25.01.2022 It's been a while since I have been able to spend time in the garden; I'm sure everyone feels the same with all the great load of rain we have had. To my delight, there were some very big and tasty spring vegetables this week. Take a look at these! And I am not talking about Richard.

21.01.2022 Never too late for Spring Hello gardeners, The rain has been really good for the garden. Some tomatoes plants have started to flower, so we may have a bumper crop this year. We hope your courtyard and balcony gardens at home are doing just as well!... The Silver beet are ready to be picked as well as some spinach. Just remember to pick the vegetables from the outside in, please do not pick the SHOOT of the Basil, pick the leaves from the side. Please record your pickings in the book in the garden seat box. Evelyn has asked for volunteers for weekly management of the garden from now until the end of summer, do respond if you wish to do some gardening. Happy gardening....

14.01.2022 Interesting insects in the garden: The colourful orange spider wasp (Cryptocheilus bicolour) visited the garden this week. Adult wasps feed on nectar, in this case the nectar of the strawberry flowers.. The female spider wasp preys on huntsman and wolf spiders by stinging their underside to paralyse them. She then buries it in a hole and lays her eggs in the spider which provides food when her eggs hatch. Action: Watch don't touch; the wasp will sting but only if provoked.

14.01.2022 Welcome Spring BBQ 16 September 2018 What a lovely day for a BBQ, and I hope everyone had a great time.... A special thanks to our ever reliable chef, to our burger and sausage purchasers and to all who brought salads and desserts. Our produce of cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, kale and rocket added to the feast. The continued success of the garden and the BBQ is due to the fact that everyone is involved in this community. It is a good feeling. We have in celebration of Spring now planted some tomatoes, eggplant, basil, as well as purple potatoes, jerusalem artichokes and asparagus. The brussell sprouts, beans will be ready to harvest in 2 to 3 weeks. The Silverbeet and spinach are still there for harvesting, as well as some tomatoes (very unseasonable). Hope to see you all in the garden.

14.01.2022 Our 'Painting Millers Point' Project was a fun activity involving the KU Lance pre-schoolers and staff, the Millers Point Community Centre staff and the Millers Point Community Garden Mural Team May-June 2019. The artwork by the children was based on themes of ‘life in the city’ and ‘what I would like to see in the city’. Have a close look at some pretty amazing creatures moving around Millers Point!! A ‘joyful artwork' and lots of fun were the outcomes of this co-operativ...e Millers Point community activity. Thanks to all participants. The mural graces the wall of an inner courtyard at the rear of the Community Centre.

11.01.2022 Good morning gardeners, The garden flourishes with the welcoming rain. There are a few cucumbers, capsicum and tomatoes to be picked. The cucumbers ggrow up to 30 cm long.... Do help yourself and share. Millers Point Community Garden

10.01.2022 The Millers Point Community Garden (MPCG) Mural story The MPCG Mural Project was an initiative of the group to add to the ambiance of the garden space and to make the garden more visible to the community, encouraging involvement in the MPCG. It was also planned as a fun activity for the community. A grant application for $2827 for materials to complete the mural was submitted to the City of Sydney Matching Grants Program was approved in November 2017. The major cost item is ...the Sign Writers Panel including installation ($2128 sourced from Signarama, Sydney CBD). Donations for materials from members and businesses totaled $409 and volunteer time totaled $2500 most of it for submissions, reports and negotiations to commence painting. The finished mural now decorates the fence between the community garden in the Abraham Mott Hall courtyard and the rear gardens of a terraces at 18-22 Kent Street. The mural collage is based on the amazing artwork of 2017 pre-school children of KU Lance Children’s Centre (Thanks to Donna Morley for her support for the project and the children for the artwork). Community members who helped to paint the mural include Jenna Bloom; Yasmina Bonnet and Alexandra Glazenburg; Carol Dance; Janette Hannan; Kay Knight; Candice Murphy; Janette Powell; Richard Spoehr; Geoff Wannan; Duncan, Joe and Inez Young. Not everyone interested could be involved due to the 1 Dec deadline. A major delay to the start of the project was the necessary repair work on the fence of 22 Kent St., completed August 2018. The project was managed by Janette Hannan and Jenna Bloom in consultation with the MPCGG Committee and managers of the Harry Jenson Centre - Colin and Sage. The mural was applied to the panel (2m x 6m) fixed to the fence with tape and battens for support then primed with exterior acrylic UV primer. The collage was copied onto the panel using the grid method with painting completed over 6 sessions from 14 to 27 November. The mural was glazed with clear exterior acrylic gloss to protect the work from weathering, cleaning and fading. The completed 2-panel mural will be ‘on show’ at the Millers Point Residents Christmas party on Friday 14 December 3:30pm 6:30pm. Further painting using ‘child friendly’ paint on the third panel is planned to involve the pre-school children (as a group) from KU Lance. More about that in 2019. Thankyou for your support and contributions to the project. Janette Hannan Dec 2018

08.01.2022 Our superb artichoke flower looks brilliant against the mural background!

05.01.2022 Good morning gardeners, There are silver beet to be harvested at the moment as well as some kale. The children, Joe, Inez and Harry helped to plant some heirloom tomatoes, as well as some yellow lettuce last week. Thank you Children. I grew them from seeds which I obtained from the Diggers Club ( I am a member), so hopefully we will have a bumper crop. I was given some jerusalem artichokes and they are in the ground now.... So, In the garden now, we have: 1) broad beans 2) brussel sprouts 3) silver beet 4) spinach 5) fennel 6) leeks 7) tomato seedlings 8) lettuce seedlings 9) eggplant seedlings 10) potatoes - purple 11) jerusalem artichokes 12) asparagus 13) cabbage 14) broccoli 15) blueberry We are also going to get some zucchinni plants (not last year's variety!), capsicum and chilli. The herbs are in the space behind the clinic If you are rostered on, please ensure the reservoirs are filled up on Sunday and the garden has some seasol fertiliser on Wednesday. The seedlings need to be watered as the root system is unable to wick up water at this stage. I do not believe we will grow cabbages and broccoli next winter - it is labour intensive getting the caterpillars and the harvest is meagre even though a lot of nutrients were used in the soil. If anyone has more ideas on what we should try growing please post or contact the committee. Those of you who still like to be a member, please pay your FY19 subscriptions to Simon our Treasurer. Attached are some photos taken today.

04.01.2022 Working Bee 21st July 2018 There was a working bee session this past Saturday morning at the Garden.... Thank you to Sue, Annette, Beverley, Janette P, Candice, Charley for helping out. The eggplants were removed and it was a great harvest; the leeks and fennel were thinned out; the cabbage leaves cut back; and the broccoli and other vegetables had a general clean up. Hope everyone enjoyed the harvest. Ling

04.01.2022 Today the panel for our garden mural was installed by the Signarama team (within and between showers). The panel has been sanded to provide tooth for the primer. Priming of the panel was not achieved today due to intermittent showers. Perhaps tomorrow! MPCG members will soon receive an email asking for volunteers to wield a brush to paint the amazing artwork completed by the pre-school children of KU LANCE in 2017. The collage featuring the childrens work (attached) requires ...some rework due to the reduced mural length. This was an outcome of negotiation for the support of the Kent St neighbours. Painting of the mural is expected to commence from 7 Nov (2018). In the meantime I'm off to Kangaroo Island for a hiking trip and some after hours mural redesign activity. Thanks to Ling, Anne, Evelyn and Simon and other members during this long process!

03.01.2022 Swiss chard (red chard lettuce) has an earthy and slightly bitter taste as a salad vegetable - nice served with a sweet dressing or cooked.

01.01.2022 Good to see veges in the garden and members harvesting! As is Gary's way, he often jokes about the small size of the produce from the garden. He's in for a treat tonight with a 34cm cucumber and light salad for dinner!
