14.01.2022 During this time of uncertainty, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of WA has been inundated with enquires and wishes to remind all prospective puppy buyers th...at a dog is for life, not a day. Whilst it may be convenient to introduce a new family member please remember that once you and your family return to normal routine it will be a difficult time for a puppy who is used to having constant attention to be left on their own. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of WA are concerned about the number of dogs which may end up in rescues or pounds, after this pandemic. If you have purchased a puppy and you are no longer able to care for it, please contact the breeder in the first instance. Many reputable breeders have paused breeding plans during this time. We ask that you take the time to research the breed only buy health tested puppies from ANKC Registered breeders. Now is the time to learn more about the breed, do your research on registered breeders, find out where you can do training with your future puppy etc. There are a number of Perth Staffordshire Bull Terrier Facebook Pages where you can ask questions, but you are also encouraged and welcome to ask our club for support and advice. We ask you to please be mindful of the following; - Please ask the breeder for proof of health testing, clear of HC & L2-HGA from both parents. - Be patient when seeking a puppy and do your research to find the right breeder. - Do NOT buy from back yard breeders (byb). - If you have any concerns regarding a breeders registration, please contact Dogs West to verify their membership: https://www.dogswest.com/dogswest/Home.htm - If you are requested to pay a deposit, do not pay this until the pups are well over 2 weeks of age and you can confirm this breeder is a registered breeder with the ANKC. 02.01.2022 Did you know that there isn't actually a breed called an English Staffy? The name of the breed is Staffordshire bull te...rrier (SBT). ? The breed originated in the city of Birmingham and in the Black Country of Staffordshire (England) from cross-breeding between the Bulldog and the English white terrier. As time went on, the breed was developed into taller dogs with larger builds than their English counterparts and these were called an American Staffordshire Terrier (Amstaff). The smaller English breed was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1936 as the Staffordshire terrier. The name was changed in 1972 to differentiate between the shorter, smaller English version (today's Staffordshire bull terrier) and the American version. - and they and their crossbreeds can be found in large numbers in pounds. There are countless backyard breeders of these dogs, many of them trying to cash in on more desired colours such as Blues - whatever you do, do not pay more for a blue and make sure the parents are not affected by skin allergies which seem to be rising in this breed. .
