24.01.2022 Remembrance Day

23.01.2022 Bush Knowing Forest School this week found us once again able to go down to the creek. Due to changes due to rain and flow the safe shallow areas have moved and Miss I and master H noted the changes in environs and surrounds. Master H scooped and miss I used the bucket looking for creatures but none were to be discovered. We did find a patch of clay in the creek bed and squelched it through our fingers , moulded it and noted how when rinsed in the running water how it dissolv...ed changing the water from clear to cloudy grey. The favourite activity of this week's session was exploring the Japanese art of Tataki Zome using flowers and plants . I look forward to exploring this more here. Watercolour wash over oil pastel drawings, using scoops/tweezers to move seedpods into different sized bamboo tubes , dragonfly life cycle, bush kitchen and pipettes were other activities enjoyed. As usual the session ended with group music and story time. The children were excited to receive their Bush Knowing tshirts as well Thanks Jo See more

23.01.2022 We've been exploring Australian native animals, today it was the Echidna Echidnas, sometimes known as spiny anteaters, belong to the family Tachyglossidae in the monotreme order of egg-laying mammals. The four extant species of echidnas and the platypus are the only living mammals that lay eggs and the only surviving members of the order Monotremata. Wikipedia

22.01.2022 The children and I love our Bush Knowing sessions , highly recommend .

20.01.2022 It's Thursday so that means Bush Knowing Forest School Due to the predicted inclement weather Jo set up in the undercover area beside the carpark and we wandered/explored from there. Today in the set up area the group worked with hammers and painted their woodwork. Other areas of interest were , loose parts, Australian animals, making a nature mobile with tree cookies and bamboo, rope work and colour mixing with the plastic paddles. We also donned our rainwear and went for a nature walk discovering new areas of the creek , a branch cubby, we spied a single duck and a pair of peewees and clambered over tree roots and dirt mounds. We then walked to the bridge hoping for some wildlife to spot however it was not to be. All in all another fabulous morning outdoors in nature.

19.01.2022 So wonderful to be back in nature and our regular Bush Knowing Forest School sessions. I'm not sure who was the most excited myself or the little people.

19.01.2022 Wunya ngulum (Welcome Everyone) As always a beautiful morning in nature at Bush Knowing Forest School . On arrival we made nature shakers to use at end of session music time. Lots of activities to choose from and due to the wonderful space used they were distanced so as to be mindful of social distancing ,also restrictions on numbers at activities to keep us all healthy. Today we enjoyed the musical instruments, digging and making a dirt city, the road/construction play , t...he bush kitchen, rolling and chasing the small cable reels , the sensory bags (my personal favourite was the carry plant) and just generally exploring. We finished the morning with a story , "The Wheels on the Ute" an Aussie take on the wheels on the bus and then a music and movement session. No visits down to the creek today as it was running a little high for our little people, safety first always. Love our Thursdays See more

18.01.2022 Interesting read !

16.01.2022 What are your thoughts? I believe that risky play is an important part of childhood and learning.

15.01.2022 Today at Bush Knowing Forest School it was snake awareness. Claudine came and spoke to us about awareness, safety and what to do if we came across a snake in the wild or at home. Freeze, Move away slowly and calmly and Tell an Adult. She also gave relevant information for the adults in attendance to assist in educating the children, doing snake drills and first aid. We then had the opportunity to see up close two snakes she brought along , Jesse the childrens python and Zeus the blackheaded python. During the rest of the session my group was focussed on collecting , gathering and rolling the numerous blue quandong scattered on the ground. We visited the creek to check on the catfish nests , whilst there we spied a moorhen, ducks a turtle and lots of colourful dragonflies.

15.01.2022 My bee hotel is hanging beneath the canopy of my bush lemon tree. Will keep an eye out for visitors

09.01.2022 Everyone in Queensland, including children, should get tested for COVID-19 if they show any symptoms no matter how mild. The most common symptoms are: Fev...er Cough Sore throat Shortness of breath Runny nose Fatigue As restrictions ease across Queensland, the risk of COVID-19 cases happening in the Queensland community increases, so we actually need more people to get tested for COVID-19. So, if anyone in your family is sick with any COVID-19 symptoms, you should get them tested straight away.

09.01.2022 Yesterday was last day of term for Bush Knowing Forest School This week we looked at the lifecycle of the ant. We explored the textures of tree trunks and leaves and created crayon rubbings. Jo made individual playdough portions with bottlebrush flowers, a small world focus on reptiles , plus lots more. Potion making with fresh herbs was a fun focus for my little people. The creek was still not able to be explored due to algae ,hoping for some rain over the holiday break to get things flowing again. Can't wait for next term

08.01.2022 Tuesday was national Indigenous and Torres Strait Children's day . Here at Mims Place each child received a special bag which included a book and activities in recognition of this special day.

06.01.2022 Rainy days and puddles are such fun. Just because it's raining outside doesn't mean outdoor play needs to stop!

04.01.2022 Thursday morning in nature Bush Knowing Forest School . This week is NAIDOC week, as well as Pollinator week. We looked at native and european bees and their lifecycles and we made our own native bee hotels to take home with us . These need to be placed in a sheltered position out of the sun :) There was indigenous music playing during the session and songs by Aunty Sharon featured at story/ music time. The story today was Respect . There was also a new resource for us to have some conversations around cultural understanding . A new swing was of interest and the group explored other offered activities as well. We wandered down to the bridge looking fore water dragons but only found two lonely turtles , we did spy one the plays pace just before leaving which was exciting.

03.01.2022 Enjoying my first day back after two and a bit weeks. This morning while the little people and I were setting up outdoors we discovered a hatched egg, we searched the branches above to see if we could find a nest but we had no luck. We are now wondering and imagining what kind of bird may have hatched.

02.01.2022 Due to the recent Qld Government restrictions we just wanted to reassure our wonderful community of our COVID plan that has been in place since the start of ter...m 3. These measures include reduce numbers in our groups- by half, hand washing before/during/after, even greater hygienic cleaning of resources and socially distanced learning experiences where one family is asked to interact with resources at a time. We have also individualised portions of clay and play dough to reduce cross contamination. All members of our community including myself ensure that if they are displaying any symptoms or are feeling unwell they do not attend. Please let me know if you have any questions.
