25.01.2022 What a transformation! Amalgam has been the traditional material for filling cavities in posterior teeth for the last 150 years, due to its effectiveness and cost. In recent times though, Resin composites have become an aesthetic alternative to amalgam restorations and there has been a remarkable improvement of its mechanical properties to restore posterior teeth.

24.01.2022 How's your oral health tracking? Dental Health Week, which takes place this year from 5 to 11 August, is the Australian Dental Associations major annual oral health promotion event. Its aim is to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining good oral health by promoting these key messages: Brush twice a day with a toothpaste that contains fluoride.... Clean in between teeth at least once a day with floss or an interdental brush. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and limit sugar intake. Regularly visit the dentist for check-ups and preventive treatment. #dentalhealthweek

24.01.2022 EWWWWWW Bad Breath!! Have you ever been told you have bad breath? Does someone you know have bad breath? Here are some reasons you may be experiencing bad breath otherwise known as "Halitosis".... The major causes include a dry mouth caused by certain foods, smoking, poor oral hygiene and a coated tongue. Halitosis (bad breath) is a common condition caused by sulphur-producing bacteria that live within the surface of the tongue and in the throat. The treatment for halitosis will depend on the underlying cause. Smoking, dry mouth, dental infections and nasal or sinus infections can cause bad breath. Good oral hygiene, including brushing flossing and tongue cleaning, is important. Other treatments may include mouthwashes, nasal spray or antibiotics. The features of halitosis can include: -A white coating on the tongue especially at the back of the tongue -Dry mouth -Build up around teeth -Post-nasal drip, or mucous -Morning bad breath and a burning tongue -Thick saliva and a constant need to clear your throat -Constant sour, bitter metallic taste. Having halitosis can have a major impact on a person. Because of bad breath, other people may back away or turn their heads. This can cause a loss of confidence and self-esteem. Regular 6 monthly dental cleans are essential to ensuring your oral hygiene is maintained, along with brushing morning and night, along with flossing everyday. If you would like to make an appointment with us to have your teeth cleaned please send us an inbox or call us on 9321 7952.

24.01.2022 How often do I brush my teeth? If your answer here is once a day, heres the reality. Youre not alone on this by a longshot. Its been reported that 50% of Australians only brush one time every day on average. Still, its worth noting that most people brush right before going to bed, which is also the most important time to do so as thats when your mouth is most vulnerable to bacteria growth. But on the other hand, why risk the burden of cavities when you only need around... two minutes after lunch to brush your teeth? The golden rule is brushing twice a day with a toothpaste containing fluoride. Also, it matters to brush with circular strokes and without applying too much pressure. Brushing more aggressively or intensely can strip off the actual structure of your tooth and part of your gums. Then toothaches can occur as a result.

22.01.2022 WANT CELEBRITY PEARLY WHITES ? We do in chair and take home whitening here at Mill Street City Dental Centre. Dr. Kiran our principle dentist can assist you with an in chair whitening, this is an in office whitening treatment that is done in the comfort of our dental chair.... The in chair whitening is well known for soon to be brides and bridal parties and groom to be and groomsmen as well as those who just want that amazing celebrity pearly white SMILE. :) This treatment will take about 90 minutes and will whiten your teeth instantly although you will need to keep in mind every individual is different and their enamel may react to the whitening material better than others. An exam will need to be done prior to this in chair appointment to access that there are no work needed to be done in the mouth before proceeding with the in chair whitening. Given everything is dentally well we may be able to go ahead with the in chair whitening. The take home trays are also convenient for those who would like to bleach their teeth before a special occasion or outing. For this we will need to book in 2 visits. You will need to book in for a mould to be taken which will be used to make up your whitening trays. On your second visit we will supply you with your new take home trays and bleach for you to start your whitening journey. You may apply it whenever you please for 40 minutes. I personally like using it 40 minutes before a friends wedding or birthday party; I simply apply them while I get ready. They are so convenient to carry around and you can even apply them at night time before you sleep while you are watching your favorite series. The first visit will be about 30 minutes to make the mould and for an exam to check that you are dentally well before proceeding with the whitening, If all is well with the 1st visit you will book in for your 2nd visit which will be a 15 minute appointment to try in and adjust trays wherever is needed if necessary. It is important to remember that every individual is different and results may vary depending on the individual and their enamel as mentioned previously. Any patient who has outstanding dental work needed will not be able to proceed with both in-chair and take home whitening. FOR MORE INFORMATION BOOK IN FOR A 15 MINUTE CONSULTATION OR AN EXAMINATION.

19.01.2022 * If hot, cold, sweet or very acidic foods and drinks, breathing in cold air, or touching the affected surface makes your teeth or a tooth sensitive, then you may have dentine hypersensitivity. Tooth sensitivity can come and go over time. * Tooth sensitivity also known as dentine hypersensitivity affects the tooth via exposed root surfaces. This occurs when the enamel that protects the teeth wears away, or when gum recession occurs, exposing the underlying surface, the de...ntine, thus, reducing the protection the enamel and gums provide to the tooth and root. * Brushing properly twice daily for 2 minutes with a soft toothbrush with a toothpaste that does not have high levels of abrasives, and flossing once a day, can help reduce the chance of tooth sensitivity. A diet low in acidic foods and drinks also helps prevent tooth sensitivity. * In addition to recommending a soft toothbrush and a toothpaste without high levels of abrasives, your dentist may suggest an arginine and calcium toothpaste or a fluoride rinse, or a high fluoride level toothpaste specially formulated to make your teeth less sensitive and provide extra protection against decay. Other treatments such as fluoride varnishes can be painted onto the teeth to provide added protection.

17.01.2022 Here are some before and after photos of a young female patient who requested cosmetic detailing of her upper front teeth, with the main complaint that the centrals were longer in proportion to the laterals. She wasnt keen on having veneers or major procedures done. We were able to achieve the final results by simply adding and shade matching composite resin to the front six teeth. There was some reduction of the length of the central incisors per the patients wish. We have used black and white photography to eliminate any photoshopping bias and put the focus entirely on the teeth and their contours. The end result looks stunning

17.01.2022 X-rays, also known as radiographs, are an essential part of any dental care treatment plan. They are diagnostic, but they can also be preventative, by helping a dental practitioner diagnose potential oral care issues in a patients mouth before they become a major problem. The benefits of X-rays are well known: They help dentists diagnose common problems, such as cavities, gum disease and some types of infections. Radiographs allow dentists to see inside a tooth and benea...th the gums to assess the health of the bone and supporting tissues that hold teeth in place. There are a number of X-rays a dental professional can order. The type of X-ray needed will depend greatly on the type of care the patient needs to receive. Here are some of the most common types of X-rays performed here at MIll Street City Dental: Periapical Provides a view of the entire tooth, from the crown to the bone underneath. We can use this x-ray to check for infections under the roots of the teeth. Bite-Wing Offers a visual of both the lower and upper back teeth. This type of X-ray shows the dentist how the teeth are lining up and helps to detect (usually very hard to see) tooth decay between teeth.

16.01.2022 Bruxism is also known as grinding and/or clenching of your teeth. It is a very common condition that affects both children and adults. If you notice any of the following symptoms, you may be experiencing bruxism: *Rhythmic contractions of the jaw muscles... *A grinding sound at night *Jaw muscles that are tight or painful *Popping or clicking of the temporomandibular joint *Long-lasting pain in the face *Damaged teeth, broken dental fillings and injured gums *Headache The most effective solution is to use a professionally made night guard, which prevents the teeth from scraping against each other while you sleep. Your dentist may also have to restore damaged teeth with fillings or crowns to maintain the proper shape and size of the teeth.

14.01.2022 Look at this beautiful restoration done by our Dr Kiran Pothukuchi! Our patient came in for their regular check and clean and it was at this time when we spotted the crack in their tooth. We were able to replace the failing filling near the gum as well as conservatively flow in dental resin into the vertical crack line to repair the defect. What is a cracked tooth? A cracked tooth is a tooth that has become broken.... Do all teeth crack in the same way? No. Teeth can crack in several different ways: Cracked tooth: This is when a crack runs from the biting surface of the tooth down towards the root. Sometimes it goes below the gum line and into the root. Craze lines: These are tiny cracks that affect only the outer enamel of the tooth. They are common in all adult teeth and cause no pain. Craze lines usually need no treatment. Cracked cusp: The cusp is the pointed part of the biting surface of the tooth. If a cusp becomes damaged, the tooth may break. You will usually get a sharp pain in that tooth when biting. Split tooth: This is often the result of an untreated cracked tooth. The tooth splits into two parts. Vertical root fractures are cracks that start in the root and go up towards the biting surface. Why do teeth crack? Many things can cause teeth to crack, such as: Extreme tooth grinding, which can put the teeth under enormous pressure. Large fillings that weaken the tooth. Chewing or biting on something hard: for example ice, boiled sweets, fruit stones or meat bones. A blow to the chin or lower jaw. Gum disease, if there has been bone loss. This could make the teeth more likely to suffer from root fractures. Sudden changes in mouth temperature.

14.01.2022 If your not completely happy with your smile, you may think only extensive and expensive dental work can change it. But depending on your teeths actual condition, you might be able to obtain a new smile with a less-invasive option: porcelain veneers. As their name implies, veneers are thin layers of dental porcelain bonded to the front of teeth to cover imperfections. Theyre custom designed and manufactured by a dental technician to match the natural color, shape and size o...f the teeth theyre covering and to blend with neighboring teeth. Veneers are quite effective for heavily stained, chipped or moderately misaligned teeth that are otherwise healthy. They can even be used to address slight gaps between teeth and restore worn teeth to make them appear larger and more youthful. If you would like more information on porcelain veneers and other dental restorations, please contact us or schedule an appointment for a consultation.

12.01.2022 Importance of Brushing effective removal of plaque depends more on the brushing technique than on the toothbrush itself. Toothbrushes remove debris and plaque from the surfaces of teeth and gums. They also stimulate the gums to keep them pick and healthy. There are many different kinds of toothbrushes, so the question is, which is the most effective at removing plaque for you? Not all brushes are right for all people. Choose a brush that is durable, flexible, light weight, s...trong but not rigid bristles, easily manipulated and meets your individual requirements. Always use a soft or ultra-soft toothbrush. Softer bristles are more effective at cleaning the gum-line and more gentle on the gum tissues at the same time. Soft brushes reduce gum recession and toothbrush abrasion. Harder bristles can cause tooth enamel and dentin to wear away weakening the crown of the tooth. Brushing Guide: recommended for 2 minutes Hold the toothbrush handle in the palm of your hand with your thumb against the handle. Your thumb should be close enough to the head of the toothbrush to manipulate it with control. Direct the bristles toward the gums at a 45 degree angle to the tooth. Place the bristles partly on the gums and partly on the tooth surface. Gently vibrate the bristles and roll slowly, moving the bristles from the gums toward the top of the tooth. Slowly count to 10 as you do this procedure. Repeat these steps up to five more times in the same area. For the front teeth, position brush on its end and place the narrow end of the brush head 45 degrees to the gums and teeth, vibrate and roll as described previously. Electric Toothbrushes An electric toothbrush is a good alternative to a manual brush, especially if someone has physical limitations that affect their ability to brush. When used properly, certain electric toothbrushes are known to be more effective than manual brushes at removing plaque. Electric toothbrushes have higher speeds and motions that cannot be reproduced using a manual brush.Make sure to read all instructions before use, as all electric toothbrushes are designed differently. Technique remains important, as improper brushing technique can irritate gums and be less effective. Replacing a Toothbrush replacing a toothbrush Toothbrushes should be replaced every 3 months (at a minimum). Replace toothbrushes immediately following a cold or flu to prevent re-exposure to bacteria or viruses. Always replace a brush that looks worn of frayed. The same rules apply to disposable heads for electric toothbrushes. To book a check up call 9321 7952

10.01.2022 When a filling needs to be replaced Constant assault from eating and drinking, or stress from clenching or grinding, eventually may cause a dental filling to fail. Bacteria cause tooth decay. Fillings that have worn away, chipped, cracked or fallen out may leave gaps between the tooth and the filling that can provide an entry point for bacteria. These bacteria can not be removed easily with a tooth brush or other means, and decay may develop along the edge of the filli...ng or underneath it and if left untreated it can progress to infection. Regular dental examinations are important because problems with existing fillings, generally can be detected in the early stages. Here we have a patient of ours "Bob" who was smart and came in for his regular check and clean, at which point his failing filling was detected early. Now "Bob" has a tooth that is as good as new. Be like "Bob" and book in for your regular check and clean every 6 months.

10.01.2022 Here are some xrays taken of a middle age man who presented at our Mill Street City Dental practice with a fractured and painful front tooth. This tooth had previously had a root canal performed on it but because of the fracture it became infected. Unfortunately it had to be removed. The patient then had a dental implant placed by a specialist. After 3 months, we were then able to place a porcelain crown on top of the implant. The patient was fitted with a temporary denture to fill in the gap in his smile after the tooth was taken out, which was still used while the implant was healing underneath. The entire process from start to finish took approximately three months. The patient was then able to return to normal daily eating and chewing habits.

10.01.2022 Dental Emergencies and Sports Safety! If youre playing any contact sports, wearing a mouthguard can help protect your teeth from injury and trauma. Mouthguards are available at most sporting goods stores; however, to ensure a mouthguard fits properly, contact your dentist for a consultation to have one custom made to protect the teeth. If you are in pain from a broken, cracked or chipped tooth, you may be able to take over-the-counter pain relief in the short term. If possi...ble, keep any part of the tooth that has broken off and take it with you to the dentist. If a tooth is completely knocked out of the mouth by an injury, take the tooth to your dentist as soon as possible. It may be possible for your tooth to be placed back into your tooth socket, a procedure called re-implantation. If possible, reinsert the tooth in the socket immediately or transport it in a container with milk or wrapped loosely in plastic wrap. To help protect your teeth from injury while eating, avoid biting hard sweets and ice.

03.01.2022 Bridges and crowns are fixed prosthetic devices that are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, by your dentist. Crowns are used most commonly to entirely cover or "cap" a damaged tooth or cover an implant. Your dentist may recommend a crown to: * Replace a large filling when there isn't enough tooth remaining * Protect a weak tooth from fracturing * Restore a fractured tooth... * Attach a bridge * Cover a dental implant * Cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth * Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment * Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to shift resulting in a bad bite. This can also lead to gum disease and jaw joint disorders. Bridges are commonly used if you are missing one or more teeth. They fill the space where the teeth are missing and are cemented to the neighbouring natural teeth or implants. In addition to strengthening a damaged tooth, crowns can be used to improve a tooths appearance, shape and alignment. By filling the space left from missing teeth, bridges can stabilise the teeth and restore the bite.

02.01.2022 Here is a before and after photo of a patient of ours who came in needing a restoration of an old filling. A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function and shape. When our dentist gives you a filling, he first removes the decayed tooth material, cleans the affected area, then fills the cleaned out cavity with a filling material. By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay. Materials used for ...fillings include gold; porcelain; composite resin, that are tooth-coloured fillings. If you have a tooth that needs attention, dont delay. we are happy to help! call us on 08 93217952.

01.01.2022 Most of us can't live without a daily dose of coffee to jump start the day, but could the beverage that puts morning smiles on our faces also be making those smiles less brilliant? How Does Coffee Stain Teeth? Although the enamel of your teeth is the hardest substance in the human body, it is not flat and smooth. On the contrary, your tooth enamel contains microscopic pits and ridges that can hold particles of food and drink.... Pigments from dark-colored drinks such as coffee, tea, and soda can become embedded in those cracks and ridges and, if the proper steps are not taken, can cause permanent, yellowing stains on your teeth.

01.01.2022 Signs Your Filling May Need to Be Replaced * The filling is broken Wear and tear can eventually cause fillings to fail. Although it usually takes years of wear to crack a filling, the problem can occur sooner if you grind your teeth. Any opening in a tooth, even one very narrow, can allow bacteria to enter the tooth and cause decay. In some cases, you may actually see a break in a filling, but in others, you might not know you have one until you have X-rays during a dental vi...sit. * Your tooth hurts If you have a break in your tooth, you may develop a cavity or nerve pain. It's important to schedule a visit with our Mill Street dental clinic if you develop pain in a tooth. * You feel pain when you drink cold beverages Sensitivity to cold temperatures can occur as a result of leaky fillings. The problem happens when fillings don't adhere tightly to the sides of your teeth. * Your old filling has changed colour Tooth-coloured composite resin fillings can eventually become darker or may look slightly yellow. Replacing the filling restores your tooth's appearance. * Your filling has fallen out There's no doubt that you need a new filling if you've lost all or part of your filling. If this happens, call us as soon as possible during regular office hours. You might experience a little pain when the tooth is exposed to the air or hot or cold temperatures. * Your filling is old If your filling is old and showing some signs of wear, it's best to replace it before it cracks. Replacing problem fillings promptly can help you avoid tooth decay. If you're concerned about a filling, call our Perth dentist, Dr. Kiran Pothukuchi, on (08) 93217952 to schedule an appointment.
