23.01.2022 Whether you’re currently pregnant or well into your breastfeeding journey, there is a pretty big question that keeps popping up how long should I breastfeed for? Breastfeeding is an extremely personal experience so the real answer to this question is between yourself and your baby. However, the World Health Organisation recommends exclusively breastfeeding for six months and then continuing breastfeeding with solids for two years and then beyond for as long as the mother a...nd baby desires. I have had a wonderful breastfeeding experience with Tobi (once we got through the first few difficult months) and I’m still feeding him at 22 months. I don’t know how long I will continue to breastfeed for but currently we are both very happy. I also have friends who only breastfed for three months and are also very happy. The most important part to answering this question is seeking out information and support from your local medical professionals and the Australian Breastfeeding Association. These people can help you make an informed decision about breastfeeding but ultimately you are the only one who can answer this question. How long are you planning on breastfeeding for? What helped you make this important decision?

23.01.2022 || THE BEST VIEW - comes after the hardest climb. Were you 1 of 7 women who felt the depths of fear looking at those little fingers for the first time? YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Read an excerpt from one mom's journey to #climboutofthedarkness below of her raw chronicle of the first 48 hours living through postpartum anxiety and faking happiness during maternity leave. This is for all the women who suffer in silence and deserve to be heard. I remember the day we were to be dischar...ged. I asked how long we could stay. I didn't want to go home. I started to panic. I cried to every nurse who came in my room. One told me it was my hormones and everyone feels this way and I'd be ok. I tried to believe it. We finally left.... That night I lay awake. Feeding every two hours. Fuck. When am I supposed to sleep? What do I do if she cries? How do I know she's getting enough milk from me? And it goes on and on.... but the scariest thoughts came around 2am when I had been awake since the last feeding, shaking uncontrollably." @baltimore_birth_photographers Have you got a similar story to share? What helped you get through those early days, the cluster feedings and PND/anxiety?||

21.01.2022 ||EVER BEEN TOLD TO GIVE YOUR BABY WATER? Here’s why giving water to a breastfeeding baby before 6 months of age isn’t recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The WHO states that giving water to young babies puts them at risk of diarrhoea and possible malnutrition. Water may not always be clean and can cause the baby to get infections. Giving water may also cause the baby to drink less breastmilk or to stop breastfeeding early and therefore cause malnutrition. If... mothers give water instead of breastfeeding it can also cause the mother to have less milk in the future. Breast milk is more than 80% water, especially the first milk that comes with each feed. Therefore, whenever the mother feels her baby is thirsty she can breastfeed him or her. This will satisfy their thirst, and continue to help protect from possible infections, and help the baby to continue to grow well. Babies do not need water before they are 6 months old, even in a hot climate. This is also one of the reasons that the WHO recommends babies to be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life. A child is considered exclusively breastfed when he or she receives only breast milk, without any additional food or liquid, even water, with the exception of oral rehydration solution, drops, syrups of vitamins, minerals or medicines. When breastfeeding, the mother gives her baby all the water he or she needs, while providing safe water and protecting the baby against diarrhoea. So as we head into the warmer months of the year, if you’re a breastfeeding mum, trust your body and know that your breastmilk is enough and will adequately hydrate your precious bub. You might notice that they need to feed more regularly. Who else is excited about warmer months and longer sunny days ||

16.01.2022 Every voice counts... These three little words are so important to me. During those long nights and confusing moments as a first-time mum, there was so much advice and googling going on (especially at 2am) that it felt like my voice was lost amongst it all. Thankfully, it wasn’t all negative because those feelings and those long nights spurred on my idea for Milk Mate. I realised that being able to share my struggles and my amazing successes with other mums was really importa...nt to me. I want all mums to feel like their voice counts and I want to hear it. I want to hear about why you love or hate breastfeeding. I want to hear your funny stories or those moments where you wanted to give in. I also want to share your voice and your stories with our Milk Mate community so we can laugh and cry about it together. I truly believe we’re all in this together and as a community we can lighten the load and have a few good laughs along the way let's be honest, mums have some of the funniest stories! So please feel free to share your funniest story so we can all have a little laugh with you

15.01.2022 Our body is amazing! New research shows that breastfeeding helps protect mothers long term against diabetes.

15.01.2022 The reason we say breastfeeding is hard is because breastfeeding is HARD. One of the biggest things drilled into our heads as breastfeeding parents is that something will go wrong. We won’t have enough milk, we are going to dry up, some of us just can’t breastfeed, OR our milk is just not enough. The reality is that’s entirely unrealistic.... MOST women actually can breastfeed. We search for alternative routes, easier routes because we can’t comprehend that breastfeeding, something so natural, can be so difficult. We spend HOURS a day attached too a pump or we have a child at our breast. This has become a majority of our life from day to day. It’s all some of us mamas even think about on top of the reality of new motherhood. We’re not prepared for this. We’re not aware of the true bittersweet inconvenience. WHY can’t there be an easier way to feed our children? Didn’t God know we had 900 other things to accomplish in one day? The thing is, breastfeeding gives us time to STOP what we’re doing and be present. Put the dishes down and focus on our babies. The reality is my friends, breastfeeding is for the strong willed and it needs to be promoted, encouraged, and praised. It’s so important for the health of our planet and future generations. I will leave you with this friendly reminder.. Just because your breast are smaller then Susan’s down the street or softer then the day before, DOES NOT MEAN YOU DONT HAVE A MILK SUPPLY Remember our milk is specific to our babies needs at that very moment. 14.01.2022 NOT LONG NOW - I’ll be 37 weeks pregnant this week. Wow has it gone so quickly! I can’t wait to meet our beautiful bub once earth side. I often find myself day dreaming of what bub might look like. I’m getting more and more excited and can’t wait to hold bub in my arms. It’s going to be interesting to see how Tobi reacts to our newest family member. He always talks about sharing things with the baby. Which is really cute. I’ve been very quiet on social media lately, so I ...could spend more quality time with Tobi before he has to share my attention. I’ve also really loved having a break from social media while I prep and get into a good head space for birth. Preparing for birth the second time round has been so very different to the first time. This time we have our own private midwife and it’s really made the experience so much more calming and relaxed than my first pregnancy. I’d love to know what challenges you faced going from one to two kids that you weren’t expecting and let me know any tips that really helped with the transition See more

14.01.2022 ||WE MADE IT!! - It was my son’s birthday on Saturday, not only did this mark 2 years of amazing moments with my beautiful boy Tobi, it marked my 2 year milestone of breastfeeding him. Now this isn’t a brag post or meant to trigger any less than feels for other mums. It’s about allowing myself to celebrate a milestone that was very important to me. Breastfeeding for this amount of time has definitely had ups and downs! There have been blissful times where I’d stare down and... totally love the moment, to times where I’d just had enough, never wanting him to latch on again and I really wanted my boobs back. But those beautiful blissful times far outweighed the ‘give me my boobs back’ times. So now that we’ve made it to two years, where to from here?? Well these days breastfeeding is usually accompanied with hands full of duplo or matchbox cars. I often feel somewhat like a race car track as Tobi drives his cars across me while feeding. He is feeding less often and it’s usually a lot quicker. I will allow him to self wean and gently stop when he’s ready, because that’s what works for us. This isn’t everyone’s journey, but it’s ours. I wholeheartedly believe that no matter what your breastfeeding story is, it should be celebrated. Every feed is special! I’d love to know what milestone you set yourself? You can do it, you’re strong, brave and resilient, you’ve got this!||

09.01.2022 PARTNERS | Breastfeeding is a team sport and our partners are really important, especially in the first few weeks. As mums we are definitely the MVPs but our partners make up the best support crew. I’ve gathered a few tips for our partners because we all know they would love to help but sometimes it’s hard to know how. Learn about breastfeeding: just understanding how it all works can really help the mum when she’s struggling.... Help settle your baby: sometimes babies are very fussy with mums because they can smell the breastmilk you may have more luck helping them to settle. Look for practical ways to support breastfeeding: prepare food or bring water, remove siblings or visitors when appropriate. Be patient: breastfeeding can be very stressful in the first few weeks but it does get better and an IBCLC or the Australian Breastfeeding Association is a great organisation that can support you both. Take on extra housework. Don’t forget to let your partner know she is doing an amazing job. What was something special your partner did for you while you were breastfeeding?

07.01.2022 || HAVE YOU EVER TASTED BREASTMILK? - If you have, you’ll know it tastes quite sweet. Breastmilk contains over 150 sugars (oligosaccharides) that feed your baby’s intestinal microbes to keep healthy digestive bacteria flourishing. Bacteria from your body transfers through your milk to help your baby establish his or her own gut flora and immune system. The precise microbial makeup changes from day to day and season to season. Breastmilk really is perfectly designed and made... by our amazing bodies for our little ones. So..... spill the beans below and tell us if you’ve tried breastmilk? One of my girlfriends had run out of milk for a cup of tea, so popped a little bit of liquid gold in, she still claims it was the best cup of tea she’s ever tasted.||

07.01.2022 BETA-ENDORPHINS - are hormones that relieve pain and give a feeling of wellbeing. Beta-Endorphins are our bodies natural opioids and bind to opioid receptors. In adults they are the hormones that are responsible for the "runner's high" that many endurance athletes experience. Your babies are getting these feel good hormones every time they drink your milk. How amazing is our milk? Not only is it providing our little ones with perfect nourishment, it’s also helping them feel better when they are stressed or in pain.

05.01.2022 || MUM GUILT - Why do we do it to ourselves? It’s not like we don’t have enough mental load without piling on the guilt too, but we do because being a parent is tough. There are so many things that make us feel guilty, breastfeeding really takes the cake though. Understanding the best way to feed your baby and navigate the ridiculous amount of challenges that breastfeeding can throw at you, is hard (especially on top of sleep deprivation). My breastfeeding journey was really... difficult at the beginning and I definitely had some pretty intense mum guilt moments. The guilt impacted my confidence and undermined my amazing efforts. It’s easy for me to see this now but during those hard times and long nights, I struggled. I still suffer from mum guilt for other reasons, but I have started consciously weeding those negative thoughts out because they’re exhausting. Those negative thoughts also affect my self-confidence and my intuition, which are some of my most powerful mum tools. Plus, mum guilt takes away from the amazing job we’re all doing. Can you please join me in letting go of some of that mum guilt, even if it’s just for tonight? We are all doing our best and despite 2020 being a full-on year, we should be celebrating our successes not feeling guilty about our challenges. Let’s share some of our successes below and give up that mum guilt for a bit (or forever if you’re keen!). I’ll kick off by sharing one of my breastfeeding successes in the comments.. ||

02.01.2022 We have such high expectations of babies. We expect them to be able to eat and drink at regular intervals, timed without reasoning by us. Let’s not even go i to... our unrealistic expectations when it comes to sleep. Responsive (or also called demand) feeding is where you follow your babies cues and offer them the breast, rather than watching the clock and offering feeds at certain intervals. Bad habit? Nope. Mean you can never leave the house because you won’t know when they need to feed next? Nope. Going to get them used to room service like parenting? Yep but also nope. Is it developmentally appropriate and in their best interested? Yep, 1000x yep. For more than a few reasons- Babies need a regular intake of milk to ensure their blood sugar levels are stable A babies stomach capacity is small, around 90ml so smaller, frequent feeds are needed Breastmilk empties from the stomach around 40 minutes after a feed because it is low in protein and fat, but high in carbohydrates and lactose. It’s essential to maximise and protect your breastmilk supply Babies breastfeed for more than just nutrition, so denying a breastfeed based on the clock could be denying comfort, reassurance, safety, the opportunity to sleep etc. And finally, because you, as a grown human eat and drink when you want it. That’s not a bad habit by any means. It affords you the ability to drink to thirst and eat to hunger. On top of this, if we need comfort, reassurance or safety, we can seek it out ourselves. No one controls the timing of what we do. Babies are the exact same as us adults, they just have the inability to get what they need without our help. Respecting and trusting the needs and wants of our babies is fundamental.

Support from the milk bank is given to mothers who encounter difculties with lactation. Research shows pasteurised donor human milk pro...tects your baby from infectious disease especially vulnerable preterm babies. What an amazing gift to be able to give!
