23.01.2022 One of our real passions is working with boards in the community and not for profit sector to translate the complexity and jargon of Enterprise Risk Management into practical strategies to strengthen Governance to deliver on the organisation’s purpose and vision. A lovely morning yesterday working with The Sleapy’s Foundation to support the excellent work they do in the Hunter region. We even managed to convince Peter Sleap that risk management could be fun Happy

20.01.2022 One of the keys to creating a successful Governance and Risk Framework in a large healthcare organisation is engaging effectively with clinical and operational teams to create a common language of risk. Partnering with the Western Sydney Health Risk Management Unit to create this outcome continues to be an exciting project for us. We’d love to hear about the experience of others in this dynamic and challenging space.... Happy Wednesday

20.01.2022 Say cheez The conversations, the banter and the insights just keep coming. Thanks Michael Maher for a great presentation reminding us that : The Compliance burden for highly regulated industries will only continue to increase... The costs of non-compliance, including brand and reputation damage will rise steeply post COVID Attaching mandatory training records to people , not organisations creates agility for mobile workforces and efficiency for organisations In the Industrial Age small business couldn’t match the resources and capital of large corporations while in the digital age large corporations can’t match the agility or the authenticity of small specialised organisations. Happy Friyay

16.01.2022 Thursday Thoughts..... The world feels chaotic at the moment and many organisations we work with are operating with a reactive posture. While COVID has demanded quick reactions, this posture brings significant downside risk including encouraging a bias toward System 1 decision making in behavioural economics speak instead of System 2 decision processes. ... How can you course correct to become more pro-active ? In the immortal words of professor Taylor Swift .... You need to calm down. Use quality risk management tools to support your decisions like SWOT analysis and Bow Ties as this will slow the pace of decision making , Encourage your organisation to reduce consumption of tabloid media and focus information sources to evidence based content, Take the time to effectively communicate with your organisation as this will also act to calm things down. Happy Thursday

16.01.2022 Avoid this bad weather and get toasty with a great conversation! Grab your Focaccia and join us at 1pm AEST....mmm Focaccia... https://zoom.us/j/9455545122

15.01.2022 ThursdayThoughts..... Risk based thinking, we use it all the time in our personal lives without realising it. It can be just as simple to apply to strategic or operational decision making in organisations as well ! Risk management doesn’t have to be complex or difficult ... #HappyThursday

14.01.2022 Serious faces navigating a complex and emerging risk issue. This month’s Community of Risk Management featured a great Q and A session with Jennifer Parkes detailing complex issues ranging from unspoken psychological impacts on leaders during recent months through to when and if you can reasonably direct a worker to #wfh or complete a C***D test. It was also great to share interstate and international insights on psychological risk issues. ... Thank you Charles Paré for joining us for the early shift from Switzerland and providing an insightful European update and Rupert Evill for keeping us abreast of the broader Oceania picture as well as our regular valued contributors from NSW, Vic, QLD and WA. Join us next month to discuss internal fraud risk management and the recent ICAC report on elevated internal fraud risk during times of crisis. Happy Friday

12.01.2022 The Catherine Hill Bay Jetty holds a special place in my heart as it does for many others in the region. It was a privilege to present a great case study on the Governance and Risk issues associated with the jetty to the University of Newcastle Corporate Governance students. Thank you DR Marcus Rodrigs and students for your engaging questions and comments. Most of the community don’t understand the complexity surrounding this iconic structure and it was great to co-present w...ith Craig Shales who has held the role of managing this icon in the past. In 2020 there is nothing odd about talking to a screen in your lounge room. Happy Monday

05.01.2022 Serous faces but engaging discussions Many thanks to Baidy Laffan for getting the conversation flowing on the complex and sometimes confusing application of Modern Slavery Legislation. The lowdown: Apply the risk management process as you would for other risk categories... While the threat of penalties is real, the threat of reputation damage is even greater COVID has increased the vulnerability of people already exposed to slavery Our next Community of Risk Management will be the first Wednesday of August at 1pm AEST. We will be leading a great discussion on social engineering and the link between physical and cyber security. Happy friyay

02.01.2022 We know that Zoom will never replace the quality of interaction that you can achieve working with people face to face, but it’s pretty cool when it can be used to overcome the tyranny of distance in such an effective way. Working with the Anindilyakwa Land Council today brought together participants from The Sunshine Coast , Cairns, Groote Eylandt, Port Macquarie and Newcastle. And the best part was we didn’t have to deal with premiers, politics and border crossings. Happy Wednesday
