25.01.2022 France is certainly beautiful, no matter where wandering feet may take you. The Dordogne River valley is stunning! The rest of the surrounding countryside is almost empty of tourists, but here they swarm like hungry bees searching for pollen. Canoes and tourist boats float sedately downstream and the cafes and bars do a roaring trade along the banks. Now in early September many of the waiters are a bit abrupt and cranky,but it has been a long hot summer! What stands out here..., apart from the natural beauty of the valley, is the stone of the very ancient villages along the bank. Places with unpronounceable names unless you have caught a fly in the back of your throat. The stones seem to have absorbed the sunlight, and now radiate it back in a soft golden glow. Imagine a hillside of these terraces of houses, with alleyways leading up the hill and around the next corner. Grapes and tomatoes and figs just out of reach. Shutters closed against the heat of late summer. You have to keep on the look out driving through the countryside round lunch time. On the D125 between Fumel and Monflanquin there is a sign for a restaurant down a side road. About four kms winding through farmland and dodging tractors and there is St Aubins. A hamlet really, full of locals enjoying a three course lunch inc wine! OMG as they say on Facebook. Pâté de campagne, beef bourginone and raspberry tart pour moi, tomatoes avec mozzarella, lamb chops with haricot vertes et pomme frites, et du fromage pour mon ami, plus de vin! 25 seulement, por les deux. What a lunch. How do these French stay slim? The answer may lie in the wine, drunk at every meal except breakfast. Le vin rouge sont deliceaux, very berry, mainly black current. A rest in the afternoon is very welcome. Or the local church offers a quiet cool refuge for the days meditation practice.
