23.01.2022 After repeated job rejections for not being a "good fit," Collette Divitto, a 26-year-old woman with Down syndrome, decided to strike out on her own and start h...er own cookie company! Collette perfected her craft in her familys kitchen for over ten years but, when she tried to make her love of baking into a career and applied for jobs at local bakeries, she was turned down countless times year after year. Finally, Collette, who said "it was really hurtful and I felt rejected a lot," had enough -- she started her own cookie company, Colletteys Cookies, and this holiday season it took off in a big way. After a story by CBS Boston went viral online, orders for her signature cinnamon-dipped chocolate chip cookie began to pour in from around the country and, by mid-December, she had over 10,000 orders for more than 120,000 cookies! The surge of support has allowed the young entrepreneur to move from a home-based business into an industrial kitchen, and shes now making plans to expand and hire more people with disabilities. Thats my dream, Collette says. I want to help more people with disabilities. It would be a great feeling to hire them. Collettes struggle to find work prior to starting her business is a common one for people with disabilities; according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 10.7% of people with disabilities who are actively looking for work were unemployed in 2015, twice the rate of people without disabilities. To Collette, this reality "is very upsetting... Its very hard to find a paying for people like me who have special needs." For this reason, shes excited to turn her company into a model for employing people with disabilities; asserting "its about getting jobs for everyone who deserves jobs." In a short time, Collette has gone from baking 100 cookies a week for a local grocery, the Golden Goose Market, to filling thousands of orders. She is getting temporary help from volunteers, including her mother, her sister, and friends from Golden Goose, but the change in income means she can take the next big step for her company: hiring people to bake for her. Shes also started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money towards her own production and distribution facility to she can bring on more staff permanently. And, most of all, Collette hopes that her example will inspire other people with disabilities to pursue their own dreams: Never give up. Dont let people make you sad or feel rejected. Stay motivated and follow your dreams. To learn more or order cookies, you can visit Colletteys Cookies website at http://www.colletteys.com/ -- or to help support her GoFundMe campaign for a permanent facility, visit http://bit.ly/2hRJtQI For books to help children and teens understand that diversity comes in many forms, including ableness, check out our blog post Many Ways To Be Mighty: 20 Books Starring Mighty Girls with Disabilities at http://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=12992 For two fantastic childrens books about kids with Down syndrome, both for ages 4 to 7, we recommend "My Friend Isabelle" (http://www.amightygirl.com/my-friend-isabelle) and "Well Paint the Octopus Red" (http://www.amightygirl.com/we-ll-paint-the-octopus-red) For adult readers, there is also a touching memoir by the father of a daughter with Down syndrome, An Uncomplicated Life: A Fathers Memoir of His Exceptional Daughter at http://www.amightygirl.com/uncomplicated-life And, for books to encourage Mighty Girl of all ages to go after their dreams this year, regardless of the obstacles they encounter along the way, check out our blog post, "Big Dreams for a New Year: 25 Books to Inspire Your Mighty Girl in 2017," at http://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=10834

21.01.2022 Ive been pondering how I can help in the current Covid-19 situation that we have found ourselves in. Im concerned about the economic impact to our country, but most of all to the businesses in our community. The impacts will be potentially massive, and long-lasting.

20.01.2022 Hi Guys, Just a quick refresh of the pinned post. The purpose of this page is to promote all the amazing local businesses and support each other in the associated challenges. A few housekeeping bits that should be easy to keep in mind: 1. Please name your business ONCE ONLY and tell us a little about what you are hoping to get from this group. 2. Positive, constructive feedback is welcome. Please be willing to suggest helpful things and open to hearing what people have to sa...y. Objective feedback is invaluable. 3. No nasties. If you have an issue with a particular business, please take it up with them in the first instance. If someone is not keeping to the spirit of this page, please let admin know. We reserve the right to remove and block people if required. 4. We are not here to compete. We want a more-the-merrier approach, so if we end up with multiple businesses with very similar products and services, that can be a real positive. It provides an opportunity to learn and problem-solve together. Customers love choice, so healthy, respectful competition is fantastic for everyone. 5. We aim to include all of Mitchell Shire. If an area feels a bit left out, please speak up and well make sure to shine the spotlight your way. We will include some opportunities for businesses from outside the Shire to participate, as long as their intention is to help our community foster and grow. This page is now managed by Anita Gisch. Events will have a small administration fee to the cost of advertising and administration. Thanks, Anita Gisch

16.01.2022 "Others told me that I shouldnt have a career, that I shouldnt raise my voice, that women are supposed to have a master" Heres the story of a woman on a mission, empowering other women as she goes.

15.01.2022 Helping a buddy out

15.01.2022 Hope everyone is staying safe and sane. Just a quick FYI, I recently had to remove a member. She wanted to start some drama and that is not welcome here. We are not excluding resellers of products but do want to put more emphasis on local innovation and skill building. There are plenty of groups to promote products, we want to support each other in business skills and confidence. Thanks

07.01.2022 A pioneer hiker, Emma Gatewood, was the first woman to walk the Appalachian Trail solo in one season. At the age of 67, after raising 11 children, Gatewood star...ted hiking, inspired by an article in National Geographic, and set her mind to tackle the 2,168-mile trail. She completed the hike three times, the last at age 75, making her the first person to do so. She also walked 2,000 miles of the Oregon Trail, averaging 22 miles a day. In total she walked alone through 14 states. The impetus behind her marathon hikes is rooted in her experience as a survivor of domestic violence. The last straw was an incident when her husband Percy beat her so badly he broke her teeth, jaw and cracked her ribs, nearly killing her. A sheriffs deputy arrived at the house, and arrested Emma, not Percy. She spent a night in jail until the mayor of the small West Virginia town where they lived intervened when he saw her blackened eyes and bloodied face. He granted Emma a divorce unheard of in those days and she raised her last three children alone. Her youngest daughter Lucy who witnessed the brutal violence showed her mom the National Geographic article and urged her mom to set out on an adventure. Hiking for Emma, was an act of self-care, healing, resistance, independence and a way to regain her inner and outer strength and find her way back to herself. When asked why she hiked, she said simply because I wanted to. #history #domesticviolence #enddomesticviolence #hiking #hikingadventures #inspiration #selfcare #selflove #instagood See more

03.01.2022 Hey all! Now that we are in lockdown again, just re-posting the link to a website I put together when this pandemic started to help you find local businesses w...ho are providing pick-up / take-away, delivery or services which can be provided whilst social distancing. Consider buying local where you can! By supporting local businesses you help keep them going in this difficult time, and hopefully this helps ensure they are here for us after this pandemic is finally over. I have personally discovered some awesome local businesses whilst putting this together. Often I can get what I need, delivered straight to my door so I dont have to venture out of my house at all! So have a browse, and see what gems you find! If you know of any businesses which arent listed, or if any details need to be updated please let me know (Im a one-woman band just trying to help out at this trying time!)... Stay safe and look after each other
