21.01.2022 The CD below contains the book that was published by the Society when researching the names and service of the men who served King and Country during World War 1. The first section of the book consists of reports from the Minyip Guardian and Sheep Hills Advocate for the years 1914 to 1918 that relate to the men and their service. The second section is the final list of the men from Minyip and the close surrounding district who enlisted for service and is the list used for ...the Memorial Wall at the Minyip Recreation Reserve. It is noted that not all the men listed were necessarily residents at the time of enlistment but had some connection to our town and district. The third and final section of the book consists of the first page of most of the service records of these men. Some of the records were unavailable as they had either not been digitised or had been included in the service records for the Second World War. It was decided to included only the first sheet of the Service R3cods as some Records consisted of a signify the number of pages with up to ninety for some records. This CD is for sale at the Society. Price $25.00 plus postage. Cost of postage to be advised. Contact President Diane 0417642410 or Secretary Shirley 0428857491 if interested.
20.01.2022 2020 probably should not ever have happened. HOWEVER, we are now nearly at the end and 2021 will be the best ever, so we can all be thankful for the hope the New Year will bring. We have kept up with our filing of documents and newspaper clippings, research requests and all the odd administration jobs that still require attention. The Committee is hoping to meet soon just to ensure that payments are made, receipts acknowledged and to plan where the Society goes in the near fu...ture. Maybe even organise a Christmas meeting! Last year the Society ran an extremely successful Flowers for Fuel day to raise funds for our new fuel station in town. Next year (2021) Shirley and Diane have discussed organising another Open Garden Day for people to wander a range of our wonderful gardens here in Minyip. The date chosen is Sunday 10 October. The funds raised will support the aims of the Society. Rupanyup is looking to the end of October 2021 for their Open Garden Day as the proposed 2020 day didn't happen due to the closure of Victoria at the time. More on the Garden Day and Christmas soon.
20.01.2022 Photos donated but with no information. Can anyone out there identify the home or the horse sale location?? Both photos are by O.E. Habel of Minyip and the horse sale is dated 1910
20.01.2022 Today Waynes list of childrens names was collated and these are published here as family names. Do you have a connection?? All these children and young people lay in unmarked and unknown graves in our Minyip Cemetery. Help our Society to recognise these young ones by donating through the gofundme link on this page. Every dollar will help. Thank you.

20.01.2022 April, May, June and now July have all passed with no meeting due to Covid 19. We ae hoping for August. In the meantime, Shirley and Diane have been hard at work at the Guardian Office keeping our files updated, answering mail and carrying out research on request. Diane has now digitised our two Minyip history books - Minyip...100 Years Young and Minyip...20 Years on 1972-1992. The third volume is well underway with research through our files for each year 1993-2017 c...ompleted for Minyip...The Next 25 Years. We are now asking for family and business recollections to add to this volume that we hope to print for the 150th anniversary celebration of the founding of Minyip in 2022. SO if you have data, documents, recollections that you would like included please contact us through this page, our email or call in at the Guardian during our opening times. See more
18.01.2022 Yes, Minyipians did invade Dimboola last evening, Tuesday 13th, but it was a friendly visit. Firstly nibbles & drink in the Elbow Room at The Victoria Hotel. Great room, with lots of character. Then we were whisked off to the Print Museum, where Dale & Raymond from the Dimboola Historical Society showed us the workings of the old presses. Then back to the hotel for an evening meal. Great night, very well looked after by all. Thank you to Meran Pilmore at the Hotel who organised the evening. Our members enjoyed and had a great night.
18.01.2022 Sitting on the front mudguard of the motor bike is Robert James Christie (Scotty). He came from Scotland to Minyip in 1922 but his son is unsure where he worked or with whom. He was a friend of a Mr Bill Jackson who is believed to have had a small plumbing business. His son is hoping that someone may recognise his dad or someone else in the photo. Any information will be passed on to his son who now lives in Ballarat.
18.01.2022 Another query about a photo. Does anybody recognise these people. We believe they work on the Owens farm late 40s early 50s
18.01.2022 September 1st is Wattle Day. Beautiful tree in Town Square alongside Guardian Office.
16.01.2022 Today 24 November, Flowers for Fuel day has come and now has almost gone. Weather was fantastic, not hot, not wet, not cold, just a lovely late spring day. The gardens that were open to visitors looked amazing, particularly after the very hot windy day on Thursday. Visitors came from far afield, Geelong, Ballarat, Natimuk, St Arnaud to name just a few plus all the closer towns to Minyip. Lessons learned and noted, in two years we will try to do it again. Garden hosts wer...e great and our helpers, we could not have done it without you. Our town businesses also benefited from the number of visitors to Minyip, Emmas and the Minyip Hotel were open for lunch and were very busy and the Lions BBQ proved to be popular as well. So well done Minyip, we dont have to be a big town to succeed, just need to work together. will post raffle winners and final figures later in the week.
16.01.2022 Next Friday 30 November we invite the community to bring their photos along to the Guardian Office so that we can scan them and add to our records. Photos e.g. wedding, family, farm life, or any other activity that has happened in the area. We will scan them while you wait.Next Friday 30 November we invite the community to bring their photos along to the Guardian Office so that we can scan them and add to our records. 14.01.2022 Our fundraiser for a children's memorial at the Minyip Cemetery continues to grow. Up to now we have received $2,775 through the gofundme appeal with a further $1, 000 generously donated by the Minyip Lions Club, giving us an overall total of $3,775. The financial support offered for the memorial has been great as has been the genuine interest shown by so many people. You will notice that Russell Connelly's name appears as a beneficiary on the gofundme site. Russ is the treasurer of the Minyip Historical Society and thus the designated person to receive and account for all funds received. We still need support so please spread the word and encourage others to consider contributing. Many regards Wayne Jackson
14.01.2022 Thank you to Wayne Jackson for conducting our Cemetery Walk on Tuesday evening 15 October and thank you to all who attended, especially ex Minyip residents who travelled a distance to attend. Wayne used the records from the Historical Society, plus some research of his own. We are so thankful to previous members of the society who so painstakingly kept details for future reference. If you are reading this and would like to donate funds to the Minyip Historical Society to make sure we can keep documenting Minyip area and Minyip residents history we would be most grateful. Thank you everyone who attended and many thanks to Wayne. It was a lovely evening. Shirley Smith - Secretary Minyip & District Historical Society
14.01.2022 A question was asked recently as to whether the 'Shamrock Hotel' building in a previous post was still standing. It certainly is although the front has been altered. Two photographs are attached. One taken in 1909 with a select group of unknown gentlemen standing in front. The second photo taken in 1908 shows the Shamrock hotel and Selkirks two story 'Commercial Hotel' under construction (note the building material on the footpath). In between these buildings is the older S...hamrock hotel but not the first. The first burnt down in 1887 and the one shown is its replacement. The older Shamrock was at various times a tailors shop, hairdressers, billiard room, Germano's boot repair shop, leather and hand bag factory and an electrical business (Eddie Foot the last to occupy the front section). The new Shamrock held its license until 1921 then becoming a boarding house, coffee palace, and a private residence (with the front being leased as shops). The Waller family resided there in the late 1940's before being bought by the Germano family in 1967. See more
13.01.2022 Hi to our Minyip Historical sleuths. This photo, by photographer WJ Ford of Ararat in circa 1900 was taken in Minyip with the notation on the reverse "To Aunt Esther from Will" . Do you know who Esther is, or maybe you could claim Will as one of your family.
13.01.2022 Looking forward to this event. Planning is now looking on-track and it should be a great day. Our collection of donated items for the raffle is growing with a number of small but lovely items being received, eg boxed chocolates and succulents in handmade boxes. Where possible, items are on display in the BP (Shirleys) windows. Tickets are available from businesses in town. If you cannot get to Minyip but want to support the day, please message us and we will arrange for tickets and payments.
13.01.2022 A very pleasant lunch with Merle Drum at Donald Cafe. Merle is a very valued member of the Society and today we travelled to Donald to present Merle with a Life Membership Certificate. Photo shows Merle being presented with her certificate by Joy King IPP, supported by Margaret Drum, also present at the lunch was Shirley Smith who took photo.
12.01.2022 Our next meeting will be Tuesday, February 19. Theme is "Summer Poetry and Summer Drinks"
11.01.2022 Does anyone recognise this photo?
11.01.2022 Three days to go.
10.01.2022 How's this for leaving your mark on a community James Barnes (1858-1938) emigrated to Victoria from England in the 1870’s and made his way to Minyip via Creswic...k and Ballarat. He married Albertine Dewar in 1880 and they had six children. In 1891 they arrived in Minyip and built a house in Main Street from where James commenced business as a Pharmaceutical Chemist, Veterinary Surgeon and Surgical Dentist. He had been in the first group to sit the newly introduced Pharmaceutical exam in 1877 holding registration number 1. He was also one of the first to be registered under the initial Veterinary Surgeons Act in 1889. James was the consummate townsman being on every committee imaginable usually holding executive positions including 34 years as president of the Progress Association. He was a Justice of the Peace for over 40 years as well as being the district coroner and had a keen interest in the development of new strands of wheat and the identification and eradication of noxious weeds. James died in 1938 and his funeral was one of the largest seen in the district with well over 200 cars in the cortege to the Minyip cemetery. He is remembered by the James Barnes Avenue on the northern entry to the Minyip township. Like a repeat of history, James’s son also called James, commenced as a pharmacist and veterinarian in Horsham in 1907. He also became a JP and served 27 years on the then Horsham Borough and Town Council, being mayor on six occasions between 1915 and 1937. He was a passionate supporter of education and served on the Horsham High School Advisory Committee and lectured at Longerenong Agricultural College. He died in 1939 at the relatively young age of 56. Horsham’s Barnes Boulevard is named after him. Two Remarkable People Wayne Jackson
10.01.2022 Cr Graeme Massey was our guest speaker last Tuesday evening, and he spoke about the end of WW1. Graeme also mentioned two men from our area. One was Ernest Robert Newell whose name is recorded on 5 Honor Boards. The other is Bert Glasson, who actually worked in the Guardian Office before the war. He is named on 10 Honor Boards, including some in Warracknabeal.

08.01.2022 Flowers for Fuel is just under three weeks away. The Committee has been working hard to make this event a success and just about all is in place. We would like to thank Rupanyup-Minyip Bendigo Bank, Warrack Home Hardware, GWM Water and the Pipkorn & Kelm Trust for their sponsorship and support. Our local businesses have been great in putting up our posters and selling raffle tickets for us, so thanks to Minyip Meats (Gary the Butcher), Nicki at the Minyip Post Office and Ch...emist, IGA, Emmas Caf, Saddlers Second Hand & Craft and Murtoa Pots. Your assistance and support for this event is really appreciated. Not forgetting our six garden hosts (still a secret until the day) as well as the community garden at Emmas. Check out some of the raffle prizes in the old BP front window. Not all of them are there yet. You can get your tickets at any of the above businesses or on the day at Minyip Historicals Guardian Office
08.01.2022 President Diane thanking our Guest Speaker Tiena Funcke at our meeting last Tuesday evening. Tiena spoke about coming to Australia with her parents when she was 8 years old and the experiences they had settling into life here. Tiena also spoke about her experiences as an umpire for Lawn Bowls. In 2000 was picked to be a marker at WW of Sport at Tweed Heads, and also marked at the Commonwealth Games. Her biggest thrill was being asked to mark the final.
07.01.2022 A walk through the Minyip Cemetery with Wayne Jackson identifying just a few of the tragedies and stories of past residents of our town. While we do not have a total group photo, some 40-50 people took part in the walk.
07.01.2022 Three days to go until Flowers for Fuel. Hopefully all is in place but we are sure that if there is something not done or is missing we can work around it. The Met B has forecast cooler weather, around 26-27 degrees for Sunday, so it should be a lovely day to wander in the various gardens on display. Raffle tickets are selling well and to date with donations we have raised over $1,000.00 in cash towards our fuel facility. In addition to cash, in kind sponsorships amount to ...some $700.00. These sponsorships have meant that there are no expenses to be paid for raffle prizes or admin costs in running the event. Now we just need the promised mild spring day and lots of people. See you on Sunday, 10.00am at the Guardian Office, Main Street, Minyip
06.01.2022 We live in trying times, times not seen for 100 years when men returning home from the First World War brought the Spanish Flu with them. In total, worldwide, this epidemic killed more people than the war. Today we see returning citizens bringing a new virus to our shores forcing our governments to implement forced isolation for arrivals as some have previously ignored the requirements for social distancing. The Society cancelled our normal monthly meeting for March, howe...ver, because of the short time frame of fifteen minutes, went ahead with the AGM. There is no telling when the Society will resume its normal meetings. The executive remains the same for the 2020-2021 year: Diane is President, Shirley is Secretary, Russ is Treasurer, with Wayne and Joan filling the other executive roles. To re-cap on our year, members attended the annual conference of the Western District Historical Societies in Swan Hill, note that the 2020 conference has been cancelled. The Society ran a very successful Open Garden Day to raise funds for the Minyip Fuel Project and handed over in excess of $4,000 to Minyip Progress Assn. Minyip and Rupanyup Primary Schools participated in our annual History project with many entries from both schools. Rupanyup will hold the perpetual trophy for the year. At our monthly meetings we have toured our local ghost towns, travelled to the far north of Western Australia to Truscott Air Base, feasted on Indonesian food, revisited tragic deaths in our annual cemetery walk and been regaled by a play reading. The Society in Minyip is a small group of dedicated people maintaining, preserving and researching our history. More members and volunteers will always be welcome.
02.01.2022 Last week Minyip hosted 4 members of the Royal Flying Doctor Service German Fan Club. This fan club has been operating for over 23 years and still raising considerable amounts of money for the RFDS. After their stay in Minyip they were going to Broken Hill. The photo shows the girls looking through our considerable collection of memorabilia regarding the m@king of the TV series

01.01.2022 Our last meeting for 2019 was held last night with festivities the key for the evening. Susan and Daniel Korrel provided the entertainment in the form of a Play Reading that evoked much amusement from their audience. The couple then spoke about their time with Covenant Players, an itinerant Christian theatre group and the ups and downs of life in a rep company spending four + months on the road twice a year. Member Wayne Jackson updated the Society on the outcome of the h...istorical project we ran for the first time this year with Minyip and Rupanyup primary students participating. Thanks to Wayne for organising the project and to Mayor Graham Massey and artist and teacher Rose Groves for assisting in the judging of the entries. More on this project after the presentations on Friday. A huge thank you to Leigh Hammerton of Murtoa for the donation of the box of memorabilia presented to the Society at the meeting. Also received this week a treasure trove of love letters from the 1920s from Alice to Fritz. What an amazing find and of course Shirley and Diane had to make sure that they did eventually marry as it would have been terrible if they had not done so.
01.01.2022 Next meeting will be on Tuesday evening at 6 pm. Due to another commitment Susan Korell will not be our guest speaker. Wayne Jackson will speak to us about Ghost Towns, areas around Minyip that were gazetted as towns but never eventuated. Members are asked to please bring food to share.
01.01.2022 Today Wayne's list of children's names was collated and these are published here as family names. Do you have a connection??
