07.10.2021 New rules for recreational fishing in Western Australia apply from today. These rules have been introduced to help protect our ocean resources and will be revie...wed in 12 months time to allow data to be gathered on current catch levels. Key changes include: Introduction of trip limits - possession limits on fishing trips is 10kg of finfish fillets from any species, no skin required, plus an additional 10kg of fillets from large pelagic species with skin on. Removal of the 30cm minimum fillet length for filleting at sea. Update to the definition of whole fish, which can now be cut in two pieces and still be considered as one fish. Release weights will be required for the master of all fishing boats fishing by line for demersal scalefish, both recreational and commercial, anywhere in WA, not just in the West Coast Region. The changes are a proactive management response in consultation with WA’s peak recfishing body, Recfishwest, to help manage the potential impact of increased fishing activity on demersal finfish. The past 12 months has seen a noticeable increase in recreational fishing licences issued, and vessel retrieval data from some boat ramps during the winter of 2020 was double that for the same period in previous years. This year is set to continue that trend, with tourist hotspots fully booked out, and record levels of offal being disposed of from some fish cleaning stations.
