21.01.2022 ***BREAKING*** KAMBALDA NICKEL MINE SOLD The historic Long nickel mine has been sold to Mincor Resources in a cash-and-shares deal worth $9.5 million as Kambald...a’s once-booming nickel industry gathers momentum for a potential restart. Production at Long began in 1979 and the mine produced about 300,000 tonnes of nickel metal over its life. The underground operation was initially closed in 1999, but reopened in 2002 and ran for 16 years under Independence Group ownership until it was placed on care and maintenance in June last year. Mincor’s Durkin North deposit is only 1.2 kilometres from the underground infrastructure at Long. Mincor’s managing director David Southam said Long has been well-maintained, with all key mining infrastructure and assets in place and the underground mine remaining de-watered and ventilated. As well as expanding our strategic footprint in Kambalda, the acquisition of the fully maintained mine infrastructure at Long opens up opportunities to exploit the existing high-grade mineral resource and provides potential to enhance capital and operational efficiency by accessing our nearby Durkin North ore reserve from the Long decline, Mr Southam said in a statement. The Long acquisition comes after Mincor recently struck a deal to process ore through BHP’s Kambalda nickel smelter. It is the second major sale at Kambalda in nine months after American company Black Mountain Metals bought the mothballed Lanfranchi nickel mine for $15 million last September. 18.01.2022 RISE OF THE SILVER SWAN A company backed by mining magnate Andrew Forrest has begun refurbishing the Silver Swan nickel mine, about 50 kilometres north-east o...f Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Poseidon Nickel, in which Mr Forrest holds an 18 per cent stake, has begun repairing emergency escape ladders at the underground mine. The work will allow drilling crews safe access to explore for new mine reserves, ahead of a decision to restart operations. Silver Swan operated for 12 years and stretches more than 1,400 metres below the surface. It was shut in February 2009 after nickel prices collapsed in the wake of the global financial crisis.
