This virus is serious and can be... fatal if you do not seek veterinary treatment. Many cats have already died in the past few weeks. The virus is thought to be virulent systemic feline calicivirus but that has not yet been confirmed by laboratory testing. At this stage it appears the outbreak is contained to the Ipswich area. This strain of the cat flu virus is impervious to vaccinations, and even with treatment it has a 40% mortality rate. The Booval Veterinary Hospital says owners should look out for: - Fever - Not Eating - Lethargic - Oral Ulcers - Limb or Head Swelling - Breathing Difficulty (Upper respiratory signs) - Lameness - Nasal sores - Skin Ulcers - Ear Tip Necrosis - Jaundice (Yellowing of Skin) Owners concerned for their pets safety or affected by this virus should keep their cats indoors, and contact their vet.
