23.01.2022 There is only one way to look at things, until someone shows us how to look at things with different eyes. Pablo Picasso. We are all doing our part...... reflecting, researching, learning, listening, watching, protesting, conversing, hoping...... I hope that because of this current movement, because of all they have witnessed and what we as parents are hoping to instill in them, that our children will be the game changers. The compassionate, non judgmental, educated, aware &... diverse generation. They wont have to protest and there wont be segregation, because they will see a person as a person, not for the colour of their skin, their education or their mode of mobility or ability. History and current events can often make us feel uncomfortable, it should.... we can stereotype and judge all too easily, I know I have been guilty of it at times. But I am also witness to the daily beauty of diversity in our life. It is fulfilling, interesting and enriching. We need to promise ourselves that we will continue to do better, if not for now, but for the sake of the next generation - because although change takes time, the time is now and our little ones are going to be the evidence of that change. No race but the human race.... #blacklivesmatter #diversity #equality #bethechangeyouwanttosee #educationiskey

22.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will Be. We recognize that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. ... Australia has the World’s oldest oral stories and made the earliest paintings of ceremony. NAIDOC week is about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian History. In Gladstone, QLD, we acknowledge the Byellee, Gooreng Gooreng, Gurang and Teribelang Bunda people who are the traditional custodians of this land. We pay our respect to Elders both past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. 21.01.2022 Movement is a medicine for creating change in a persons physical, emotional & mental state - Carol Welch.... and one of the reasons I always promote and preach #activeplay and the importance of movement in a developing child. This little lady is getting stronger and more confident on her feet and is refining her fine motor skills and dexterity because we are ensuring she has a strong core/foundation. I challenge you to stop and think about how your child is playing and wh...ether they are moving enough or how you can make the task or play more active? #MilestonesMovementChallenge Strengthening their core muscles will allow them to sit and play and use their fine motor skills more proficiently because theyve had an opportunity to regulate their sensory system & long term, strengthen their core. The body might be a little more prepared for quiet or sedentary play after youve allowed them to move #paediatricphysiotherapy #activeplay #importanceofmovement #letthemmovebeforetheysit #heavywork #milestonesmovementchallenge #lowmuscletone #hypotonia #bendyjoints #hypermobility #play #pediatricphysicaltherapy @ Gladstone, Queensland

21.01.2022 We hope that COVID-19 isolation isnt too isolating, that youre embracing how time has slowed down and taking the time to enjoy the little things and hopefully youre children or spouse arent driving you too crazy For some, COVID has brought upon extra stressors like working from home, whilst trying to entertain and teach kids or a huge increase in paperwork and policies and procedures (ahem ). Whatever your circumstance, every situation is different and our co...ping mechanisms are comparative to our experience and how we personally adapt. I often speak of this is mothers groups. Some women can deal with a baby that doesnt sleep well, and yet some fall into despair and seek professional help (this was me). This goes for all situations in life, however sometimes we believe we do not have the right to vent or discuss our concerns or feelings, as someone else is always worse off..... COVID is the same, EVERYONE is hurting in some way, whether that be front line workers fatigue and frustration at people not practicing #physicaldistancing or that casual employee who lost their job, or the working mum who now has to work from home and entertain children, or the therapist changing their entire service model (ahem ), or the Stay at home Mum whos only break for the week was swimming lessons or playgroup & now has to isolate. Were all allowed to feel frustrated and confused and overwhelmed by this situation. #globalpandemic seemed so far fetched and yet here we are.... with no certainty as to when this might end. So talk about it, vent, acknowledge people are hurting, some may be loving the slower pace, but some may not know how to process all these emotions and changes. Support, acknowledge, talk, vent... just dont judge. We are all in this together. If we can help at all by offering a small discount and free delivery, so that you can have a hot coffee whilst the kids are happily playing, then that puts a smile on our face also Stay safe, stay home, practice #physicaldistancing but ensure youre #sociallysupportive Use the coupon code for a discount on products on the website MilestonesPlay5.

18.01.2022 You will teach them to fly, but they will not fly your flight. You will teach them to dream, but they will not dream your dream. You will teach them to live, but they will not live your life. Nevertheless in every flight, in every life, in every dream, the print of the way you taught them will remain. Mother Theresa... I am ever so grateful to be mother to these two gorgeous kids, but I am also lucky enough to support, teach and care for so many other children and mothers at Milestones. Its an incredible privilege and one I am ever so thankful for. Just like at home, at work, I play, bargain, worry, bribe, teach, nurture and at times flounder my way through..... but its always with love and good intentions. I am very thankful to have been accepted and spent the last 8 months learning from... the industry experts. 10.01.2022 Happy Easter/Long weekend to all! I hope youre all enjoying time together making the most of #isolation and all playing our part in flattening the curve. To those that arent coping with isolation, reach out, #wereallinthistogether. I dont know a single person that isnt impacted by COVID-19. Whether it be financially, physically - unable to see family, worked beyond exhaustion on the front line, experiencing feelings of isolation, loneliness, being stuck, unsure, anxious,... bored... so many emotions and so hard to process. Its unprecedented! Focus on the simple things, being together, get outside, enjoy the slower pace, listen to music, dance, be silly, play, get moving, create new routines or for those that can, relax the routines (the kids were still awake at 9:30pm last night whilst camping - for those that know me, know this is a big deal ), let them eat chocolate.... try to bring some kind of new normality into this crazy, unpredictable world Stay home, stay safe and I hope the kids have lots of fun on their Easter egg hunt tomorrow tonights sunset #milestonesphysiotherapy #covid19 #easterinisolation #itsthelittlethings #sunset See more

08.01.2022 World Physiotherapy Day 2020 Today I have reflected on just how lucky I am to be a physio and to have created a space where I can follow my passion. Working with babies, children and women to achieve their goals is a privilege and I am so thankful that you all entrust in me to help. Each day is different, some days its babies and plagiocephaly (misshapen head), some days its gait retraining, some days its equipment prescription or playing with Bubs and educating and nurt...uring Mums in our #MeetingYOURMilestones group, some days its completing assessments and investigations that lead to diagnosis that are confronting & life changing..... other days its vestibular assessment and rehabilitation. I am forever learning and yearning for more, wanting to help, educate, play, nurture and support. Theres not enough hours in the day! I often wake, planning sessions for the day, spend lunch breaks responding to messages about development via social media, people watching and problem solve their gait disturbances or over analyzing how my kids are moving or playing, then lying awake at night worrying about investigations or how I can improve therapy options when progress plateaus. Its a passion, not a job and although at times its exhausting and overwhelming..... I wouldnt change a thing. (Well, maybe more hours in the day or the option of cloning me so I can help more families The good news is..... this wonderful person - Abby Edmistone, has accepted my job offer to join us next year, in a full time position! To say I am excited is an understatement! We will be able to start getting through our waitlist, we will train, educate and work together to create an even better service and space at Milestones. She is passionate, caring, a local CQ girl and will be a wonderful asset to our team. We are growing and learning together and I cannot wait to see what evolves over the next 12months. Thank you to the families and staff that make Milestones such a wonderful place to work. I am very grateful for you all, thank you #WorldPhysioDay #paediatricphysio #milestonesphysiotherapy #womenshealth #pelvichealthphysio #childhoodcancer #milestones #development

07.01.2022 Exactly that! Today was a good day. A day that made me smile, feel warm and fuzzy, and thankful that I have a supportive family, colleagues and get to be a physio and work with the #milestonesfamilies.... A day that I am normally with the kids, but I left home at 7am, just as they woke, guilty I was off to work without having quality time together. But I was working today to open the clinic for our first ever equipment trial day with @specialneedssolutions. I was nervous but very thankful for the support of @motherhen_jen for coming in on her day off and juggling uni commitments, because she genuinely wanted to be there, to support and learn. Thank you to Malia @maliabartlett for running errands when I didnt even ask! I am thankful for Mel and Julie from @specialneedssolutions for being patient with me and for being so wonderful with our Milestones families. Thank you to the incredible families who attended the trials today. It was very special to be a part of it and to share in the moments. I am thankful also for my supportive husband, for juggling work and the kids and for the smiles and cuddles when I got home. Ever so grateful and thankful for you all #milestonesphysiotherapy #paediatricphysiotherapist #specialneeds #inclusion #thankful #grateful

06.01.2022 To the girl (child) who reads by flashlight Who sees dragons in the clouds Who feels most alive in worlds that never were Who knows magic is real This is for you. ... @meaganspooner Engaging, beautiful, thought provoking, meaningful stories for our little ones. Theyre finally here! Those who know me would have heard me speak of the magic and importance of reading. As a Mother and physio I often say to families, and in particular new parents; if you can, do 3 things for your children; Tummy time Get them outside (especially during witching hour) Read to them Reading is not only about language and learning, its about nurturing neural pathways, bonding, getting lost in worlds together, fostering imagination, it helps create rhythms and sleep cues and a foundation and love for learning. As Dr Suess says You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book. These books and more are available in store only! Very limited stock. 02.01.2022 Wobbel Boards are finally back in stock next week! Just in time for Christmas we have a few new colours - Black and Wallaby but limited stock. Our Wobbel is a well loved item in our household & will continue to be for many more years! Wobbel boards are suitable, in my opinion, from 6 months and older - I even use ours during workouts and love jumping on for a Wobbel with the kids. The possibilities are endless & they’re fantastic open ended products!... They can be used; - to elevate a play space for young babies whilst in tummy time. Prop toys on top of the board to encourage prop and reach, pushing up on extended arms and also 4 point kneel/crawling position. - as a slide off the couch - for children who may be movement seekers and would benefit from a calming movement break - as a balance tool in vestibular rehab - as a bridge or tunnel for cars and trucks in #smallworld play set ups or #invitationstoplay - as a snack table when relaxing - to strengthen and engage the core, pelvic, buttock and lower limb muscles - improve coordination and proprioception (body awareness) - Wobbel yoga; a favourite for clients during telehealth when in lockdown - the side to side rhythmical movement can be calming for some children - step ups and downs - a platform for jumping and balancing - upper limb, hand and trunk strengthening when rocking on hands and feet And who’s tried the Wobbel walk? Have I missed anything? How do you play with your #WobbelBoard? 01.01.2022 #PANDAWeek2020 has come to an end and in true Jess fashion I’m late with my post..... but that simply epitomises life. A sometimes chaotic and stressful, but mostly wonderful adventure called parenthood. We were lucky enough to embark on this journey over 5 years ago when we found out we were pregnant in Paris (cue the mum guilt for ). We were so ready for this next chapter but nothing can quite prepare you, (no matter how many damn books you read) for the challenges, ...love and changes in life, that awaited. Bringing a child into the world is an absolute gift, but it can take a toil on mental health and relationships. 1 in 5 Women and 1 in 10 men experience post natal anxiety and depression - a statistic I did not want to admit to myself. No matter how much research or preparation or support one has, we never know how we are going to react to challenges and situations and emotions. Hormones are a crazy thing! How we navigate this journey is comparative to our own situation and can, at times, be overwhelmingly wonderful, but also like you’re drowning with the mental load of being wife, Mum, friend.... whilst also enjoying the evolution of a husband who’s now a Daddy, family who are now grandparents and uncles, aunties, cousins and friends who become family...... How we cope, is about our own individual journey. I didn’t cope well with the outcome of our birth, breast feeding, lack of sleep, change in routine and change in relationships. But second time around - I was more resilient. Over time I’ve learnt; - to get back to basics; get down to their level, play and laugh, they don’t need much but your love and attention. Don’t feel guilty for not doing allll the activities. - being married and having kids and navigating work/life balance is hard, but it’s a challenge, in MY situation, that is always worth the struggle. - don’t be afraid to take some time out; still working ontogeny one. - reach out for support; I am so grateful to my friends and family, my colleagues, the incredible #MilestonesFamilies I am lucky enough to work with & the #MeetingYOURMilestones Mums & bubs groups.
