25.01.2022 In the last 24 hours, NSW police have become aware of, and are investigating, two incidents of firearms theft in western NSW. There is little doubt these 12 weapons, including at least EIGHT handguns, will soon find their way to criminal networks in Sydney, Brisbane, or Melbourne. While the risk of being caught in a random attack, or as a bystander to armed crime remains low, these targeted crimes highlight the need for robust preparation by security organisations in prepari...ng their staff to best handle and survive a violent encounter - because when your worst day starts, you won’t rise to the occasion: you’ll sink to your training. By the time you realise this, it’s too late. Mindset Securities (NSW M/L 000101961) specialises in delivering industry leading professional development services, and pride ourselves on the robust quality of our guards and EPOs. Through our partnership with Mindset Abilities, our staff are well inoculated to the stress of violent encounters, and are trained to provide Psychological First Aid to our clients and innocent bystanders. Call, email, or DM us today to discuss your security or consulting needs.

22.01.2022 This is my mate's retired MWD who got ripped apart by another dog. If you have a few dollars you could spare for the vet bill (first round of surgery cost $10K) I would be really grateful. My mate is also a retired veteran with some serious medical issues. I would be very grateful for any donations. And if you could share this for me.

22.01.2022 KNOW THE BASICS. While we absolutely don’t seek to blame the victim for what happened, this incident highlights some good lessons in personal security. Make no mistake - it could happen to you. Some good practices to get into when using your car:... 1. As you approach your parked car, check the surrounding terrain - where would you wait if you were going to sneak up on your car? 2. Few people use physical keys these days. Have your fob ready, but don’t unlock your car as you approach - this could draw unwanted attention to you, or act as a trigger to anyone waiting. 3. Once you reach your car, stand at the drivers side pillar. Take a quick scan of your surroundings to about 20 metres. Pay attention to those spots you identified on your approach. 4. Make a check of the backseat and interior. It’s unlikely these days, but be sure. 5. Open the car, get in, and LOCK THE DOORS. Don’t mess about with your phone, or starting the engine, or adjusting the seat. Do this AFTER the car is secured. 6. Make a final scan as you start the engine - check your immediate exit and move off. When you’re parking and leaving your car: 1. Don’t get tunnel vision in hunting for a good spot. Take the time to check for the same sort of risk zones as mentioned in step 1. above. 2. If possible, park somewhere immediately near your destination, or in a well-lit area with open approaches. 3. If possible, reverse into your spot - this makes it easier to leave if you need to, and gives you more time to observe your environment. 4. Before you shut off the engine, make a final 360 scan, identifying any close risk areas. 5. Shut off the engine, ensure you have everything you need (so you don’t have to duck back into the car). 6. Use the Dutch reach - operate the latch with your right hand, and use the left to push the door open under control. This forces you to look behind you for anyone approaching, or cyclists speeding up on you. 7. Once the door is open, swing both legs out and plant your feet - in case the door swings back on you, or someone tries to force it on you, this reduces the likelihood of getting a leg broken, or being pinned against the car. 8. Stand up and sidestep to the pillar. Close the door under control while facing out, and scan the area again for any suspicious activity. Once you’re happy, lock the car and move directly to your destination by the most well lit, unobstructed path. What measures do you take for your personal safety and security? Call, email, or DM us if you’d like to talk to one of our expert consultants about seminars or training for you, your family, your business, or your staff. We’re here to help you stay safe, and focused on what’s important to you. 20.01.2022 Later this week, we’ll explore the bystander effect and what it takes to be an active bystander. It can be easy to grow complacent in familiar and comfortable places or routines. Combine this with the reduced situational awareness most people employ during commutes and other boring activities and you have conditions prime for targeted, low payoff crime. Some ideas for enhancing your safety around trains and other public transport:... Position yourself where you can observe any approaches, such as the end of a station platform, Regularly scan the environment and make note of suspicious or repeated behaviours, If possible, identify the CCTV saturation points, and either occupy them or be prepared to move to them, Know at least two ways out in case of an extreme incident, Identify any security staff or Transit Command Police and Protective Service Officers, Ride In the front carriage with your back to the driver’s compartment so you can gain direct attention if need be. Mindset Securities (NSW M/L 000101961) provides security solutions and training for organisations and individuals. Call, email, or DM us to start the discussion around your unique security situation. 18.01.2022 I have spent my adult life in the security industry with the Australian Army, working for a range of security companies and now successfully running my own security business. We have a gap in our security training when it comes to mental health and mental illness. To fill this gap I’m facilitating a range of mental health training designed specially for our industry. Designed in partnership with a workplace psychologist to bring best practices for guards, junior managers and senior managers in how to be healthy and effective at work. We can design a program to best suit your individual or organisational needs or we can tailor one that has already been tried and tested.

18.01.2022 Relevant to our Professional Centre article last week: The shifting distribution patterns of firearms into lower-tier criminal and petty organisations and individuals has led to a rise in the likelihood of violent encounters. Here, we see what appears to be an opportune attack on a marked police vehicle. Unlike the movies, the officers didn’t jump out and start a blazing gunfight, but sought distance and shelter to continue to monitor and report the incident and allow an or...ganised response to be effected. Key to maintaining this level of control over a violent encounter is planning, training, and rehearsing contingency responses. Without comprehensive planning and consideration of likely situations and outcomes, and thorough training and rehearsals of those actions, the likelihood of inappropriate responses - either freezing into dangerous inactivity, or escalating with equally dangerous use of force - increases dramatically. Consider that these officers are armed, equipped, and trained to deal with violent encounters, and have been inoculated to the stress inherent in those encounters. Now consider your experience with violent or traumatic situations. Did you respond as you imagined you would? Had you planned and practiced your responses? What sort of experience had you had in the past? Do you employ or contract security staff? Ask yourself the same questions about their training and experience. You never rise to the occasion. You fall to your training. Mindset Securities (NSW M/L 000101961) is a boutique full service security and consulting service. 17.01.2022 This week, there are big things coming to Mindset's capability suite. One of our passions as trainers, mentors, and leaders is quality training that produces a quality outcome. In an industry where client-facing service in stressful situations is the norm, we think it's well beyond time for our guards and staff to get the best training and assessment to set them up for success in their career, and ongoing support in professional development and continuous improvement. One of ...the biggest fears of clients and staff when engaging security is that the presence of guards will "escalate" a situation, or that guards will overreact to a situation. This week, we discuss stress inoculation - the proven method of getting the best performance out of people in high-risk environments and situations. Mindset Securities (NSW M/L 000101961) is committed to ensuring every guard goes home safe at the end of their shift. We are constantly striving to innovate and deliver industry best practice to make sure our community is safe, protected, and supported to be the best it can be. 11.01.2022 When we think of active shooters, we almost immediately associate them with the USA. But there is every risk, with just as serious consequences for innocent bystanders. One of the biggest risks we face here is the willful, if subconscious, complacency that comes from living in relative safety - so this week, in our Professional Centre we're looking at the Australian Guidelines for responding to an Active Armed Offender in a public place. Forget the John McClane fantasies - th...e reality of dealing with violent encounters successfully is more reliant on sound planning, preparation, and practice than people playing last-minute action hero. 07.01.2022 Have you installed low-voltage systems like alarms and CCTV as part of your security plan? Whilst your insurance company may thank you with a lower premium, don’t be lulled into thinking they are an effective deterrent on their own: a key consideration is that they only work after the fact - and offenders will always strive to exploit gaps, such as the stolen car/stolen plates combination used here. Are you confident in your staff acting appropriately in a violent or potentia...lly violent encounter? Would you bet your life that you’d know what to do? 07.01.2022 Today I have received so many messages from security guards who have lost their employment. It’s been a bloody tough day. My business has not been hit to hard yet, but the hits will come. We can work together so eager guards can find work, and there will be reduced rates offered in order to get people back working.

06.01.2022 If I am not for myself, who will be? If I am only for myself, what am I? If not today, then when? - Hillel The Elder, 1st Century BC We often hear this misquoted, and more often misattributed maxim as If not me, then who? If not now, then when? ... 03.01.2022 Recently, We looked at some considerations for personal security around our vehicles after a woman was carjacked after parking opposite her gym. Today, Victoria Police are investigating a seemingly random assault on a man parked in Northcote. We habitually experience a loss of situational awareness when we are comfortable or in familiar situations. These lulls in awareness are the opportunities aggressors seek to exploit, and we are each individually responsible for our own s...afety. Something as simple as keeping the car doors locked may have disrupted this assault. Often, people cite "What if I'm in an accident and rescuers can't open the door?" as a reason for leaving them unlocked. The simple answer to this is that if rescue is a matter as basic as unlocking the door, the emergency may not be as urgent as you think. This thinking is akin to the approach seen by some contractors in high-threat environments like Iraq of Afghanistan who insist on riding without a seatbelt "In case the vehicle's on fire, and I have to debus..." - overlooking the fact that whatever incident has caused the vehicle to be on fire has probably thrown them about the vehicle like a ragdoll, killing or seriously injuring themselves or others before they ever have the chance to get out of the vehicle. So, come the thought of security, apply Occam's Razor: the simplest solution is usually the best. If thinking about your own, your family's, or your business and staff security is a bit overwhelming, call, email, or DM us to speak to one of our experienced consultants.
