cans that go into our recycling bins every fortnight. A CDS puts a value on each can and bottle with refunds paid at collection centres for those who bring them in, while saving your Council money as we have to pay less overall for the recycling of cans and bottles. This February, the State Government announced that they would introduce a CDS - scheduled to start in Feb 2023. Sometimes Advocacy works Until then though, if you have empty bottles or cans recyclables, make sure that they go in the bins that are on our streets and parks or if at home then into the blue lid bin for collection every 2 weeks.
