25.01.2022 Teaching the next generation. My apprentice Mr 6 :). He did this without being asked.. Sure he got the mic back to front at first, but fixed it when informed. The attitude of a sound guy. Do what needs to be done without being asked.

23.01.2022 I love it when a plan comes together.. I've been doing some prep work for a wedding ... in March... Nothing like starting early and being prepared well ahead of time. I need to transmit video and audio to China for the brides family and possibly have return audio and video too. Skype is the easy and obvious choice, but Skype only supports web cams. But most webcams are designed for short focal length. I need about 20m from front to back of room. I have used other softwa...re previously, but I was not happy with the video quality of the software. I also want to use a better quality camera with superior optics. The next obvious choice is a camcorder with a line out and a video capture card in the pc..... But Skype doesn't work with capture cards.. Cue the search for intermediate software that will get the video from the capture card and pass it on to Skype.. First and second software tested, could pass video to skype, but couldn't get video from the capture card.. FAIL!! Third software trialed for the win!!! XSplit Broadcaster could get video from my capture card and pass to Skype. XSplit can actually stream live to youtube and a bunch of other streaming services. I let Skype manage the audio directly in my test computer.. Now to install the capture card, drivers, and XSplit on the computer being used during the service.
22.01.2022 Digital A/V SDI capture, output and genlocked to the switcher and cameras.. Woohoo!!!

21.01.2022 Preparations have begun for Saturday's tracking session. Just a little core and a loom to start with... The rack, monitors and mics cases will get sorted out tomorrow.
21.01.2022 Carols rehearsals have been running smoothly, but due to circumstances beyond her control one of the singers had to take some time out earlier than expected, before teaching her harmony part to another. So, how to learn the harmony... No problem, I pulled up a previous live recording mix session and turned down the drums buss, instrument buss and vocal buss, re-routed the harmony vocal part to the stereo buss so it wasn't any quieter and voila! A harmony training mix.
21.01.2022 Nearly every electronic keyboard has a Piano and Strings sound, but this is so much more authentic..
20.01.2022 I hate using a dirty console. It is so much nicer to work with a clean desk. So, I decided to completely dismantle a new (second hand) desk and wash the facia panels in the kitchen sink - removing the stubborn tape adhesive with Eucalyptus oil and put the knobs, switch caps and fader caps through an ultrasonic bath to make 'em sparkle... Beautiful!! I hope there won't be any screws left over or missing or cables only plugged in at one end... :)... Always take care of your tools! Next job: Buy some vinyl and make a cover for it - to keep it clean.
20.01.2022 It's starting to look a little bit like a musical. - and a lesson on how to record 37 channels on 32 tracks
18.01.2022 Hey, Wes! Look what you made me do!! ;) Actually thanks for the heads up about this desk.
17.01.2022 Things you don't want to hear - let alone say between show 1 and show 2 of a musical production... "It's ok, I 've got a soldering iron in the car and we've got time during lunch" But when things go wrong, you've got to be ready to fix them and quick, relying on all the skills in your arsenal. Thankfully someone else had a better idea and we used a different interface - no soldering required.. Happy days!!
17.01.2022 This audio gig is an interesting one... I have just mixed a wedding service: 4 piece band mix, easy Backing tracks for processional, signing of the register and recessional, easy... Hand held radio mic for speaking parts, easy Video and audio link to Oklahoma for the parents of the groom to see and hear, easy Video and audio link from Oklahoma to here so parents of groom can "give consent", easy Pan, tilt and zoom the camera, easy Projecting words for congregational songs, easy Recording audio and video on DVD, easy Recording audio only on pc as a backup, easy Monitoring multiple audio record/feed levels, easy Operating lighting console, easy. Juggling that many easy tasks.... Yeah, I'll have an assistant!! Thanks, Todd.
15.01.2022 Some helpful thoughts for your Thursday morning. I promise it does talk about you and your sound despite starting off talking about tennis.... :-)
14.01.2022 So, combining my last major project with my most recent minor project results in a full av control system that looks like:
13.01.2022 An example of what can be done with what you've got right now, and encouragement to improve you, not your tools. Thanks for sharing Paul.
12.01.2022 well, this is a first... running a full PA control system for a live streaming event with no amplified speakers.
12.01.2022 So, after planning, purchasing of patch bays and cabling, racking the desk power supply and Tascam X48 multitrack hdd recorder, it is now a complete, functional system all plugged in and working.
11.01.2022 sharing so I can find it again later...
11.01.2022 It's starting to look a bit like a television studio.
09.01.2022 All plugged in and working.
08.01.2022 Working on mixing a great track. Excellent fun. Plenty of dynamic range, and headroom for mastering.
08.01.2022 Do you want to get the same sound as any of your favourite top 40 artists? Here's how: In the November 2014 issue of Sound on Sound, they interviewed Tony Platt about engineering the AC/DC album Back in Black. He was talking about the guitar tone he got for lead guitarist Angus Young, and he said: ... There have been so many times when people have asked me to get them a sound like Angus, and Ive generally said, Well need a Marshall head, well need a Marshall 4x12, well need a Gibson SG and well need Angus. Without that we just wont have the right combination. Sure good gear is one part, but the other, possibly more critical part is the player... YOU!! How about you make you as good as you can to get the best sound that you can.
08.01.2022 Wes, Challenge Accepted!! During initial oscillator testing, I thought that some of the caps had leaked, until I remembered that I had inserted a couple of compressors in the offending groups which were reducing the levels. For those playing at home, this is a 1980's 24 channel Yamaha PM1800. It doesn't seem right to pair it with Behringer outboard gear, but it was all that I had available that wasn't already racked up and in use.
06.01.2022 There's a lovely message in green. I've been try to genlock some cameras to a video switcher, and after much reading... Twiddling one little switcher setting, it all synced up nicely.
06.01.2022 Topping and tailing the tracks of a live recording in preparation for the mix. Editing fun!! 39 Minutes in... only 2 hours 41 Mins of recording to go.
05.01.2022 The current configuration of the video rack I built.. comments on each photo for clarity.
04.01.2022 Well, I now know more about theTascam X48 - 48 track hard disk recorder, than i ever thought i would.. After having bought one at auction this week and finding it non-functional on power up, I have debugged it and got it 100% operational. So glad i know a bunch about computer BIOS, Operating Systems, hardware and flopping pesky motherboard batteries... When they go flat they can cause all sorts of configuration failures. So, i can now record up to 72 tracks in a single take...lots of live recording goodness.
03.01.2022 Well, that was fun... I just hooked up my usual recording system to the hybrid system in the previous post - adding in a couple of MIDI leads and some BNC word clock. So that my Yamaha 01V is now sending MMC (MIDI Machine Control) to the X48. The X48 is sending MTC (MIDI TimeCode) and wordclock (digital audio synchronisation signal) to my usual recording PC. So, pressing record on the PC- it just sits there waiting for time code. Pressing play on the 01V tells the X48 to play... and start sending timecode out. The PC then syncs to time code and word clock and begins recording at the same position on it's timeline as the X48's timeline albeit with a little offset which is required. The multitrack audio is playing out of the X48, going into the analogue mixer input channels, being mixed, EQ and compressed and effected down to a stereo out to a digital mixer for ADC (analogue to digital conversion) into a computer soundcard with a mixer into software with a mixer, and then being monitored via the soundcard replay from the PC into a digital mixer into the 2 track return of the analogue mixer so I can switch between monitoring the X48 replay and the PC recording for edits as this will be a live mixdown - no automation, no digital control except the digits of my hands. And it all works flawlessly.. Fun fun fun!!! See more
03.01.2022 After 2 weeks of open heart surgery, brain surgery, and a visit to the dermatologist... IT LIVES!!!! A quick run through its paces. A couple of channels need looking at, but on the whole, not bad at all.
02.01.2022 An excellent example of what quality recording looks like... (Not my work). Recorded in a single take. Quality playing, micing and mixing.
02.01.2022 My last mixdown a couple of weeks ago, was well outside the box. Here's a photo of the complete setup. Tascam X48, Yamaha M3000, analogue compressors (2x dbx 166XL, Presonus ACP88, dbx 1046), Yamaha effects (Rev500, SPX990), Yamaha 01V, and my pc. The left hand video monitor is the X48 (tracking and replay), the right hand monitor is Sonar on my PC (stereo 2 track record). The Mackie monitors are hiding in the dark on top of the white pedestal stands in front of the mixer. The wave file image is the mastered result of one of the songs playing.
02.01.2022 Here's one way of doing mobile recording. My setup is a little more spacious..
01.01.2022 Heel and toe, heel and toe.. Grab yer partner by the hand, twirl her round and off ya go. Bush dance and live recording of Jerry Chaser Band. So much fun
01.01.2022 What an incredible way to turn a limitation into a great artform. Great work by these guys. http://mashable.com///03/the-academic-facebook-live-loop/
