01.01.2022 OCD AWARENESS...what is it, really? Constant checking. Frequent cleaning. Repeating rituals. Contamination fears. Religious obsessions. Do any of these come to mind for yourself of someone you know, when reading that? If so, it may be a sign of experiencing symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).... OCD has two major types of symptoms: "Obsessions" refer to unwanted and intrusive thoughts, urges, or images. "Compulsions" refer to repetitive behaviours performed in response to an obsession, according to a rigid set of rules, and aimed at reducing anxiety. In everyday life this may look like repeated handwashing, checking things over and over, ruminating needing things to always have order and symmetry, for example. Anxiety levels in people who have OCD increase very easily, resulting in warning signs that are more intense than necessary. For example, someone who is leaving their house might fear that the stovetop was left on (obsession) which might increase their anxiety substantially, resulting in checking the oven multiple times to ensure it is off (compulsion). The relief obtained afterwards strengthens the belief that in order to reduce the anxiety caused by the obsession, checking the oven multiple times is necessary. So if you or your child experienced any or all of these symptoms WE ARE HERE TO HELP. Our team are experienced in dealing with many psychological disorders including OCD and anxiety. Call us today (03) 5323 0277 #OCD #psychology #mentalhealth #anxietyawareness #ocdaware
