22.01.2022 Chantal and Anne enjoyed a spectacular weather day out at the reef for a full day snorkel adventure...They were all the way from Luxembourg so snorkelling was a little out of their comfort zone, but they both rose to the challenge under the guidance of Dr Adele Pile our resident marine biologist!!! It just so happens that Adele and her partner Stuart, who is an Oceanographer, are going to be taking over our business in a few short days' time and it was their first charter tog...ether doing what they will no doubt excel in!!!! Happy faces all around!!! Well done to Chantal and Anne who had only landed in Australia less than 24 hours previously...... Just being awake and functional would have been an effort for me if I had been in their shoes - let alone snorkelling all day long!!!!LOL.. I hope the remainder of your very short trip in our beautiful country goes well ladies! Hopefully we will see you again someday? See more
19.01.2022 Breaking news... we've updated all our snorkelling equipment to frameless masks and adjustable fins. ~ ~ Properly fitting equipment allows you to relax and take in The Reef. It's impossible to enjoy your self if you're constantly adjusting your leaking mask, have a snorkel that doesn't fit comfortably in your mouth because it's too big or fins that slip and chafe. ~... ~ That's why we upgraded to @cressi1946 masks and fins #notsponseredbutshouldbe ~ ~ The frameless mask seals effortlessly to any face shape. The absence of a rigid frame means there's no pressure on your brow. So no more mask shaped marks on your face or headaches at the end of the day ~ ~ Frameless masks have a wider field of view and are less claustrophobic than traditional masks ~ ~ The adjustable fins accommodate narrow and wide feet. The snug fit on the foot means less effort and knee strain ~ ~ The snorkels have small mouth pieces for a comfortable in mouth feel ~ ~ I just love the colours. We got one of each so everyone has their own colour and there's no confusion on the boat ~ ~ Now that the cyclone has passed we're ready to get out on the water this week. ~ ~ All you need to bring is your sense of adventure! 19.01.2022 That's what I'm talking about, quality family time. What a great day the Elgendy Family had. Up from NSW for the school holidays this is their first time to Far North Queensland. They packed the activities in on their four hour tour of the Family Islands before heading to the airport. A bit of catch and release fishing, first time ever snorkelling and a picnic lunch on a sandy beach. A great way to connect with each other and nature. My favourite quote of the day was from ...Dad and the first thing he said when we were back in the boat from snorkelling..."I'm buying everyone snorkelling stuff when we get back to Wollongong." Will they be back to Mission Beach.....cheeky smile pretty much says it all. All they packed was their sense of adventure. Safe travels guys!
19.01.2022 Part of the research component in the Marine Monitoring Program run by JCU is the periodic deployment of 'Passive Samplers' at various sites through the GBR. We look after 2 such sites situated at High Island and Dunk Island. We had pulled the moorings at each site for annual maintenance and it was now time to redeploy them and attach the samplers ready for the wet season which is fast approaching... It would be a fairly back breaking process, however, Jase has it undercontrol with the use of a handy winch to save the day...Mission accomplished!
19.01.2022 A stunning day for a lovely family to have a bit of a snorkel around the Family Islands. Barbara and her family are visiting from Germany and Poland. They've been road tripping up from Sydney to Cairns and popped into Mission Beach for one night. We took them on a three hour hop around Dunk and Bederra and got in some snorkelling on the fringing reefs before they high tailed it to Cairns this avo.... What did they think you say? Well Barbara said "it was much better than Airlie Beach. The water was clear and we saw so much more colourful coral." Her brother Luce couldn't get over the sounds of the parrot fish chewing on the reef and the rice crispy popping sounds of the snapping shrimp. Describing it to his mum as "pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop". Everyone got caught up in his enthusiasm and had a big laugh. Come on out with Dr Adele and let her show you things you didn't even know were there. There's lots to see here in the near shore. Especially in our secret spots in this gorgeous weather.
17.01.2022 We'll forgive you for thinking this is the Great Barrier Reef. It IS absolutely stunning. It's actually a fringing reef only 20 minutes from Mission Beach and one of our secret snorkelling spots #localknowledge Looking for an adventure to while away a morning? Our snorkelling safaris around the Family or Barnard Islands start at 9 and are back at noon so you can enjoy lunch at one of Mission Beach's fine beach side cafes.... All you need to pack is your sense of adventure. Give us a call to create yours.
17.01.2022 I know you're tired but come, this is the way. Rumi ~ ~ It's been a year of lock downs, working/schooling from home and far too much time on devices to connect to each other. ~... ~ You deserve a holiday. ~ ~ Our private, luxury camping on the Great Barrier Reef is one of the 88 approved experiences for your $200 #CairnsHolidayVoucherDeal ~ ~ Everyone else can take advantage of half price airfares from the capital cities to Cairns. ~ ~ We'll look after the rest. ~ ~ All you need to bring is your sense of adventure. ~ ~ Credit where credit is due @phlipvids See more
16.01.2022 Good evening everyone, Adele here. Just a quick note to say that Telstra have disconnected the business land line while trying to transfer the phone from Bec and Jase to us Unfortunately when you ring the old number, 4068 7009, it now tells you the number is disconnected. Which might make people think we are not in business any more. Which is far from the truth. We are available by phone at 0475 885 205... Oh and Telstra is straight onto it, it should be fixed in 17-30 days. And how's this for irony, Stuart used to be employed by Telstra.
15.01.2022 THAR SHE BLOWS. Yes, the whales have arrived in Mission Beach. While bringing our gorgeous guest Vanessa back from a relaxing afternoon at Dunk Island we spotted this beauty. The first whale of season. We spent about 40 minutes hanging out this this young man. Based on the size and the fact that it was alone I reckon it's a juvenile male not long off his mum. Head over to our Instagram @greatbarrierreefsafaris to see the live feed of this encounter.... Remember it's the law to keep 100 m from all marine mammals. Vanessa took the path less traveled and had an adventure. She had her first encounter with a whale. Be like Vanessa. Let's go exploring. All you need to pack is your sense of adventure.
13.01.2022 The impacts of COVID-19 have resulted in unprecedented changes in how we all work. As a microbusiness we will continue to provide charter services for essential activities; weather, health and safety permitting. So whether you're a tradie needing to get out to the Family Islands to perform essential services, a caretaker or owner in need of supplies or a scientist needing that data point, we are here to help. There are a few common sense changes in our operations that we wis...h to make you aware of: We will be practicing social distancing on the boat which means we will be restricted to 4 persons on board the vessel at any time. We will be wearing disposable gloves to handle all your gear and provide you with some so that you will not contaminate the boat with your hands. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. All interior surfaces of the boat are cleaned between clients with disinfectant. This increases our turn around times so your patience with scheduling is greatly appreciated.
12.01.2022 Dr Adele here with some #wednesdaywisdom so that you can #learnsomethingnew ~ ~ All that is white is not bleached. Some corals are naturally white. Like this foliose, means looking like leaves, corals. They are commonly referred to as lettuce corals because they resemble a head of lettuce. ~... ~ Corals can be white at their fast growing edges. If you look closely at the coral you will see that the edges are whiter than the central bits of the leaves. This is because the coral skeleton is made up of calcium carbonate which is white. The coral polyp has yet to occupy the skeleton and change the colour with it’s pigment. ~ ~ Massive white corals stand out on the reef not only because they are so different but the white background brings out the colours of the reef fish. Making for an eye popping explosion of colour. ~ ~ And while you are here, volume up so you can hear the snapping of the shrimps and popping of the fish. That’s the music of a health reef. ~ ~ All you need to bring is your sense of adventure! ~ ~ Video taken 29 December 2020 by Dr Adele #greatbarrierreeftoday See more

08.01.2022 "My eyes adored ya Like a million miles away from me You couldn't see how I adored ya So close, so close and yet so far"... OK kids, ask your parents who sang this little ditty. First comment with the correct answer gets bragging rights. Sure we all feel that way about Dunk Island sometimes. But don't fret, we can get you there and keep you dry the whole time. No water entries, just step aboard from pontoon at the Clump Point Boat Ramp and exit at the jetty on Dunk Island. To make your day on the island more fun we are offering a School Holiday Special, complementary snorkel gear and homemade baked good with every full fare return transfer to Dunk Island. Who could ask for anything more? The fine print: Quantities limited, first in best dressed, can not be combined with any other discount or offer. Offer valid 28 June 2020 to 12 July 2020. Can not be redeemed for a discount on transfer. We reserve the right to cancel transfers owing to hazardous weather or mechanical failure and make a full refund. Book now to secure yours.
08.01.2022 Sunday morning you don't ever want to receive that phone call saying there's a sick child off shore with a plea for you to come and help. But that's exactly what happened this morning. And we breathed a heavy sigh because we weren't sure we would be able to get the boat in the water. You see, random parking of vehicles at the boat ramp, like those pictured below, blocks the all ready limited turning circle and access to the ramp. As the only charter boat still supplying ess...ential services to those on the water and islands we use the boat ramp most days. We are acutely aware that parking has been a challenge as there has been no clear signage. We applaud the Cassowary Coast Coast Council, Department of Transportation and Main Roads, Queensland Maritime Safety and Jetty Specialist for putting up appropriate signage and policing the boat ramp this weekend. But more importantly you, the users of the boat ramp, for following the signage. Because of these reasonable, common sense changes we were able to under take an emergency transfer for medical reasons. I know one family and a little girl who's feeling better just being able to go see a doctor now.
08.01.2022 Leaping into the school holidays like..... Here's a short clip from yesterday's interaction with the juvenile humpback. I'm sure there will be many more to come as the migration is only just starting to get to Mission Beach. Seriously, who doesn't want to holiday here?

07.01.2022 We can’t jump off bridges anymore because our iPhones will get ruined. We can’t take skinny dips in the ocean because there’s no service on the beach and adventures aren’t real unless they’re on Instagram. Technology has doomed the spontaneity of adventure and we’re helping destroy it every time we Google, check-in, and hashtag. Jeremy Glass ~ ~ One of the challenges is unplugging. Putting down your phone and imprinting those memories. Not Gramming it as it happened.... ~ ~ We always have our underwater camera ready. Taking those happy snaps and sharing them with you are the end of your adventure. ~ ~ We’re not the greatest of photographers but you will get some priceless candid moments you can look back on and smile as you say Remember that day when. ~ ~ We also work extra hard to get some photos of mum because she’s usually the one taking them ~ ~ All you need to bring is your sense of adventure! 05.01.2022 Kay and Strop joined Jason and skipper-in-training Stuart out to the reef for some action packed fishing. Once again Kay proved to be the Angler of the Day pulling in a variety of fish to her delight, as you can see from the photos. The holiday makers returned to the island with some great dinner options to be accompanied by a few choice beverages!!! Well done Kay! Great to have you both onboard once again....a little sad though as it was Jason's last fishing charter as owner of our business......boo hoo... Regardless, Captain Stu will be continuing the legacy into the future!!!!

03.01.2022 The fringing reefs of the nearby islands offer some great snorkelling. It's always best to snorkel during low tide and with the full moon on Sunday the tides are nice and low in the afternoon. Low tide on Saturday is at 2:22 pm and on Sunday at 3:01. Our three hour tours of the Family Islands include 1 hour of marine biologist guided snorkelling to make sure you don't overlook some hidden creature. Let us show you what lies beneath these calm blue seas on your next adventure. All you need to bring is a towel.

02.01.2022 Feeling a bit clammy this winter......#sorrynotsorry Dr Adele here with a #WildlifeWednesday post #learnsomethingnew Giant clams are found only in the Indo-West Pacific. There are two species that we regularly see when snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, the smaller, OK that's a relative thing, Tridacna maxima which bores into the reef and the massive, growing to over 1 m, Tridacna gigas which is free living. I guess they used maxima too early and then saw a ...bigger one and had to go with giant (gigas). Giant clams are listed as critically endangered as they have been hunted for their decorative shells and meat. They get their beautiful colouring from symbiotic algae that live in their tissue. Like corals, they can provide up to 100% of the energy requirements of the animals. The clams also consume plankton to get protein and other micronutrients. Fun fact: Giant clams are born without their symbiotic algae. They get their symbionts by eating giant clam poop which contains healthy live symbionts from adult clams. Personally I love seeing the clams on the reef as the colours are a spectacular swirl of joy.
01.01.2022 It is with mixed emotions that Jason and I sell our business Mission Beach Charters. We started this business from scratch with a shoestring budget and not a lot else except determination and tenacity to make it work. The journey for us has been a wild rollercoaster of ups and downs but extremely rewarding for both of us and we can stand back and be proud of what we achieved over 11.5 years considering that not a lot of businesses in Mission Beach survive for that long nor ca...Continue reading
01.01.2022 Finally it was flat enough to get out and get wet. The lovely Claire and Michael are up for a mini-break from Townsville to be backyard tourists. Hailing from Sydney, they've been sheltering in place in Townsville and are heading soon back to the big smoke. We shared some very special time on the water with the local pod of dolphins teaching some young ones how to bubble net. A few tail slaps told us to keep our distance so Stuart cut the engines. They did not disappoint a...s they got back to the business at hand. They even did some spyhopping just to make sure we kept our distance. The great thing about getting out when it's a bit cloudy is that the reef comes alive. No hiding is necessary, we even spotted some corals out feeding. Now, if we could only arrange for a cassowary to pop by and visit them at breakfast. Be like Claire and Michael, pack your sense of adventure and let's go see what's out there. We have snacks.
01.01.2022 Bring it on COVID. We see your border closure to Sydney and we raise you with a free hour of fun on all Family Adventures. This means there's time for some catch release fishing AND snorkelling. Not in the same location obviously. Everything is included. Even reef safe sunscreen. Water, juice and morning tea provided. All you need to bring is a hat, towel and your sense of adventure. You are welcome to picnic on a private beach. BYO or we can provide, POA.... We'll be running this special until 26 January. Subject to weather and availability. First in, best dressed.
